What temperature do you leave your heating on at night? When it's below zero celcius outside?

Just wondered, after a little debate beween me and a few other people yesterday.

Would you be so kind as to pick an option? (I will put what I leave it at a bit later.) Thank you. Smile

We never have the heating on at night. Like all modern boilers, our system has a frost protection setting that automatically kicks in at ten degrees but I have never known our flat to get that cold (we are in inner London).

vanillalattes · 05/01/2026 11:03

Turned off at night.

The majority of hotel thermostats are centrally controlled, particularly in higher end properties. The one is your room generally has a limited range and so little impact on temperatures. And of course increasingly you can’t open the windows so there’s no access to fresh air which so many of us want.

The hotels I usually stay in can you adjust the temperature by a few degrees from the thermostat and if you need a bigger change you can ask at reception.

Outside temperature is irrelevant to a thermostat setting.

I find your categories don’t match my choices very well. 14-16 at night is good to me (18-19 in the day). 11-12 would be completely unacceptable. 19-20 at night would be absurdly warm.

Agree with this 16 and heat might come on briefly at night but a couple degrees more and it would be on all night

All you turn it off people must hate your water pipes!

We have insulation that is 100mm thick in the floors and more in walls. The room temp doesn’t drop that much, is there really cause for concern with heating going off for 7 hours?

PistachioTiramisu · 05/01/2026 12:48

Never have heating on overnight and always have the window open a bit. It comes on around 6 am to warm the house before getting up.

Delatron · 05/01/2026 12:53

We don’t normally have it on at night. I run warm at night and often have the window open and don’t sleep in much!

There’s frost protection on the heating system but I think that’s around 7 degrees.

Heating comes on early - around 5.45 and usually that’s enough to get it warm for when we get up.

However today the house is struggling to warm up. Can’t get it above 16.6 in my kitchen! DS says he was freezing this morning.

So I’ve gone in and changed it for a few nights to hover around 17 just so we don’t struggle to get it up on the day.

I wonder what the reaction would be if Putin was successfully whisked away in the middle of the night to face trial?

If he insisted upon having the heating at 30 Celsius, I think half of Mumsnet would be up in arms and the other half would be calling for a Nobel Peace prize for Services to People that Feel the Cold.

Why, does he turn his heating on too high?!

Teddleshon1 · 05/01/2026 19:22

Oops - yes wrong thread 🙈

JJWT · 05/01/2026 20:48

You haven't included a response for people who allow it to turn off according to their usual timer/schedule. Ours automatically fires up if it's internal temp drops below 5⁰ so there's no need to keep it on to avoid frozen pipes etc. Are your thinking that everyone heats their house while they are upstairs in bed? Maybe they do but it has never occurred to me to do that.

FurForksSake · 05/01/2026 20:59

We have a big issue in the UK of older, less well inflated, draughty homes. The government really should spend time and money doing what they can to sort it out where they can. I’m sure there were some attempts some years ago, but it wasn’t well done and we now have improved materials and methods.

Someone asked why it mattered to anyone but them if they had their heating on full blast. 14-17% of uk carbon emissions are from homes. Increased energy demand due to heat lost from homes significantly impacts our climate change goals.

MrsAmaretto · 05/01/2026 21:06

Thermostat is set to 17 overnight apart from spare bedroom, study, playroom, dinning room and kitchen where it is set to 12 degrees. We have oil central heating and use a thermostat similar to NEST. We’ve got a windchill of -8 and snow outside currently so I’m glad I topped our oil up in November.

pilates · 05/01/2026 21:25

Heating not on at night

TiredCatLady · 05/01/2026 21:46

We leave ours constantly set to 18deg so it only kicks in to keep certain parts of the house at that temp so I guess it’s technically off. Bedroom winds up 16-17deg through the night. House is well insulated, good windows and thick curtains. We did a trial when we first moved in of the on/off smart settings (awful) vs constantly on a low-ish setting and it works out cheaper and more comfortable to have it on constantly.
I’ve had quite enough of waking up with ice on the inside of the windows and able to see my breath for one lifetime.

SockQueen · 05/01/2026 22:03

Ours switches to frost protect mode (7C) at 11pm. The house is well-insulated though, so it never drops that low in one night - it's gone down to about 14 the last two nights, then the heating turns back on at 6.30am and bumps it back up.

Missj25 · 05/01/2026 22:15

My heating system is air to water .
It’s set at 23 upstairs & downstairs at the moment cause of cold Frosty weather & on all time , it’s most efficient that way , not to turn it off.
When this particular cold spell of weather passes it will be 20 .

OP did address this, almost 36 hours ago by my calcs.

flipflop76 · 05/01/2026 22:31
