I’m on nights and fancy something to read.

Thanks

LW but I believe sex is real and immutable and that driving convictions should lead to a loss of licence for years if not forever.

CreativeGreen · 13/01/2026 12:46

No, sorry, @Piglet89 , I know you didn't - just if that were a founding premise for a party, I'd struggle with it.

I feel like I have enough of a struggle with those things like manners, etiquette and education from white British people before even getting on to other cultures, though.

@CreativeGreen I do not agree with your second paragraph. My point is quite nuanced and is to do with the kind of Thatcherite Tory mindset which seems more prevalent some cultures: concentric circles of involvement and concern. Me, my immediate family, my community and then fuck anybody else and definitely not giving a shit about strangers. This erodes the fabric of society.

And I see it ALL. THE. TIME.

Alexandra2001 · 13/01/2026 12:53

Left wing or rather centre but the spectrum moved...

Defence and law and order, we don't do enough on either...its criminal Sunak/Bojo carried on cutting defence after Ukraine.

Welfare.. everyone should have a chance at bettering themselves but if they refuse work or make no effort to get work... then benefits have to come at a cost ie made to do something for them.

But how do you guarantee the children benefit from the money? I always think about this when I see posts such as yours.

There are no guarantees, but don't most people prioritise their children when deciding how to use their resources?

DolefullySingingMotherfucka · 13/01/2026 13:06

I'm on the left, but I'm not convinced that the push for inclusion of children with special educational needs in mainstream schools is likely to deliver the best possible education for children with or without SEN.

RingoJuice · 13/01/2026 13:07

I see abortion as an infringement of the right to life and want to protect those who do not have the ability to defend themselves. I see that as a natural left wing position

It always seemed sort of left-wing to me! The way pro-lifers talk about abortion really is very left-coded. They’ll talk about how ‘ableist’ and ‘racist’ (in the US context) it is, sometimes I don’t know if it’s just to be persuasive to the left or if they really think this way …

I have actually thought about this a lot LOL and I guess the right-wing interpretation is that you should take personal responsibility for your actions (by either using protection/abstinence or accepting the responsibility of parenthood), but isn’t having an abortion exercising personal responsibility?

Supporterofwomensrights · 13/01/2026 13:10

I think being anti-abortion in the US is usually a religious position.

Here, I think for many it is more likely to be ethics around right to live, etc.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/01/2026 13:16

Left left left wing.

Dont really believe in climate change. Want to stop the boats.

I don't mean to downplay anything you see, genuinely. It's just, that description applies perfectly to, for example, the flaggers round where I live. These things depend where we live and who and what we see, right? And that kind of, "fuck the rest of you if you don't like this, this is how it's going to be, we like it and if you don't you can fuck off" - I hate it when I see it from them and no doubt would from any other group who behaved in that way.

You would think so. But there’s obviously those who don’t so how can it be guaranteed the children benefit from the money?

I’m not in the UK but I do enjoy these threads and it’s something I always ponder when the subject comes up.

You can't guarantee it. I think quite a large minority knowingly don't put their children first but even amongst those that think they are prioritising their kids, there is an awful lot of terrible decisions making and objectively poor parenting going on, especially amongst families that have already made the questionable decision to have more children than they can afford to have in the first place.

I have seen parents fast tracking blending their families with uncommitted and questionable partners, allowing children to spend hours on end on inappropriate computer games and social media, feeding their kids absolute crap and not being at all invested in things that would help their child long term like education and pursuing interests. Most of these parents claim their children are their everything.

Sadly the reality is that some people aren't equipped to be fantastic parents that make great decisions. Trauma, intergenerational patterns and lack of education undoubtedly play a role. Pretending that money is the issue is just looking for an easy solution to a problem that humans have been grappling with for hundreds of years. How do you shelter innocent children from the impact of being born to feckless people that don't have the resources or skills to parent them properly?

PattiPatty · 13/01/2026 13:45

Left of centre.
Most LW view is that all public utilities and transport should be nationalised. It's wrong that the poorer you are the more you have to pay and water or electricity should cost everyone the same.
I think that right to buy was the worst policy of the Thatcher government and should be reversed. No tenant should be able to buy social housing and councils should be obliged to buy homes to add to their social housing stock.

Most RW view is that the NHS should be abolished in it's current form and replaced with a system like Australia or similar.
I also think that immigrants should be encouraged to fully integrate and citizenship should depend on them demonstrating that they have integrated and adopted our values.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/01/2026 13:52

I'm a centrist.

Most LW view all inheritance sbould be raxed as income (with the exception of inheriting your principal private residence)

Most RW view, people found littering or flytipping should be forced to carry out free litter picking/environmental cleaning work for the council.

I wonder, with questions like this and no defined terms. What Is left wing? What Is right wing? We surely have differences in opinion on that, unsurprisingly because they are rather fluid concepts.

If we have an agreed definition - I’ll be able to answer.

True... & for me its fluid, the centre is always moving eg Sunak was always considered to the right of the Tory party, now he'd be considered to the left...

Hardcore Thatcherites, like Major, Helseltine, Clarke denounced the Con party....

Now we have someone like Starmer who would have fitted in nicely in Cameron's Govt.

Regarding Cameron and Starmer yes I agree. I could certainly imagine Starmer in a similar Oxford piggate scandal, as Cameron endured.

Livingonbananabread · 13/01/2026 14:26

I’ve always thought of myself as left-wing, but that went hand in hand with considering myself progressive. Then the goalposts shifted, and I found myself actively opposed to most supposedly progressive causes.

I don’t believe TWAW.
I don’t think surrogacy should be legal.
I don’t believe sex work is work.
I believe in Israel’s right to exist and defend itself.
I’m horrified by the prospect of assisted dying.

But whenever I think maybe I’m actually right wing these days I’ll talk to my Tory father-in-law and discover he doesn’t believe in taxation, welfare or the NHS, still backs Brexit and would reinstate the death penalty…and I find myself clinging to the Guardian.

SerendipityJane · 13/01/2026 14:29

I( am very much an old school leftie hippy in most things.

However I would happy support summary execution for litterbugs, flytippers and people who vandalise public property.

I guess as a sop to my otherwise entrenched abolitionist views, I'd settle for cutting their goolies off.

Redscrunchie · 13/01/2026 14:31

I’m RW and the only one I can think of is that there should protections/ welfare for those who really need it.

The trouble is that those who really need it is a matter of personal opinion.

Starmer is far too straight laced for that, i doubt he has put anything in any ones mouth

Cameron "endured" this because he almost certainly did it...

Fernsrus · 13/01/2026 14:34

I’m in no party, nor would want to be now, but I believe in fairness, respect for others, equality for all, and ensuring the distribution of resources is fairer than it has been.

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/01/2026 14:35

I'm left of centre. I love my region's grammar and single sex schools. I think we need to bring in some sort of payment plan for the NHS. I think religion can be a force for good.

NotableI · 13/01/2026 14:37

Left wing… disruptive children should be removed from classes so the others can learn

Retrokid · 13/01/2026 14:42

I’m a democratic socialist, and I support treating transgender people with dignity and respect. However, I don’t believe that identifying as a different gender changes a person’s biological sex. My concern is primarily medical: if biological sex is overlooked in healthcare or policy, we may face serious long-term consequences, particularly where people do not receive appropriate sex-based health screenings. Respecting people socially does not require us to ignore biological sex in medical or policy contexts. Both can be acknowledged at the same time.
