Have you gone DVD free?

DH wants to...but we have loads of old e.g. BBC dramas on dvd which I do like to watch every now and again. I can't find them to buy online. One I found on Apple TV but when I clicked on it to see how much it cost, it took me to Amazon prime. Which we don't subscribe to. Is there a way of buying a film (not renting it like you do with kindle purchases) or tv series without having to subscribe to all the different steaming services? We already have Netflix.

Isn’t that on Netflix?

No, nor is The Bold Type anywhere either

Caremwluz · 07/01/2026 20:01

People are still buying DVD players - I found several shops selling them when my old one broke, and that's in a very small town.

A local charity shop still stocks a few VHS tapes. They said a few people come looking for them.

Theda13 · 07/01/2026 20:02

I have blu rays and DVDs. I’m very selective with what I buy though, so my collection is quite small. I only have my favourites.

The WiFi was down in my area for two days recently, so we were glad of my film collection then!

I love Old Hollywood movies, and they aren’t generally streamed on BBC iPlayer, Netflix and Amazon Prime etc.

My kids (aged 18 and 21) are serious film buffs and one is very into music too. They definitely want the actual DVD (blue ray for preference) and the music buff buys vinyl.

Having a physical copy of a film you love is very different from accessing it on a streaming service, and given the ages of my kids I don't think it's likely that they will be discontinued any time soon.

We still have hundreds of dvds, but we store them as just discs in sleeves in a couple of ring binder type holders, which takes up a LOT less room than keeping them all in their boxes.

If you don't mind me asking where did you get those from?
We have in the region of 500 dvds.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 07/01/2026 20:09

No, never. Never in a million years will DH and I get rid of our DVD collection... Been collecting them for 25 years... Far too many things are taken off streaming, and even if and when they're shown, they are sanitised and cut to death to appease the woke and the fragile. We have SO many things (on DVD) that aren't available any longer. 100s of films, TV shows, comedies, musicals, concerts, shows, all sorts that we would struggle to get now. And we have the originals of everything that can never be touched/censored because it's the original copy(s.)

Even my adult DC (both around 30 y.o) who used to laugh at me and DH for our 1200+ DVD collection say they get it now. They are constantly borrowing DVDs off us, as they can't get them on streaming anymore, or Amazon want £6.99 to watch it (and they can get it for us for free for a week!) AND they get the original version with no cuts or censorship.

Cat1504 · 07/01/2026 20:10

I’m 60….haven’t had a dvd for at least 10 years…got rid of them all…don’t have a dvd player…..we had loads when the kids were young…you can’t give them away now

TubeScreamer · 07/01/2026 20:16

The dvd player and dvds went about 14 years ago

MigGirl · 07/01/2026 20:20

We have actually started buying more. We tend to swap around streaming services and find that it's often cheaper to buy the DVD of film we want rather then buy/rent it on Netflix or Prime.

We also have a 3D player and TV, as when we bought it it was cheaper then buying the normal one. We don't have many films in 3D but the quality of the play back on the TV is better then cinema quality.

I've also noticed that streaming quality isn't great and if you play a DVD or blueray it looks much better. That's despite have fast broadband.

gamerchick · 07/01/2026 20:21

Absolutely not. There's no way you can trust streaming services. Stuff gets put on and off at will.

Plus, what would you fall back on if the internet is off for some reason?

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 07/01/2026 20:22

Bit short sighted to ditch them all tbh. We still have plenty stashed away, plus others I have saved on hard drives.

ResusciAnnie · 07/01/2026 20:45

God no, we’ve just reinstated the DVDs after about 20 years of streaming…. Vinyl too. Sick of everything being on an app and hope long form stuff eg actual albums, whole movies, will benefit DC’s attention spans .

notacooldad · 07/01/2026 21:08

I disagree.
When streaming services have gone down it doesn't make a difference to me.
Theres no film that I'm going to miss if I never see it again.

DrowningInThings · 07/01/2026 21:45

@Brightlittlecanary the bbc adaptation of Our Mutual Friend.
I also wanted a version of Oliver a while back as DS was studying at school, but couldn't find one.

Blimey we haven’t had a dvd player for about 15 years, can you still buy them?

rainforestalliance · 07/01/2026 22:36

Yes got rid of them when we moved last year (hadn’t used them in years)

was really hard to give them away, no charity shops take them nowadays. In the end we found a local care home who wanted dvd donations.

Yip I bought a cheapo to have on stand by £17 from Asda

Beamur · 07/01/2026 22:38

Stuff get taken down from streaming services, even shows you have purchased. I might prefer to use streamed content but I think DVD's aren't finished yet.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 07/01/2026 22:39

Oh wow. I didn’t think anyone had DVDs anymore.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 07/01/2026 22:40

My DD age 30 still has quite a few kids videotapes, mainly Disney.

40HourDays · 07/01/2026 22:42

We got rid of our dvds years ago. A relative tried to give hers to the charity shop last year and they wouldn’t take them as they said they don’t sell well.

Do you pay with your phone in shops and don't carry cash?

It's quite scary how reliant people are on the internet. It can be switched off at the touch of a button or 2 dudes.

Of course I pay on my card. Like most people do. I have cash available at home so I can pay the cleaner and window cleaner etc so I’ve always got cash available but I use my card for ease day to day. Don’t be scared for me 😂

Lightsandrainbows · 07/01/2026 22:46

Haven’t owned a dvd in well over 10 years. Much better for storage. However we’re being absolutely conned by the streamers and you don’t get any of the ‘extras’ you used to get on dvds, so if you’re big movie fans I’d keep them

Excitingnewusername · 07/01/2026 22:47

We still have a physical dvd collection, it's proved useful when the internet is playing up, and I treat our local Oxfam like a dvd rental place as they cost 49p to buy which is cheaper than renting on amazon etc, Oxfam get the cash and get the dvd back to sell again.
