Have you gone DVD free?

DH wants to...but we have loads of old e.g. BBC dramas on dvd which I do like to watch every now and again. I can't find them to buy online. One I found on Apple TV but when I clicked on it to see how much it cost, it took me to Amazon prime. Which we don't subscribe to. Is there a way of buying a film (not renting it like you do with kindle purchases) or tv series without having to subscribe to all the different steaming services? We already have Netflix.

Bit short sighted to ditch them all tbh
I disagree.
When streaming services have gone down it doesn't make a difference to me.
Theres no film that I'm going to miss if I never see it again.

and also, how often has everything gone down. I actually have never had this happen.I’ve had my sky not working for a day once, I just watched something else on Netflix. And my whole internet has gone off for maybe 10 mins at a time sometimes. If it does go down for longer, I think I would survive. The extra clutter of a million dvds is just not something I personally need/want

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 07/01/2026 22:49

It's been many years since we had DVDs, although I think we could play them through an Xbox we have if we wanted to. They're obsolete. If someone 'switches off the internet', the least of my worries would be what I'm going to watch.

shouldofgotamortage · 07/01/2026 22:52

No, because streaming sites have ads, don’t always have what you want to watch anywhere, or you have to pay to rent extra stuff. Many people are moving back to dvds.

We love our dvds. Great for holidays where no signal, having dedicated "movie" family sessions. And no subscription required. Buy from charity shops (or have already).

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/01/2026 23:04

Often watch a DVD from a pretty extensive collection.

Runnersandtoms · 07/01/2026 23:08

Dh had hundreds of dvds and cds and got rid of (sold) all but a handful that are special eg signed, or unusual. I kept some of my favourites. We have Netflix and prime but it still seems like every time we think of a film we'd like to watch it's not available. It's really annoying when it's a film I know we used to own. I feel justified in keeping my Friends boxset as it is now going from Netflix.

Bit short sighted to ditch them all tbh. We still have plenty stashed away, plus others I have saved on hard drives.

100% agree. People will realise you're right......... eventually.... Wink

Clearly, you are not much of a film fan/film buff.

Some of us are.

Lucky you, only losing your internet for 10 minutes.

We have lost ours for a few days, quite a number of times. We live in the sticks, and high up, and high winds often knock out our internet. As do storms.... Probably going to lose it in the next few days with the huge storm that's coming.

Fine if that never happens to you though. You keep relying on streaming.... I'll keep my 1200 DVDs though ta.

echt · 07/01/2026 23:17

I've kept all mine. Not everything is on the internet. To be fair, mine are in the back room as they are far from decorative. Unlike books.

Interestingly, my DD who is 18 and doing filmmaking at university has become obsessed with collecting DVDs. She’s got a little mini player and TV and it’s really popular with all her friends. She’s got loads of all our old classics and buys various ones she likes from car boot sales and charity shops. She’s loves displaying her cool DVDs on the shelf and showing off. Grin

This makes me feel so fucking old. I’m 38. Holy fuck.

LilyFeather · 07/01/2026 23:23

I like to move with the times as much as possible so I don’t think I’ve owned a DVD in close to two decades

RedRiverShore6 · 08/01/2026 08:08

I keep most of the DVDs in a cupboard in the spare room so they are not cluttering up downstairs, the DVD players sit with the Sky boxes and Apple TV boxes so not in the way.

Yes, my 18 and 21 year olds always ask for DVDs for birthday/Christmas (and my 21 year old just graduated in film making!)

And my 15 year old asked for a portable dvd player with screen for Christmas.
My kids are increasingly trying to unplug from the internet. They recognise how it steals time.

needmorebooks · 08/01/2026 16:45

No the opposite. Fed up of wanting to watch a film and the streaming services has removed it. DH and I are rebuying our fave films on DVD/BluRAY so we own them and they can’t edit or stop streaming them.

mrshenny · 08/01/2026 17:02

We’ve actually just dug out our old DVD player and bought a bunch of Disney DVD’s from charity shops and cancelled our Disney+! It’s going to save us so much this year, the kids seem to love it too!

Tontostitis · 08/01/2026 17:07

We still have some DVDs which came in handy when the internet went down for 2 days or they would have if we'd known that you need to download the DVD player onto your Xbox it's no longer installed as standard. As you need the internet to download the DVD player it was pretty useless.

The editing and/or censoring is getting ridiculous I really wish I'd kept all our boxed sets

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/01/2026 17:13

haven’t had a dvd player for years. mo miss

DoIdriveaVauxhallZafira · 08/01/2026 17:21

I'm reverting. Not buying masses, but picking up favourite films & TV shows. Problem with digital is that you never own them & amazon sticking adverts into films I've purchased means I don't see the point any more.

Summerunlover · 08/01/2026 17:42

I got rid of mine about 15 years ago.

yonem · 08/01/2026 17:51

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/01/2026 17:48

I can’t remember the last time I watched a DVD. I must be missing a gene as I don’t ever watch things over and over again. Once I’ve seen something, I’ve seen it. I’m very curious about what people rewatch. And why?

You don’t need to keep them/rewatch them. Some of them I buy from the charity shop, watch and then donate them back again. Cheaper than blockbuster was or buying them digitally.

CyberWithRosie · 08/01/2026 18:11

I still have a DVD player, and quite a few DVDs. I find that recent or blockbuster films are available on multiple streaming sites, but the more obscure ones aren't available on any of them.

I also have a few favourite VHS tapes that I can't bear to get rid of, but no VHS player! If I find one for sale, I may well buy it and store it in the utility room so DH doesn't see it

NoKnit · 08/01/2026 18:15

Sold them all for few quid each back on 2009 my husband predicted it. We made a fair amount of cash and never missed them
