Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

Tymo hair curler/waver
Philips Lumea as well!
Hand steamer as well!

I got my daughter a tymo curl pro plus - its fantastic. Keep an eye on the prices though as they drop regularly and there is always a discount code on the go. I got her delivered for 63.00

Soupdragon41 · 14/01/2026 13:34

Love my steam cleaner, mine is a floor mop one which comes apart to be a hand held as well. Its a shark one. Wouldn’t be without it

Oh - also how about the window vac /window cleaner gadgets. Worthwhile?

Mine smeared so I ended up doing them normally. It’s the Karcher one

NameChangePoP · 14/01/2026 13:35

To those that have mentioned a Phillips Lumea - do it!! I bit the bullet and splurged, and it's honestly amazing. As long as you keep up the routine you will be virtually fuzz free. I can go weeks without the need to shave my legs or armpits, and any regrowth is minimal and fine.

Mine is handheld/cordless stick vacuums.

I have a full size shark which is mega.
But whilst it's good on hard floors, it struggles with bits of stray cat litter or bigger bits of dirt, so I'm endlessly stopping to use the hose to get bits, then when I think I've got them and can go back to pushing the hoover around, I find more.

Is a cordless likely to be any better with bigger bits on a hard floor?

It’s no better than the plug in as a floor vac. It gets blocked a lot! Handheld it works fine though and I like the stair attachment

Yes to the Lumea.

An LED face mask. I see loads of people online using them but I wonder if they actually do anything. I also fear I’d find it claustrophobic and not use it and have a slight concern it would explode on my face.

Sleep headphones on a band. My air pods hurt one ear and fall out but as above I’m worried I’ll hate the feeling of it and also it will somehow strangle me in my sleep.

I love my CurrentBody Skin.

My face looks brighter after three months’ use.

Skecherslover · 14/01/2026 13:36

I like my window vac and like a PP I mainly use it for condensation, particularly in my car which gets very damp inside, absolute game changer.

I don't have a slow cooker or airfryer, can't decide if I would just be duplicating the oven. Any info welcome.

Got an air fryer as a present when moved in to my new house over a year ago- i say have used it three times. Don't get it at all, no time saving whatsoever compared to my oven , plus my oven in the wall, not a thing cluttering up my counter
Now MIL has one she in her mid 80's used every day nearly as she cooking for one and no bending down to oven
Robot hoover is my best purchase ever

Long (back bra strap length) fine strands but a lot of it so quite thick in that and wavy/curly with a lot of frizz. Think Hagrid from Harry Potter!

Just been to the hairdresser this morning and she was impressed at the condition my hair is in. I got the dryer for Christmas and wouldn’t have bought it myself but that anti frizz attachment is just amazing. Especially with a little product on to help smoothing like a hair oil. I use a Kerastase one but can’t remember the name. It’s a gold colour bottle!

‘Think Hagrid from Harry Potter’

Hahahaha! That’s what I look like if I don’t dry and straighten my (very fine) hair. That, or Stig Of The Dump for those old enough to remember!!!!

Vax pet spot carpet cleaner. I don't have pets but I've seen it work magic on carpet stains so considering investing.

Water flosser. I hate string floss, wondering if this might be better.

I.have a water flosser. The first one I had was a Waterpic (think that's the brand) which was expensive and stopped working a couple of days after the warranty expired 🙄 I now have a smaller one from a different brand, much easier to clean, and it's been going strong for a few years now. Have to say, my hygienist says water floss once a day, and use actual floss the other time you brush your teeth...

@evilharpy I love my ninja creami. Not used it so much in the winter. It works really well with diet shakes and added protein powder to make high protein ice cream without too many calories. It is a bit out of sight out of mind though, if it s shut away in a cupboard you do tend to forget about it. It is quite heavy to move around so works best if you have it out on the counter. It is very noisy. Lots of recipes on line but loads of them are American and talk about instant pudding mix. I usually put in a bit of angel delight instead.

