Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Don’t buy any sort of steam cleaner or clothes steamer if you live in a very hard water area, the steam holes get so gunged up they stop working

Smart meter here.
So many neighbours have issues.

Keep holding off getting one. Our utility company eventually paid us to have one fitted.

An electric car. I constantly hear from friends how amazing they are, but even after all these years of seeing them everywhere I just cannot get my head around it.

if you’ve a charger at home and you can do multiple commutes for the mileage. Game changer.

if your using away from home chargers. Expensive, dog shit and a waste of time.

I live in a very hard water area and have got a water softener, the salt type not reverse osmosis. Its wonderful.

llamashoe · 14/01/2026 21:42

I can also confirm the Lumea works.

For me, I've been wanting to buy a robot vacuum that also mops the floors. Holding off but not sure for how much longer...

Laura Geller baked make up. Is it worth the money or is it all hype?

I personally love it.

I started to wear it about 3 years back, aged 59. My face isnt lined, but I have very high redness and scaly , flaky skin. No matter what liquid foundation I tried, it would slide off, not cover, clump, and worse of all I didnt like the feel

Baked balance and brighten does not cover blemishes or high pigment, that it does it gives an air brushed finished

However her double baked - full on coverage

Concealer is fantastic

I now wear the double baked ( applied with a kabuki brush ) just stippled over my redness, then use the balance and brighten over the top and everywhere else .. Im left with a face that is still mine but better, feels fantastic, and it lasts - all day

If you want to buy then join her site. Use a throwaway email , because you get bombarded with special offers, but hold on till you get a good offer. If you dont like it, wrong colour, then get in touch via their online chat and they are very good with refunds ( dont usually have to send back either ) Delivery is about 10 days. Or buy from QVC - which is expensive but easy to return

I had a steam cleaner - couldn't get on with it at all.

Had a clothes steamer - ditto.

I'm thinking about buying an air fryer. But kids are grown and mostly gone and I have 2 ovens so seems a bit unnecessary. Still everyone raves about them.

I have been using a kindle for years now - brilliant for going on holidays. In the past few years I only use the kindle app on my phone - love it.

If its just the one or two of you, makes sense to get an air fryer

It's a tiny oven . so you are only paying to heat a tiny space

My double oven - not been used for years. I did use the grill function last year, I was doing breakfast for 8 - made sense to have that going alongside the air fryer

We just got one - Ive not yet driven it because Im not comfortable in an automatic but DH loves it

Husbands fuel bill has gone from £40 a week diesel to £15 electric charge - we moved to E7 over night and Im saving around £20 a week on the electricity bill because Im up early and put the dishwasher/ washing machine and dishwasher on during the cheap rate. Also set the hot tub to heat at the cheap rate

aroundtheworld247 · 14/01/2026 22:05

Mine is a kindle but also air conditioning in the bedrooms, it is expensive but cannot decide if it is worth it

I live in a really hard water area so I only fill my steam cleaner and iron with the water my tumble dryer collects as that is effectively distilled water ;-)

Dont knock it :)

We dont have a bath, we dont go out very often, We both have physical jobs . We enjoy sitting in the tub with a drink, finding really obscure music on Alexa , relaxing and actually talking to each other

Everyone knows heating a tub is expensive, we have ours so insulated that even before we got the E7 it wasnt costing a fortune as once at temp it would only take 30 mins boost a day, But why pay more when you dont have to? :)

Not knocking it remotely! I think your perpetually warm skin cell soup sounds lovely. 😜

Don't anyone mention wee! 😟

Starhaf · 15/01/2026 00:09

Absolutely yes! It works awesomely well. Yo do need to follow a routine and use it regularly, but it definitely pays off . I highly recommend to. Start using it in winter as it it works best on non tanned skin and you’ll be hair free for summer

Starhaf · 15/01/2026 00:12

fuzzwuss · 14/01/2026 11:56

It does work on the bikini line, not tried underarm.

I can confirm it works fine in all areas including underarms. Not a single hair has regrown in my armpits in 8 years ! 😀

Sorry OP, can't help with the steam cleaner but mine would be a Kindle! I love reading and love holding a physical book but I'm almost certain I could read double the amount if I had a Kindle because it's much easier to get out to read for a bit, you don't even have to hold it if you don't want too! I also see physical books as a kind of trophy. But Kindles are quite pricey, and there's different versions now too. I've been debating this for about a year now.

You can download kindle for free on your phone ☺️

@Ladybird69 they come in many different sizes and I bought a small one from Amazon. I use for 20 minutes every other day on my face and scalp, have used it on an aching knee, sprained ankle and back pain. After a few sessions the areas do feel better but I guess they may have begun healing at the same rate anyway?

Have a look at Alex on YouTube his videos despite receiving some red light devices as gifts are pretty balanced

I’ve had two steam cleaners and think they’re poor. Philips make a vacuum/mop in one and I’ve looked at that a few times. Same with air fryer. Everyone says how great they are so I look again and think would I use this. Even the largest one isn’t very big for actual cooking space although it would look enormous on the work top.

@Insidelaurashed why not just get the kindle app on your phone? I have quite a big phone screen and read books on it instead of having a separate kindle

There are only two of us, we use our air fryer almost every day.

A funeral plan.

A solicitor told me, "You can't die without a funeral plan." So I'm not getting one.

I used to be a funeral arranger but I'm not any longer so there's absolutely no benefit to me in telling you this. If you want to have a full funeral with a service then the earlier you buy a plan, the more you'll save. Funerals are bloody expensive, but when you purchase a plan you usually get a bit of a discount on the funeral directors fees. The price you pay will be locked in, so if you bought your plan today, and die in (for example) 30yrs time, you'll still pay today's price. We had people that had bought plans 20-30yrs before who paid peanuts for their funerals. The only thing to be aware of is that they only lock in the funeral directors fees. Third party stuff like crematorium/cemetery services etc are separate and will increase with inflation. Just make sure any plan you consider is authorised and regulated by the FCA so that your money is protected if the firm goes bust.
