What temperature do you leave your heating on at night? When it's below zero celcius outside?

Just wondered, after a little debate beween me and a few other people yesterday.

Would you be so kind as to pick an option? (I will put what I leave it at a bit later.) Thank you. Smile

14 degrees. It rarely comes on though.

BrunchBarBandit · 04/01/2026 11:23

Our heating is on 5am-11pm (with radiators switched off in unused rooms). When the outside temp falls below about 2 degrees we have to leave it on all night otherwise the house doesn’t reheat the next day. It’s a large Victorian house, high ceilings, single-glazed dash windows, so not very energy efficient.

tinyspiny · 04/01/2026 11:23

Our thermostat is set at 15 overnight so it comes on if the temp in the house drops below this , it never comes on in the night .

Chemenger · 04/01/2026 11:25

It’s off at night. This house stays quite warm overnight. I can’t sleep in a warm room so I would rather it got cold overnight. Left to myself I would have the window open whatever the weather.

Thanks for the votes so far. Smile

Have to say though (regarding a few responses,) not having your heating on at night - when it's below zero C - is not recommended. It's important to keep it on, even if it's at a low temperature like 7 to 8 degrees C, to avoid frozen and burst pipes, that could cause a lot of costly damage.

Our boiler has frost protection so it would come on anyway in this situation.

quarrybanks · 04/01/2026 11:27

It’s not on at night, house never goes into single figures so there’s no danger of freezing pipes.

SemmaLina · 04/01/2026 11:28

Frost protection , means it would come on if the hall is less than 15°c

JanglingJessica · 04/01/2026 11:28

My house is a terrace - my neighbours keep it above pipe bursting temperatures.

I sleep with the window open whatever the outside temperature, so keep the heating off overnight.

SleafordSods · 04/01/2026 11:28

Well last night the boiler and the thermostat lost connection so it didn’t come on at all avd it was one of the best night’s sleep I’ve had in ages.

Usually I leave it on 15 degrees but might leave it on frost free tonight and see how I sleep.

pointythings · 04/01/2026 11:29

Ours isn't on at night, we have it on frost setting. Daytime it's set to 17.5, with the current cold snap it's about 12 in the morning so not too bad.

Ketryne · 04/01/2026 11:30

Ours is set to 18.5 all day but we usually boost it to 19/20 during the daytime if we’re all in. We have very young children who can’t really have hot water bottles and things, and an extremely cold old house. No heating and the kids rooms would be about 14 degrees.

However we keep their radiators on half way so it’s usually about 17 in their rooms, if the monitor cameras can be trusted . We have our bedroom radiator almost off and a window slightly open. Not the most efficient but the only way to keep them comfortable.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/01/2026 11:31

It’s been “feels like -11” here for the past few days - amber weather warnings and deep snow. The heating is set to go off at 11, but we’ve been bumping it on until we actually go to bed. It’s timed to come on 6-8 in the morning then back again at 4 but we’ve had it pretty much constant in the day as we’ve been off work. Never on overnight though, I don’t think I’d be able to breathe.

Shufflebumnessie · 04/01/2026 11:31

We don't have our heating on at night, it's too noisy!
Last night it got to -5 here so I just put an extra blanket on top of the duvet & wore fluffy socks. Sometimes a hot water bottle too.
Our heating switches on at 5.30am so has taken warmed up the bedrooms by the time we get up at 6.15am.

DoAWheelie · 04/01/2026 11:32

I get allergy flare ups if I overheat at night so I usually leave the heating off when I sleep.

However my heating system isn't that great and when it's very cold it can take 6+ hours for it to reach a comfortable temperature again when I switch it on. I have a condition that makes being cold extremely painful so I put up with the allergies during cold snaps and leave it on the day time temperature 24/7. On normal days it heats up in about 30 mins so I just stay wrapped up in bed reading each morning until I can get up pain-free.

I probably have it on overnight about 25 days a year in a few 3-4 day stretches, but need the heating from late September to the end of April usually.

Sallycinnamum · 04/01/2026 11:33

Hate having the heating on at night as it feels like I'm suffocating. Last night we even had the window open a tiny bit.

I don't think we've ever had the heating in overnight even when its snowing!

Mikart · 04/01/2026 11:34

Never on at night.

stackhead · 04/01/2026 11:34
  1. But we're up and down into youngest DDs bedroom at night and I'd freeze if we let it go any colder.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2026 11:20

I chose 10⁰C or under as my heating is off overnight. Im sure there's some frost protection thing that would kick in if the indoor temperature went super low

10 is “super” low.

Scampuss · 04/01/2026 11:35

Mine is off from 8pm to 6am, temperature drops a couple of degrees overnight but it's an old solid stone house with a lot of thermal mass. Absolutely no need to keep heating on.

skippy67 · 04/01/2026 11:35

Heating off at night. Window open. All year round

JoeBrown · 04/01/2026 11:35

Heating never on at night

Teddleshon1 · 04/01/2026 11:36

No heating at night. I have an electric blanket on for when I get into bed and sleep far far better in a warm bed in a cold room.

mummybearSW19 · 04/01/2026 11:37

At this time of year it is set 22 degrees fo a few hours morning and night. But set to frost protect the rest of the time. As DH has overridden my settings!!

(i set it to come on if it goes below 12!)

Whosthetabbynow · 04/01/2026 11:40

Never have heating on overnight. We’d boil like lobsters. Anyway, the cat on the bed is like a hot water bottle. The heat he gives out! 🥵
