Have you gone DVD free?

DH wants to...but we have loads of old e.g. BBC dramas on dvd which I do like to watch every now and again. I can't find them to buy online. One I found on Apple TV but when I clicked on it to see how much it cost, it took me to Amazon prime. Which we don't subscribe to. Is there a way of buying a film (not renting it like you do with kindle purchases) or tv series without having to subscribe to all the different steaming services? We already have Netflix.

Ive not had dvds ( or cds) for years.

CraftyNavySeal · 07/01/2026 17:28

Got rid years ago, we have Netflix but DP downloads other stuff somehow

hexsnidgett · 07/01/2026 17:29

No and I am still adding to my collection. Very glad this week after a few of my favourites have been removed from netflix.

I'm glad I've kept hold of my physical media as I hate the way ownership is passed around the streamers.

youalright · 07/01/2026 17:32

Haven't had dvds for years couldn't even sell them for 10p each on a carboot.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 07/01/2026 17:32

Don't think I've watched a DvD in about 20 years. It's a dead technology every bit as much as 8-track cartridges and Betamax tape.

Whentosayitsover · 07/01/2026 17:33

I don’t even have anything to play a dvd or cd on.

smallsilvercloud · 07/01/2026 17:34

Got rid of them all several years ago, I didn’t like them cluttering up shelves so I’m glad to be dvd free

I don’t even have anything to play a dvd or cd on.

Same.

I stopped putting DvD drives in my PC's about 20 years ago, there's just no need for them, and I'm not even sure I have a player or a games console stuck away in a cupboard any more even if I did somehow want to play one.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 07/01/2026 17:35

We had a big clearout before we moved last year and we kept box sets and other less commercial/common films but binned stuff that was always on TV or on several streaming platforms.

The ones we have left are in the loft and will be rarely watched but to be honest I wish i had kept more of them as I hate the reliance on streaming companies.

Also exactly the same with my CDs!

I have even bought some CDs and DVDs that I had previously got rid of from Cex/Ebay to replace them.

Sortalike · 07/01/2026 17:38

We have a bit of an eclectic mix of DVD'S, old classics, Christmas Films and random stuff left over from when DD was a baby.

I will never get rid of the old classics or Christmas DVD's - they are timeless (bit like our DVD player which is practically vintage 😊)

MammaWeasel · 07/01/2026 17:38

We still have hundreds of dvds, but we store them as just discs in sleeves in a couple of ring binder type holders, which takes up a LOT less room than keeping them all in their boxes.

showmethegin · 07/01/2026 17:40

We couldn’t decide what to do with our DVDs, some of them are hard to come by digitally. In the end we just put them all in an old cd wallet type thing and chucked the cases. We don’t need loads of room to store them now

Ponderingwindow · 07/01/2026 17:40

We still buy physical media. Even if you buy a digital copy of something, you don’t really own it. Services have deleted purchased books, movies, and tv shows over various issues in the past.

Since we don’t want to hassle with an actual dvd player and keeping all our media easily accessible, we have a large hard drive and just copy everything onto that. We justify that because we do own an original purchased version of the material and we only use the copy for personal use.

Pemba · 07/01/2026 17:42

You don't have to subscribe to Amazon Prime in order to buy or rent digital versions of films or TV shows. You just need an ordinary Amazon account. You can also buy them from Google Play or Apple (I thought?) and there's another site called Rataken or something, will check the name later. Orub

I’m actually going the other way. Probably going to cancel Netflix this month and stick to DVDs going forward instead, mostly preloved from charity shop/ebay. I’m uncomfortable with the direction streaming services are going (downhill!).

DaveWatts · 07/01/2026 17:45

We've actually just gone back to dvds as so fed up with the streaming services - whenever I want to watch a film it inevitably turns out to be one that's not free to stream, so you have to pay 3.99 or whatever just to watch it once - I'm better off getting them from the local charity shop for 50p and watching them as much as I want! I'm getting rid of all the subscriptions now which will save us a chunk every month.

PuppyMonkey · 07/01/2026 17:46

Interestingly, my DD who is 18 and doing filmmaking at university has become obsessed with collecting DVDs. She’s got a little mini player and TV and it’s really popular with all her friends. She’s got loads of all our old classics and buys various ones she likes from car boot sales and charity shops. She’s loves displaying her cool DVDs on the shelf and showing off. Grin

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/01/2026 17:48

I can’t remember the last time I watched a DVD. I must be missing a gene as I don’t ever watch things over and over again. Once I’ve seen something, I’ve seen it. I’m very curious about what people rewatch. And why?

ManyPigeons · 07/01/2026 17:49

Didn’t most people do that back in 2010ish? I don’t know anyone who owns DVDs.

Although now I’m tempted to get them back again to save on streaming as a PP said.

MirrorMirror1247 · 07/01/2026 17:51

I've still got quite a few, and I have a PS5 so can play them on that. Came in handy at Christmas when I wanted to watch Elf but couldn't find it on any streaming services!

Pemba · 07/01/2026 17:51

(posted too soon)
That site is called Rakuten TV. There's probably others too.

But personally I like to hang on to the dvd or Blu-ray if it's something I really love. No special features or directors commentaries when buying a digital version, and especially not from a streaming service! Plus of course the streaming service can remove content whenever they want to. Also the cost of the different subscriptions can really add up. Plus of course you are reliant on your Internet connection.

TheDandyLion · 07/01/2026 17:52

Got rid of them all about 20ish years ago.

RaininSummer · 07/01/2026 17:53

Very handy to have them if you want to watch TV and the internet has gone down. Not the end of the world but nice to have the option.

Notmyreality · 07/01/2026 17:54

Still got the collection but probably watch 1 a year on average now. Havent bought one in years. All digital now purchases now - Apple and the odd Amazon one.
