Have you gone DVD free?

DH wants to...but we have loads of old e.g. BBC dramas on dvd which I do like to watch every now and again. I can't find them to buy online. One I found on Apple TV but when I clicked on it to see how much it cost, it took me to Amazon prime. Which we don't subscribe to. Is there a way of buying a film (not renting it like you do with kindle purchases) or tv series without having to subscribe to all the different steaming services? We already have Netflix.

I got a folder from Amazon which holds 500 discs. I put them in there and got rid of the cases. This way you get to keep them and reduce space.

purpleme12 · 07/01/2026 17:56

No I'd hate to get rid of my DVDs

I've got 140 (some are boxsets of course)

My child has 60 that I've got for her over the years. I could probably get rid of some of hers mind if I'm being ruthless cos I don't think she'd be too bothered.

I managed to find a DVD storage cupboard big enough for them. Although it's full! That fits under the Tele so I was really happy when I found that

Thoseslippers · 07/01/2026 18:00

No i collect dvds as I can't afford all the different streaming services.
I do have prime, netflix, shudder and mubi.. and still most of my dvd films are not on these services.
I'd keep the ones you can't get access to. Why does your dh want you to get rid of them if you watch them sometimes? That seems really unfair. Just because they aren't important to him doesn't mean he gets to decide they are a waste of space.
My husband has loads of books about maths that are completely meaningless to me. I'd never in a million years single them out as something to get rid of to make soace as I know he values them.
It's not ok that your husband is trying to get rid of things you actually use

Anything that I really like music/film/TV wise I buy the CD/DVD, I like to know I have my own copy I can use whenever I want. It’s only a handful of items a year, anyway, so doesn’t cause too much clutter.

newornotnew · 07/01/2026 18:06

Lose the cases, keep the discs. I wouldn't get rid of them.

Ladyofthepond · 07/01/2026 18:07

We still have them, although admittedly we have a large loft space to store them - although seeing someone's comment about getting a folder to store the discs in has given me pause for thought!

We're cutting down on the streaming services we use, and are trying to be more mindful about what we watch. We've also been lending DVD's to friends lately, usually box sets of series.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 07/01/2026 18:19

Haven’t had dvds or cds for years

singthing · 07/01/2026 18:25

I usually watch streaming, but I've also got a cupboard full of DVDs and a player. Mostly "comfort" viewing I will watch multiple times. In fact watched a film just last weekend.

Is it Mad Men that has had a specific episode removed from streaming for some reason? Well, I can watch it anytime I like! (possibly the world's crappiest brag....)

DiscoBeat · 07/01/2026 18:27

I have taken my favourites out of their cases and put them in a wallet file which takes almost no space. You often have to pay for things on streaming even with a couple of subscriptions, and you never know if you could be without internet for a few days.

DarkEyedSailor · 07/01/2026 18:29

No, I've got lots. And CDs.

MouseCheese87 · 07/01/2026 18:31

Not had CDs in years, got 3 or 4 DVDs of films we wanted to watch but couldn't find on streaming, but we have not watched them in a few years.

EmeraldRoulette · 07/01/2026 18:32

Still got them

And so nice to have the DVD extras

And just nice to rewatch the most comforting stuff. And not have to worry that you haven't got the right subscription service, etc

I have a problem with space, but I kept them, put them in a sleeve thingy so I could get rid of the cases.

Thebeehiveflys · 07/01/2026 18:38

Some things you just can’t stream so we keep a dvd player for our very old films to occasionally watch…..however….we took 2 dvds to centreparcs recently and had to ask for a dvd player to our lodge, we heard the man laughing in the background as he said they could still supply one to borrow!!! 😂

Billyboon · 07/01/2026 18:38

No and I wouldn't advise it! More and more people are getting their DVDs out again!. Unless you fly below the radar with your TV streaming, you'll be disappointed with the film offerings on Netflix, Prime etc.

I'm very glad we kept our DVDs (removed from their cases and put in one of those file things) as the Christmas film offerings were absolutely shite this year. No Elf and no National Lampoon Christmas Vacation on terrestrial TV, Netflix or Prime!

MeganM3 · 07/01/2026 18:40

Haven’t had any DVDs for at least 10 years and I’ve never missed them or wanted to watch anything on DVD. Everything’s online.

HippyChickMama · 07/01/2026 18:40

We have a big bookcase full of DVDs and Blu Ray. I like obscure old horror films and anthologies that are rarely available on streaming services and dh likes to buy special editions of his favourite films. Even ds, who is 18, has a blu ray player and box sets of things he likes that he can’t rely on being on or staying on streaming services.

ThePhantomsMask · 07/01/2026 18:43

I could never give up on physical media. We have heaps of favourites that aren't on streaming services, and I hate having to pay for a month of something just to watch one movie.

Even buying digitally doesn't guarantee that you can always watch it, so I like the security of having the actual discs.
I keep a list of movies we want to add to our collection and my daughter and I love hunting through the second hand stores to see what treasures we can find.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 07/01/2026 18:44

Yes i still have a collection of both and have a dvd player in my bedroom.

Gagamama2 · 07/01/2026 18:44

I had a strop over Christmas when I realised how much we were paying for Netflix, Paramount, Disney, Amazon and god knows what else and I STILL had to pay an extra £8 (£8?!?) to watch Apollo 13 with my 10 yr old. I actually cancelled everything except Netflix and bought about 30 DvDs to start a DvD collections again (including a brand new sealed dvd of Apollo 13 for £1.80).

id hold onto them. But maybe im wierd. I bought a mini dvd player off amazon for about £20. The kids have been loving it - they’ve all been watching old Tom and Jerry cartoons on it together after school. It’s been nice and much calmer than the plethora of choice on the streaming apps - there’s usually an argument about what they watch, and they flick about between things all the time. The dvd has made screen time a bit more focused / slower paced. And they can see what we have better. I find once I download something it’s watched but then lost because you can’t easily see what app it’s been downloaded to

Nourishinghandcream · 07/01/2026 18:46

Still watch & listen to DVDs & CD's.
Have hundreds of each so no intention to get rid anytime soon, also have several machines and the last time I looked, DVD & CD players are still available to buy.
Yes they take up space but we have a lovely library set up in our storeroom so we can browse with ease.

TheNightingalesStarling · 07/01/2026 18:47

DD (14!) Was disappointed last week when she realised her laptop didn't have a DVD drive. The film she wanted wasn't on streaming. (And she didn't want to watch the film we were watching... also on DVD!. We think we have an old external DVD drive somewhere.

We don't really buy new ones... but why get rid of the old ones then have to pay to download?

Rollercoaster1920 · 07/01/2026 18:48

I have some DVDs. If buying now I'd get blue rays. DVD is pretty low quality (resolution, dynamic range and colour space).

ThirdBanana · 07/01/2026 18:49

I’m starting to buy replacements for the ones I gave away 🙄

ThirdBanana · 07/01/2026 18:50

…and I bought an external dvd drive for my laptop.

RedRiverShore6 · 07/01/2026 18:50

Definitely not, we have 2 DVD players and an Apple SuperDrive, I have had to buy DVDs of some series when they stop showing them on streaming channels
