Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Mine are more retrospective
AirPods - wouldn't look back I love them
GHD hair drier - love it. I swim almost daily and the gym ones were ruining my hair

I have both and use them constantly. I would like to upgrade the steamer to one that uses suction but even my little cheapy one is great, and the kindle is just so convenient for reading on the go or in bed with its screen light, and as comfortable for the eyes as reading a book. My original Paperwhite lasted 10 years before I upgraded last year, and only then because I'd damaged the screen.

My "thing" is a Ninja Creami. I love ice cream but struggle to get flavours I really like as I don't eat chocolate, and would like to be able to use ice cream as a way of eating more protein. But it does seem like a lot of precious space to dedicate to a single use appliance, we don't have much freezer space either for pre-freezing the bowls, and it seems a bit gimmicky.

Make ice cream with this recipe - no special equipment needed and you don't have to churn it while it's freezing www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/no-churn_ice_cream_72012

Robot vacuum - worth its weight in gold, it scoots up the pet hair daily

Shark hair dryer - for me it has been worth it . I have silver hair and heat ruins it. Being able to blow dry and style on cool/cold in seconds is a game changer

Lumea is also a worth while buy - if your hair and skin colouring is correct. doesnt work so well on hormonal hair growth - top lip is clear but the chin and neck hairs still keep coming

An e-bike
My health is a bit shit now so I never cycle any more and I miss it.
But would i use it? Would it go on fire? Would i look stupid on it? What if run out for battery? What if I'm actually just lazy?

Love my e-bike.

I live rural with massive hills in any direction and the e bike makes mincemeat of them

I love getting out on it, but you do feel a lot colder - I often need gloves on a summers day - because of the speed .

I have a shark cryo mask and love it. My skin feels plump, and its definitely looking clearer.

Dare I ask how old you are. I am in my 50s and trying to decide whether to just give up and accept my age or keep fighting for a bit longer!

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

Go for it - I bought a handheld Tria for my lip line several years back and its done the job!! I wish wish wish these had been about when I was younger.

GlosGirl82 · 14/01/2026 14:51

Re Philips Lumea - 100% worth it. I have light brown hair and it’s practically killed off my leg hair and bikini line. BUT I have used it double as much as they recommend- but def worked for me

Wildywondrous · 14/01/2026 14:52

A wig. I'm 50 and my hair has thinned a lot and is now quite dry. The last time I had it cut into a proper style and highlights it was over £150.
I've been following a few people on TikTok and the wigs look so much more realistic than they did years ago, I was set to buy one then last night read that they last between 6 months and a year and now am not sure.
If anyone has experience or advice that would be great, I've been looking at monofilament wigs from jb extensions.

Dyson hairdryer/airwrap - I have one and it's ok, I can't see any difference between it and my cheap Boots hairdryer though and the curls from the airwrap fall out within an hour. I like the fact it doesn't get super hot but it's not something I'll replace when it breaks.

Sorry OP, can't help with the steam cleaner but mine would be a Kindle! I love reading and love holding a physical book but I'm almost certain I could read double the amount if I had a Kindle because it's much easier to get out to read for a bit, you don't even have to hold it if you don't want too! I also see physical books as a kind of trophy. But Kindles are quite pricey, and there's different versions now too. I've been debating this for about a year now.

I um'd and ah'd about buying a kindle. But I bought one and have never looked back! It fits in my handbag so I can take it everywhere. It's backlit so I don't even need good lighting to read it. It DOES take some getting used to and pictures aren't good, but for reading fiction I wouldn't go back. I also like that I can vary the font size to whatever is comfortable.

deepdas · 14/01/2026 14:53

I had a karcher steam cleaner. Very, good for dirty grout lines and ingrained dirt on stone floor. Also occaisional window cleans (very messy) but I didn't find it useful for much else...

I am holding off on an invisiline treatment for my mildly wonky teeth and varicose vein treatment.....

Jaxhog · 14/01/2026 14:56

My dilemma is a wig. My hair is v. thin on top - so bad that I avoid sitting under lights in case I shine and I wear a hat/cap whenever I can too. I don't know where to start looking seriously; buying online seems so risky for fit, style appearance etc.

CoolShoeshine · 14/01/2026 15:03

I love:, love, love my robot vac (eufy) you do have to be diligent in keeping clutter off the floor and electric cables tidy but it whizzes around, goes under furniture, mops and even cuts hair from the brush by itself.
Electric car another of my favourite things, but you do need a home charger. Love not having to go to the petrol station anymore!
Not impressed with floor steam mop, heated airer (bulky, difficult to move around and takes forever to dry clothes). Soup maker ok but no better than cooking and blending.
Currently considering an air fryer but dont quite see the point and also a robot mower.

LondonPapa · 14/01/2026 15:07

@Insidelaurashed I have a couple of steamers for household cleaning, freshening fabric furniture and clothes. All of them are used constantly. Highly recommended IMO.

Musicmummy63 · 14/01/2026 13:20

I don't have a slow cooker or airfryer, can't decide if I would just be duplicating the oven. Any info welcome.

I cant remember the last time I used my oven.

An air fryer is just a tiny oven - which makes it cheaper to use than the oven. Get the right size one and you will have a whole roast chicken in 60 mins or under - from cold - no need to preheat

Slow cooker, I rarely use

What I do use most days is the Ninja 15 in !

Between that, the dedicated air fryer and microwave I cook everything

SabbatWheel · 14/01/2026 13:50

I have a vibrating cleaning thing. Don’t bother, it’s crap.

Thanks i thought as much tbh !

Coffeeishot · 14/01/2026 15:12

waitingforthehallmarkedman · 14/01/2026 13:43

I returned mine. Absolute crap. You end up moving dirt around as it's difficult to rinse.

Thanks as ive just said I thought as much.

Smart meter here.
So many neighbours have issues.

@ChubbyPuffling

please could you say more? I’m on the fence too….

Applesonthelawn · 14/01/2026 15:17

I regretted my Dyson hairdryer. Gave it away to my son when he went to uni. He still uses it but his hair is short and doesn't need styling.

WrylyAmused · 14/01/2026 13:11

Asked the dentist about the water flosser - he said it wasn't useful/effective, and to use interdental brushes or floss instead.

My dentist said the same thing

No, doesn’t hurt

You can download the Kindle app on your phone. I have a physical Kindle & the app. You can set your devices to synch so it catches up to the latest read page whichever device you open up. You could see how you get on with the app before deciding whether to buy a physical Kindle.

Robot vacuum cleaner but my dog would attack it! I know he wants his lights punching out but apparently it’s not allowed 😂👊👊

Are you sure he'd attack? My dog and other visiting dogs have never shown any interest in the robot. It just doesn't register with them.

Entangledlife · 14/01/2026 15:28

@TheFlis not the pp that asked about robot vacuum but I really want one too, my living room has a step up along the centre(used to be two rooms) can the vacuum deal with this if I put a ramp up? the step's about 3 inches high

LonelyMom123 · 14/01/2026 15:28

Love our robo vac/mop
Holding off on a tymo waver as I don't know if it would work on my thick, frizzy shoulder length hair
