What temperature do you leave your heating on at night? When it's below zero celcius outside?

Just wondered, after a little debate beween me and a few other people yesterday.

Would you be so kind as to pick an option? (I will put what I leave it at a bit later.) Thank you. Smile

My heating is off overnight, my house is insulated and the temperature doesn’t drop low enough, even in freezing weather, for it to need to be on. It is set to switch on at 6:00 or 7:00 (weekday/ weekend) for an hour or so so that the house is warm when I get up and then it goes off again until the evening.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 04/01/2026 12:38

Mine is only "on" at night because my new boiler doesn't have an option of having the heating off completely. I have to choose a thermostat temperature for every hour of the day and night. At the times I want the heating to actually come on, the thermostat is set to 19. When I want it off/to never come on, ncluding overnight, it's set to 12.

HawthornFairy · 04/01/2026 12:38

I only have a stove in living room to heat the whole house by leaving doors open downstairs. Occasionally I leave it lit overnight but usually I don’t. When we wake up the house is generally 14-17 and in the winter I light the stove at 7am. We’re Scottish Highlands, when the wind comes off the Atlantic it is bitter but I’d never swap to central heating.

SiobahnRoy · 04/01/2026 12:39

Usually we don’t have it on overnight but last night was particularly cold, so left it on a low temp, for the dog more than anyone else 🙄🤣

Zippedydodah · 04/01/2026 12:40

Thermostat is set at 12° but I’ve never heard the heating click on, the house is well insulated.

ThirdBanana · 04/01/2026 12:41

Ours isn’t on at night, but there is a frost setting.

fluffiphlox · 04/01/2026 12:42

It goes off at 1030 and doesn’t come back on until 0730, apart from one downstairs room which has underfloor heating and that’s set permanently to 20°. We close the door on that room when we go to bed so it’s always comfortable in there in the morning.

RedRiverShore6 · 04/01/2026 12:45

15c if very cold, one year our condensate pipe froze, boiler is upstairs so not easy to thaw out, and having it coming on a bit in the night helps stop this.

Thanks for voting everyone. Seems a few people don't have it on at night then! If you don't have it on, you can pick 10 degrees C or less. (The first option.) Or if you have automatic frost protection you can pick option 1 too. (I can't add any voting options onto the poll as someone suggested... )

Anyway, according to the poll, many people do have it on at night. (When it's very cold...) 310 people have voted (so far, as of 12.15pm,) and around 70% seem to have it at 11 to 20 degrees C.

Why I asked is because 5 or 6 people me and DH have spoken to this week leave it at 23 to 26 degrees C AT NIGHT. IMO, that is a crazy temperature to leave it at overnight! The heating would be on for most of the night, we would be sweating buckets, and the heating bill would be horrendous.

I really appreciate people taking part and voting. Thank you. Smile Hope everyone has a lovely day.

Oh, we leave it at around 12-13 degrees C at night - when it's below zero C.

Many people who don't have heating turned on at night won't have voted on your poll (I didn't) or will have chosen a temp that reflects their home without heating, so poll won't be very accurate

stargirl1701 · 04/01/2026 12:48

Heating is always off overnight.

Ooodelally · 04/01/2026 12:49

Usually off but when temperatures are forecast to be 0 or below I’ll put it on, same temperature the ‘stat is always set to which is just below 20 degrees. I’d have it warmer but my dogs become uncomfortable at anything higher.

TheSmallAssassin · 04/01/2026 12:49

Our overnight temperature is set to around 11° I think, we don't touch it once the heating is on for the year, no matter how cold it gets. It's all a bit academic, as even though it got down to -3° outside, our living room (where we have the weather station console) didn't get below 16° last night.

We sleep with the window open a bit all year round, unless it's really windy.

FurForksSake · 04/01/2026 12:50

Maybe the poll should’ve been does your heating come on over night?

EndorsingPRActice · 04/01/2026 12:52

Heating is off at night but comes on automatically at 4:30am for an hour, we get up at 5am in the week and leave for work at 6am

SameShitDifferentDate · 04/01/2026 12:54

Where's the point in having the heating on overnight? Some people don't seem to have heard of duvets, electric blankets, hot water bottles...

shuggles · 04/01/2026 12:55

It's off at night. The house should be cool at night so people can sleep.

MildlyAnnoyed · 04/01/2026 12:56

I turn the heating off at night & I turn it back on in the morning. I find the noise of the pipes disturbs me when the heating goes on & off.

Liftedmeup · 04/01/2026 12:58

Heating is never on at night. It doesn’t matter how cold it is outside. But there wasn’t an option for that in the poll.

VikaOlson · 04/01/2026 12:58

RampantIvy · 04/01/2026 12:18

I'm surprised at the number of people who turn the heating on and off. Do they not have a timer to set the heating and thermostats?

When we moved in to this house, the heating system was quite new and has a timer controlled by an app.
Unfortunately I've never managed to get the app to connect to the control panel so we have to manually switch it on/off.

GentleSheep · 04/01/2026 12:58

17.5 otherwise the house gets way too cold. I've hypothyroidism so feel the cold a lot, also I tend to wake up at night and sometimes get up for awhile so don't want to sit in a freezing house!

Meadowfinch · 04/01/2026 13:00

Heating is off at night, but comes on at 6.30am in winter.

We have 13tog down duvets and pjs. No need for heating as well.

MuyPuy · 04/01/2026 13:01

Never have heating on at night. That’s an easy way to throw money away.

UnimatrixZeroOne · 04/01/2026 13:02

whataboutnow · 04/01/2026 11:19

Never have it on at night Always have the window open too!

Same here. It's bitterly fucking freezing when I get up for the loo in the night but I must have that fresh air!

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 04/01/2026 13:03

Our thermostat is set at 12 overnight but the house never gets as cold as that, old but solid, in central Scotland.
On the other hand without the heating on our static caravan is about the same temperature inside as outside, which is why we don't use it in the coldest weather!

SoapyDrama · 04/01/2026 13:03

WallaceinAnderland · 04/01/2026 12:22

Yes mine is a timer. It goes off overnight and comes on about 6.30am

Same here, I've never had the heating on overnight and never had a frozen pipe. My parents and I think my siblings are the same, can't imagine spending money to heat the house when everyone is asleep
