Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Sorry OP, can't help with the steam cleaner but mine would be a Kindle! I love reading and love holding a physical book but I'm almost certain I could read double the amount if I had a Kindle because it's much easier to get out to read for a bit, you don't even have to hold it if you don't want too! I also see physical books as a kind of trophy. But Kindles are quite pricey, and there's different versions now too. I've been debating this for about a year now.

I have a kindle paper white had it for years. Read it more than books now. I am disabled it’s lighter. I can use in the dark or the light. Can enlarge to read without my glasses. Had a steam cleaner didn’t get on with it. Gor an electric scrubbing brush for the shower tiles. It’s amazing.

A portable pilates reformer, I don’t do Pilates but it looks good and I need to exercise!!

Dont do it.

Having been spoiled by reformer 1-1. I actually at this point think it’s not even suitable for groups. And I have years of experience.

Its main value is to build control and stability. So the whole point is being able to do it only moving the very specific body parts required. So you need to be spotted by someone who knows the body. Literally - saying you dropped your right hip 1cm. You aren’t straight. Your knees aren’t at hip width.

@MissMarplesGoddaughter I got smart meters when they were a condition of getting a nice fixed rate on my energy a few years ago. Firstly the electric one didn't work and getting Eon to fix it took months. Then my gas one stopped working and had to be completely replaced, around 6 months of hassle getting it sorted. They 'estimated' my gas during that time, which was a large overestimate which also took months to come to an agreement. Their customer service is based in India. The people I dealt with were nice, but it was a different person each time so had to start explaining the issues from the start. So I've definitely not had a good experience. The meters themselves are pretty much the same across different providers and maybe I was just unlucky, but I'd say avoid Eon!

Dubarry boots

I have a pair. I really like them but have been disappointed that within a couple of years of light use despite taking care of them, they are no longer waterproof. I will buy a cheaper alternative next time.

Shark or Dyson hairdryer. Are they really any better than my standard hairdryer? I have fine, brittle hair.
Not sure I can justify the cost.

The Dyson Airwrap is amazing. There's a dryer attachment and a hot brush attachment - gives a lot of volume. I have fine thin brittle hair like you and I wouldn't be without it. Been solid since before lockdown.

Also love my kindle and use it all the time.

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

It actually hurts quite a lot, and I usually have a high pain threshold (for context: I pierced my own ears and play rugby). It also takes ages, you have to shave beforehand, and realistically who has the time. I got mine over a year ago and have only used it twice.

I use my kindle daily, and it's brilliant for holidays. I got a paperwhite for about £75 in an amazon sale, wouldn't be without it

Mine is brilliant, I haven't used it for years due to the treatment being so successful but my dds can use it in time so keeping.

Tymo hair curler/waver
Philips Lumea as well!
Hand steamer as well!

Tymo curler, brilliant! I have loads of hair and candy my whole head in 10 mins, and it lasts for days without any product, would recommend!

Oh - also how about the window vac /window cleaner gadgets. Worthwhile?

No! They are useless.

You can try out the Kindle interface by downloading the free Kindle for phone app.
Mine is Olaplex. I have dry brittle hair but a Superdrug protein treatment fried it 8 years ago si I’m scared to try it. The Aldi dupes have done nothing for my hair.

L'Oréal bond repair (pre shampoo, shampoo and conditioner) is fantastic. It's transformed my hair and I've bleached and destroyed it for 20 years. Olaplex didn't really do anything and it's so expensive too.

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 14/01/2026 16:03

Think I'm going to bite the bullet and go for the Tymo after everyone's recommendations here, thanks!

I am a total convert to kindle. I first bought one when they came out years ago but it's only in the last couple of years that I have totally switched over.
The only thing I would say is that if you buy a Kobo instead then you can use it to read library books free which you can't do on kindle. I know you can read on a tablet or phone but it's completely different. I love my kindle.

ERthree · 14/01/2026 16:04

I refused to even look at a kindle then covid hit. I couldn't imagine not having library books to read so bought a dreaded kindle. I love it, use it every night. i still use my library for books that i read during the day.

Stanley travel coffee cup
Steam mop
For anyone holding off on the robot vac..just do it! I love mine!

@Onefortheroad25 I have a Stanley travel coffee cup and it’s amazing!!!!

https://amzn.eu/d/1GrfT9l

its absolutely bomb proof - didn’t leak even when it tipped upside down somehow in my bag, when I knocked it over on my desk at work and keeps my drinks scalding hot for hours and hours.

I thought it was a ridiculous amount to spend on a coffee cup but having actually used it now im a convert

Yes to the kindle, love mine so much - i can read at night & not disturb DH & it's light to hold.

I am debating buying a wedge cushion for my office chair - i have chronic back pain & sciatica & wondering if it would help with my sitting all day. I get up & walk as much as I can, also I have a standing desk but wondering if a cushion will help. If anyone has a recommendation that would be great!

Benazcap seat cushion from Amazon has been a game changer for my husband. He's now got 2 for the 2 chairs in his study. He damaged his back years ago and can't sit in an ordinary chair. He used to walk around during board meetings before he retired as sitting on an ordinary chair gives him pain. He also has a Stressless chair (very good) and a standing desk.

I love my Kindle paperwhite. I travel on trains a lot for work and it is perfect. Really light, takes up hardly any room in the bag, I can have any book I fancy reading almost instantly, the screen is restful to look at.

My dilemma is a wig. My hair is v. thin on top - so bad that I avoid sitting under lights in case I shine and I wear a hat/cap whenever I can too. I don't know where to start looking seriously; buying online seems so risky for fit, style appearance etc.

Edited

I know what you mean.
My friend has extensions (you wouldn’t know unless you’d seen her before) but I’m just not sure. We’re in our 50’s and so not a young bouncy style!

A caravan- I envision so many great holidays but wonder if I will regret buying one and of my young teen will even want to go

MarxistMags · 14/01/2026 16:13

Air Fryer ! It's expensive IMO.

ManyATrueWord · 14/01/2026 16:15

I got a kindle paperwhite for times when I am stuck in bed. You can hold it with one hand because it is so light. Also it is backlit so you don't need to put lights on. If you wait until the Amazon deal week they usually put a good deal on. Also you can part exchange an old one.

I bought a steam cleaner. It did not take the dirt off my oven door like in the adverts, nor did it make my tile grout white. It did however sterilize the car seat beautifully after we used the carpet cleaner on it when a child threw up.

We have one and have loved it. Teen DD also loves it. We changed car so needed to pay £895 for new tow bar, car developed a fault and spent 4 months of 6 with the dealer, we ended up having to change the car, so next new car needed a tow bar. Another £895. Within 2 years, we changed the car again, and haven’t got around to having the tow bar fitted as for this car it’s just over £1000. Current car we bought in 2022 so really should have done it by now! .We miss it, but at the same time haven’t if that makes sense?
