Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Sofa, dining table, kitchen… Don’t want to make the wrong decision! Feel like I’d miss something important in the decision making process!

We have had a smart meter for a good few years. Never had a problem, and saves hassle. We are with Octopus who fitted it

Octopus are very good (great customer service too).

I’m holding off buying a Eufy robo vacuum/mop but would like one if it can tackle wooden floors, large rugs and tiles.
Got a Ninja foodi max air fryer which is brilliant- hardly use our large range oven now.
Philips lumea worked brilliantly- no hair now underarms, bikini and legs
Morphy Richards soup maker is great and used loads
Kindle paper white is brilliant for reading in bed and on holidays
Things hardly used are -
Karcher window vac
Boots LED facemask
Vibrating scrubber cleaner thing for grout/taps etc
Water flosser

Sorry OP, can't help with the steam cleaner but mine would be a Kindle! I love reading and love holding a physical book but I'm almost certain I could read double the amount if I had a Kindle because it's much easier to get out to read for a bit, you don't even have to hold it if you don't want too! I also see physical books as a kind of trophy. But Kindles are quite pricey, and there's different versions now too. I've been debating this for about a year now.

I use my kindle every single day and absolutely adore it, would never give it up now. I’m going on holiday later this month and I’ll load it with books before I go, the charge lasts usually a month or so for me. Best buy ever, and I was previously very anti!

Loving this thread!

Is there a lumea alternative that works on wiry ginger hair does anybody know?

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 14/01/2026 14:00

Air purefier

Trainup · 14/01/2026 14:04

If anyone is thinking of buying the Dyson airwrap they can save their money! I have one and it in no way compares to the curls or waves you get with tongs or straighteners and the curling is just as much of a faff

Mich1986 · 14/01/2026 14:06

Oura ring
red light therapy mask or stand

I've had Kindles for about 20 years and read a lot. I now find that I don't like reading a physical book but when I'm reading on Kindle I often break off to check something using the internet, often annoying myself!
I'm holding off buying a Karcher Window vac, not sure how good they are for cleaning windows.

Tymo hair curler/waver
Philips Lumea as well!
Hand steamer as well!

I got my daughter the Tymo curler for Christmas and it's really good!

I felt the same as you. Then DH bought me one just before Christmas as we were going to South America for three weeks and I obvs couldn't take loads of books. It was great for travelling and I was able to read and download new stuff whilst I was away. I will still buy and read "real" books now I'm home but I use it to read at night in bed as I can do it in the dark. I really recommend it.

thermomix.. its SO ex. I love how easy it looks/is tho.

I triewd one quite a few years ago from QVC I found it massively noisy. Luckily they accepted used returns so back it went.

fabulous!! You have to buy in to a totally different way of window cleaning for it to work properly though. Much more liquid. I use HG concentrated cleaner in a spray.

goldenhunter · 14/01/2026 14:16

Steam cleaner wasnt worth it for me - I’ve only used maybe twice?

Phillips Lumea has worked brilliantly for me as I’m pale with dark hair. Bought it about 6 years ago and had to pause for both pregnancies, but I have hardly any hair on my lower legs or armpits now. Just starting to tackle upper legs / bikini line!

kindle - wouldn’t be without. Never thought I’d like it but I’ve hardly touched a physical book since getting one!

robot hoover - brilliant. Set it off downstairs every morning after lifting a couple of lighter rugs. Cleans my hard floors really well, and keeps on top of dog hair and kids crumbs! Makes my house feel loads cleaner with no effort needed.

Shark hair styler - has been great for my fine hair, I can get a properly bouncy blow dry look in about 10 mins start to finish! Don’t buy one if you’re after long lasting curls though, it’s a blow dry tool really.

oura ring - love mine as smart watches give me allergic reactions. It’s a wellbeing tracker more than a fitness tracker though, great for monitoring general activity levels, cycle tracking (period start predictor is incredibly accurate for me), sleep, stress etc but not so great if you want to be able to use it to track how far you’ve run / swam etc.

im putting off buying a LED face mask as I don’t know if its worth it, and if I’d be committed enough to using it!!

It works! Mine is one of my best ever purchases, and was recommended by a friend who says it’s her best purchase too

Does it hurt to use at all?

