Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Tymo hair curler/waver
Philips Lumea as well!
Hand steamer as well!

My friend was raving about the Tymo hair wrap curler before Christmas. Said it was amazing on her hair, shoulder length bleach blonde, and was very quick to curl all her hair. Her dd was impressed with how well it worked on her hair too. I'd never heard of them and am quite tempted, even to just do the front of my hair which is flat whereas the rest has gone full on curly

I had a handheld steam cleaner - it was rubbish. Wouldn't bother with one of those again. I don't have a clothes steamer, so can't comment.

I love my paper white kindle, and use it every day. I read actual physical books, too.

My 'thing', well, two things really, is an air fryer, and also a soup maker. I've been thinking about whether to buy both of these things for ages!

@BatshitCrazyWoman haven’t read more of thread yet, but get a gadget that does both (ish)! I have the ninja 9-in-1, mainly use the air fryer, but also the slow cooker which I use for soups - have to thenuse a stick blender but that’s okay to me. It also works as a mini elec oven, the dehydrator is amazing for fruit and candying oranges for chocolate dipping at Xmas , plus a low heat function for making the most amazing yoghurt with full fat creamy jersey milk. If that, or my coffee machine broke tomorrow, I would immediately replace!

I really want to upgrade my sewing machine. I'm doing a lot more since I cut my working hours and I would love more stitches etc. My current machine works fine so I feel a bit guilty spending so much money.
Love my Kindle, the air fryer and slow cooker are used a lot in my house but I didn't get on with the steam floor cleaner - it soaked the floors

You can try out the Kindle interface by downloading the free Kindle for phone app.
Mine is Olaplex. I have dry brittle hair but a Superdrug protein treatment fried it 8 years ago si I’m scared to try it. The Aldi dupes have done nothing for my hair.

Olaplex doesn’t seem to do a lot (or anything?) for my hair. At least not at home treatments.

edit: yes, even Olaplex 3.

An electric car. I constantly hear from friends how amazing they are, but even after all these years of seeing them everywhere I just cannot get my head around it.

Shark or Dyson hairdryer. Are they really any better than my standard hairdryer? I have fine, brittle hair.
Not sure I can justify the cost.

Dyson hairdryers are expensive but I think they’re worth it if you have thick/ frizzy hair. My hair takes so much longer to dry if I’m away and have to use a normal dryer.

lovemelongtime · 14/01/2026 17:06

I’m tooling and frying about both a rice cooker and air fryer. We have neither but I can cook rice really well in the pan and have an oven so just not sure I’d get the use out of them. Would just like one though.

I can’t decide about an LED face mask. Never use my steamer. Robot vacuum is on every day. Use my kindle most days and I used to be anti-kindle but it’s just so much lighter and easier plus I like that I can turn the brightness right down but still see it so I can read it next to my baby without disturbing him. I tried olaplex once and it didn’t do much for my long fine hair.

Same. I keep looking at the Shark one. They’re so expensive and I’m just not sure if I’d use it, but I’m really tempted.

Sorry OP, can't help with the steam cleaner but mine would be a Kindle! I love reading and love holding a physical book but I'm almost certain I could read double the amount if I had a Kindle because it's much easier to get out to read for a bit, you don't even have to hold it if you don't want too! I also see physical books as a kind of trophy. But Kindles are quite pricey, and there's different versions now too. I've been debating this for about a year now.

I have a kindle and it’s great when going on holidays.
Otherwise nothing compares proper books.

Robot vacuum
Another set of headphones to join my ever growing collection
The courage to donate about half my clothes as I don’t use them

Use my robot vacuum every day! Clear the floor of any debris, set it on and go out to work. It's fab. It's very slow though, so I personally find it annoying when your in the house and just watching it go soooo slowly. But when you're out and come back to clean floors it's amazing.

I want to get a mop one next

GlomOfNit · 14/01/2026 17:13

New varifocals. My current ones are ... ok, and I did have the optician say they'd do for now ... but they're oldish now and I could really do with new ones. I went halfway house last year and just got new readers, which I never use because I was used to having varifocals on all the time, and of course you can't do that with reading glasses, you feel sick and fall over! A new pair at my opticians will cost me about £550 (and that's with cheapest frames) and I can't go there right now.

Pinkclarko · 14/01/2026 17:14

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

They’re great. Got mine from boots so I could get the advantage points. You need to have light skin and the hair has to at least not be blonde. Didn’t work on my underarms despite matching this description, but I haven’t waxed bikini in years. Years! I warn you it’s a long game though. About four months to see significant difference for me. Worth it.

Isthistoomuchoestrogen · 14/01/2026 17:16

@Thundertoast I just tried the Luxe lash lift set. My natural lashes are very short, sparse and blonde. Probably my crappy technique; the lift worked well, but my remaining lashes are even more sparse and fragile than they were before. I guess any kind of perming solution is going to do that to hair. Unless you’re really good at this sort of thing, I’d probably recommend going to a professional

Soonenough · 14/01/2026 17:22

Don't bother with Dyson hairdryer. It is just as noisy and I can't tell the difference from an ordinary one . Might be worth quick drying time but only if you have long or very thick hair and the difference is minimal anyway.

Pallisers · 14/01/2026 17:25

I had a steam cleaner - couldn't get on with it at all.

Had a clothes steamer - ditto.

I'm thinking about buying an air fryer. But kids are grown and mostly gone and I have 2 ovens so seems a bit unnecessary. Still everyone raves about them.

I have been using a kindle for years now - brilliant for going on holidays. In the past few years I only use the kindle app on my phone - love it.

Olaplex is 100% worth it. Mine was fried and never grew past my shoulders until I started using it about 2 years ago. Now it's down almost to my waist.
Wet hair and leave it on all evening, wash out the next day. I use a out 3 small bottles a year x

Keep an eye out for online deals - I got my new Kindle Fire for about £40 last year!

I have an old version Kindle, no backlight etc, but I absolutely love it! Really don’t like reading a physical book! Would like to upgrade my Kindle to a newer version but my old one still works fine and I’m so attached to it!!!

I have a regular kindle but rarely use it however I’ve always got a book on the go in the Kindle App 😊

A funeral plan.

A solicitor told me, "You can't die without a funeral plan." So I'm not getting one.

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

I bit the bullet and bought one a few years ago. I blitzed all the hairs on my legs then and now 3 years on a have about 10 rogue ones on each leg so I will get it out again when I can be bothered and zap them and then I’ll be hair free for another year or 2. I also used it on my toe hairs and they never came back.
i also use my kindle especially on holiday.

I love my Dyson hairdryer. Would never go back. Conversely, I have a Kindle, steam cleaner and Philips Lumea and never use any of them.

I have the Dyson and no, it’s not hugely different to a standard hairdryer!

exse24Londoner · 14/01/2026 17:48

I keep looking at Dyson wraps but they are soooooo expensive. I got a hairdryer a couple of years ago which is great for my think unruly hair but can't justify a wrap thing as well. I hear that BabyLiss burns your hair???

any other recommendations?