I have both and would always replace if broken. In the winter I use the slow cooker a lot. I actually have it on now for dinner later, just shoved everything in about 10.30 this morning. It’s used so much my son took one to uni. (We’re a stew during winter family 😁). It’s a lot cheaper to run than the oven (I can see the oven usage spikes on my Octopus app). The airfryer is great too, you can put things in with no need to hover over it. I put bacon in yesterday, and warmed up a flatbread (doesn’t go soggy like the microwave). I use it mainly to warm things like left over pizza slices as they stay crisp but it’s pretty versatile. I’ll look chicken strips for fajitas instead of using a pan, for instance. Total convert for both items.

I keep seeing a vibrating cleaning thing, it also has a handle that would do my tiles, i have nearly bought it twice, but it might be crap and sit in a cupboard because i wouldn't throw it out.

I returned mine. Absolute crap. You end up moving dirt around as it's difficult to rinse.

lifetheuniverseandeverything42 · 14/01/2026 13:44

@IdrisElbowhave you tried putting warm water in the water flosser? Much nicer to use with warm water.

Sorry OP, can't help with the steam cleaner but mine would be a Kindle! I love reading and love holding a physical book but I'm almost certain I could read double the amount if I had a Kindle because it's much easier to get out to read for a bit, you don't even have to hold it if you don't want too! I also see physical books as a kind of trophy. But Kindles are quite pricey, and there's different versions now too. I've been debating this for about a year now.

Love my paperwhite kindle. I would definitely go for it.

Rightsraptor · 14/01/2026 13:45

I have an air fryer which I use several times on most day. I live alone but had read enough to know not to get a one drawer fryer; mine has 2 which are independent of each other. I've used the big oven maybe 4 times in 18 months since I've had the fryer.

I haven't read the whole thread but I'm confused by the steam cleaner bits that seem mixed up with clothes steamers - surely they're different items or can you get one that does lots of jobs? I have a steam floor cleaner (Shark) which is great. I want a steamer for clothes. Maybe I should have got a different Shark?

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 14/01/2026 13:46

I love my Kindle. I read so much and the Kindle makes that so much easier. I’m old enough to remember going on holiday with my family for two weeks and us needing a small suitcase for all of our books. Now I can fit the whole library in my handbag!

Boobyslims · 14/01/2026 13:46

Things I’m holding off buying …

TYMO hair brush straightener all in one thingee, just can’t decide if it’d another one of those meh things

two IKEA billy book cases sitting in a basket. Moved into new house three months ago and can’t bring myself to commit to ANY furniture purchases as they I’m committed to some style, so all the kids books are still in boxes 🙈 Totally overthinking it!!!

home treadmill. Will I use it? Or will it become a clothes rack?

Now I’m thinking I also need a hand held iron, a robot hoover and a Philips lumeu as a matter of urgency!

travailtotravel · 14/01/2026 13:47

Oh, I have been holding off on one of those hot hairbrushes that are apparently a miracle for short hair and can be popped in your handbag... are they? Or am I just susceptible to social media ads?

And recently, those vacuum bags for packing that come with a little portable vacuum pump thing. I often have to travel with hand luggage ....

I have a vibrating cleaning thing. Don’t bother, it’s crap.

Tymo hair curler/waver
Philips Lumea as well!
Hand steamer as well!

Both the tymo hair curler and a steam cleaner are fantastic! (Can’t comment on the limes)
I give whatever I’m wearing a quick steam in the mornings - I hardly ever use my iron. The tymo has been a life changer - I curl my hair every few days and it stays wavy between washes. It’s so easy to use.

Alexa

EnglishGirlApproximately · 14/01/2026 13:51

I'm also looking at steam cleaners, feel like it would be good for things like around the taps and the shower hose? I use my clothes steamer a lot as I travel for work and quality and availability of hotel irons is variable.
I'd replace my robovac the same day if it broke it's brilliant and I only have a basic Eufy.

Same with my Kindle - lots of work travel and so much easier to carry, don't have to think about how many books to take or even worse, hating the book I've taken but wadi g through because it's all I have! Kindle Unlimited is one of the few subscriptions I genuinely think I get good value from.

Alexa

I hate it when I go away and haven't got Alexa to set timers and alarms, or ask random stuff.