Anyone used the Ziip halo? Does it work? All I can see online video reviews are either US or those in UK where it is a partnership with ziip #paidfor ad, and or users clearly have fillers and or Botox as well. Or are too young! I am now just 50s and sagging a bit, will halo work for me? SO expensive. I have the nuface and it’s a bit meh…

I got a Ziip Halo for Christmas after watching Sali Hughes' non sponsored review. She wont be drawn on the science aspect of it but she said that if she doesn't use it she can visibly tell the difference and she also notices if friends are using theirs.

Im 50 this year and have no Botox as I'm resistant so I was looking for some effective home devices. I've been using it consistently 5 days a week (alongside my Current Body LED face mask). So far 3 different people have said my skin looks good so I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about it.

The drawbacks so far
You have the option of individual treatments or you can choose a "plan". I chose the 14 day non surgical facelift plan, this is a specific collection of the individual treatments and on some mornings it was around 15 mins to complete that days routine which is a bit of a faff. I would have liked a quick guide showing me each days treatment length so could plan better. Also the Ziip switches off after one treatment so you have to switch on again to move on to the next treatment and it can be a bit fiddley with gel over the device.

The price of the gels from Ziip are expensive and I don't think I can justify that additional cost so I will have to shop around to see if any others are as good. Sali Huges has mentioned some options and aloe vera with some added salt also seems to be a popular alternative. However, I will say that the Ziip gel supplied has been very gentle on my reactive sensitive skin. I have mild peri oral dermatitis and can get a bit of rosacea, the Ziip gel has not triggered any kind of outbreak. I did get one chin spot in the first couple of days so I have been extra vigilant with my cleansing afterwards and not had a repeat.

As you are following a video guide while completing each treatment it can get a bit repetitive but I'm sure after a couple of months I will just choose individual treatments and know what to do.

MyLimeZebra · 14/01/2026 14:23

I got influenced to buy a steam cleaner and honestly it’s rubbish, spray and a cloth/sponge works so much better.
I actually fill a dishmatic sponge with bleach and swear by it for cleaning bathrooms.

love my kindle though!

Mithral · 14/01/2026 14:27

Love my kindle, use it everyday.

Lumea worked on my legs (which I don't really care about anyway) but for some reason has done nothing for my tash!

I’ve got the kindle app on my phone & iPad , it’s great I can read anywhere

bobby81 · 14/01/2026 14:29

I really rate the Lumea. Although I know it doesn’t work for everyone.

Dyson hairdryer was a complete waste of money. It broke after a couple of years & I replaced with a £20 boots one which does exactly the same job. I have very straight, fine hair.

I used to have a steam cleaner & hardly used it for cleaning. It was however absolutely brilliant when our cat had fleas - I steamed all the soft furnishings which killed the fleas & eggs without the need for chemicals.

I don't use my kindle but do use the kindle app on my phone.

I'm trying to decide whether taking collagen is worth it! It's expensive.

I'm trying to decide whether taking collagen is worth it! It's expensive

Tried for my knees, cheaper 1’s & more costly greenlipped mussels 1, can’t honestly say i felt much benefit. Didn’t notice anything different in skin condition either but I was about 63-66 at the time so maybe shouldn’t be surprised? 😆
But, once I’d stopped, realised I wasn’t farting anymore🙄. Reading afterwards, it’s advised should gradually build up to full dose as digestive system needs to “adjust to new protein” 🤔🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ & also drink plenty fluids! tho was deffo doing that for completely unconnected condition.

Electric car

Yes if it is a second car so you can go for something small and won’t depend on it for long journeys. If it is your only car and you regularly do journeys of more than 100 miles then think carefully and research charging places on your journey.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 14/01/2026 14:31

I have a kindle paper white and love it
I have a robot vac that also mops and also love it.

Am also interested in the LED masks

I have a shark cryo mask and love it. My skin feels plump, and its definitely looking clearer.

@Mich1986 I like my Oura ring. Can’t wear watches as I get allergic reactions to them but the ring is fine. I’m not convinced that it is worth buying the latest version. I’d stick with buying the gen 3 as they are more reasonably priced. There is a small monthly charge for the subscription in case you weren’t aware.
