Have you gone DVD free?

DH wants to...but we have loads of old e.g. BBC dramas on dvd which I do like to watch every now and again. I can't find them to buy online. One I found on Apple TV but when I clicked on it to see how much it cost, it took me to Amazon prime. Which we don't subscribe to. Is there a way of buying a film (not renting it like you do with kindle purchases) or tv series without having to subscribe to all the different steaming services? We already have Netflix.

Binned ours years ago along with the DVD player

ScholesPanda · 07/01/2026 18:54

Placemarking the thread as I'm having this very debate (with myself, DH has about three DVDs).

DVD player lies unplugged in a cupboard and even DVDs that I think 'I must watch that', I don't actually ever get round to doing it.

But if I get rid, I'm worried I'll have lost things that aren't on streaming networks and will be hard to get back.

Blandishment · 07/01/2026 18:54

No still clinging on and now Friends has come off Netflix I'm very glad I still have my DVD collection.

DVDs are also great for older, b&W classic films which aren't on streamers or even 'To Buy/Rent' on Amazon and rarely appear on television and for foreign films.

The charity shop I volunteer in sells them at 4 for a quid. I can play my dvds on a console I just took them out of cases and have them in folders. Some are quite obscure foreign language films and not available to stream. We do have Netflix as well.

timetogetlost · 07/01/2026 19:02

Back to the old school. Streaming services are crap. Paying to be on the platform, then paying to rent a film? No thanks. You can rely on a DVD. It is yours and it is there. Much the same CDs.

drusilla49 · 07/01/2026 19:03

I got rid of all mine years ago except for my Buffy collection and Twin Peaks 😆 CDs too

DrowningInThings · 07/01/2026 19:05

Hmmm maybe an external reader is the way to go. There are some times when both DH and I are watching something and one of the DC wants to watch something different. Then I could watch on the computer.

I thought everyone had got rid of them, we did about 15 years ago. Fo you actually sit snd watch them?

to be fair we have all the streaming services, apple, Disney, Netflix, Amazon, sky, paramount, Disney plus. So no need for dvds too.

Edited

I got rid of cds a long time ago too; I use Spotify now, download it, it’s yours, can listen to any music at your finger tips;

Ive not had dvds ( or cds) for years.

Same!!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 07/01/2026 19:07

I have a few DVDs- mainly things that I can't find online.

I have films on Amazon, and have access to Disney+ as a perk of my bank account (providing that I endure advertisements).

DrEmilyCrabtree · 07/01/2026 19:09

I still have dvds and cds. 2 dvd players (lounge and bedroom) and an external dvd/cd drive for the laptop. They have reduced in number but there's still a fair few. So useful when the Internet isn't working - and to watch things that aren't streaming or are an extra charge. My car has a USB so I ripped a ton of cds to put on there. Definitely worth keeping

So do we have all the streamers and Sky but still have to watch DVDs because a lot of stuff isn't shown. I had to buy My So Called Life as an example.

Jellyslothbridge · 07/01/2026 19:11

We have quite a few DVDs bluerays and CDs. Our young adult children's friends are in awe and reccomend we keep them partly due to the censorship of some films or not being available anymore. I like the idea of storing in a more compact manner.

Iocanepowder · 07/01/2026 19:15

Yes we have them.

There’s a film my 5 year old likes that has just come off Netflix, but I already had it on dvd so now he watches it on my portable dvd player.

Also we got rid of Disney+ and still have Disney dvds.

GarlicBreadStan · 07/01/2026 19:18

My partner has well over 1,000 Blu-ray's. He does like streaming shows and films but has always said that if that was ever disallowed or it became more expensive to stream (not that it isn't already) or the servers went down, he would still have access to enough films to last him a few months

Iceshine · 07/01/2026 19:19

I dont own any DVDS or CDS or a TV.
What i do have is good wifi a good laptop, westream youtube all free to use plus and others.

romdowa · 07/01/2026 19:26

I started recollecting dvds last year , a lot of older tv series i wanted to watch just couldnt be found online. Same with older kids shows , I actually got a bundle of them free on facebook , we cherry picked what we wanted and sold the rest to cex. So it was a win win

bcski · 07/01/2026 19:29

No and in fact I've started building up my collection again by buying them second hand online.
Netflix and Amazon Prime have gone downhill. I subscribe to one or the other for a few months and then when I get sick of them because there's so much shite on there these days I cancel them and watch DVDs for a few months. I don't have space for them to stay in their boxes. They are in folders with sleeves.
I bought a plug in DVD player for the laptop for about €15.

pandaskitchen · 07/01/2026 19:36

Yes, we have our favourite DVDs still. Great when the Internet went down a few weeks ago. DP is into audio visual stuff as a hobby, so he loves plugging in & messing about with the different mediums- surround sound, amplifiers etc.

Growlybear83 · 07/01/2026 19:37

we’ve still got all our DVDs, and several VHS tapes too. I still buy DVDs occasionally because I’ve not been able to find anywhere to stream or download things I want to watch.

InfoSecInTheCity · 07/01/2026 19:53

DH is in the middle of a project to create his own server with all our DVDs on that can be hooked up to our home network and used like Netflix. He’s done it the wrong way round though and started with the films which are relatively quick and just one file, leaving all the box sets with 20 DVDs and hundreds of files to the end. I foresee this becoming one of those projects that never gets finished.

Like what would you like to watch you can’t stream?

Isn’t that on Netflix?

OSTMusTisNT · 07/01/2026 19:58

DVD player went in the bin years ago, I think I can still play DVDs on the PS5 but never felt the need.
