What temperature do you leave your heating on at night? When it's below zero celcius outside?

Just wondered, after a little debate beween me and a few other people yesterday.

Would you be so kind as to pick an option? (I will put what I leave it at a bit later.) Thank you. Smile

I've never in my life had heating on at night. Didn't even have central heating in my first house.

You need a voting option to reflect this OP.

Heating isn't on at night I just have a fleece blanket in addition to my duvet keeps me really warm.

Manally turn heating on when I get up.

Same here. I suffer night sweats (thanks peri!) so only use a 7.5 tog duvet, topped with a blanket over my lower half. My 7yo DD has a warmer duvet with a microwavable teddy.

Thanks for voting everyone. Seems a few people don't have it on at night then! If you don't have it on, you can pick 10 degrees C or less. (The first option.) Or if you have automatic frost protection you can pick option 1 too. (I can't add any voting options onto the poll as someone suggested... )

Anyway, according to the poll, many people do have it on at night. (When it's very cold...) 310 people have voted (so far, as of 12.15pm,) and around 70% seem to have it at 11 to 20 degrees C.

Why I asked is because 5 or 6 people me and DH have spoken to this week leave it at 23 to 26 degrees C AT NIGHT. IMO, that is a crazy temperature to leave it at overnight! The heating would be on for most of the night, we would be sweating buckets, and the heating bill would be horrendous.

I really appreciate people taking part and voting. Thank you. Smile Hope everyone has a lovely day.

Oh, we leave it at around 12-13 degrees C at night - when it's below zero C.

I turn it off at night. The room temp hasn't dropped bellow 17° in my house so I see no need to have it on.

Ours is on 16 permanently (and overnight) and we turn it up to 19/20 when we’re going to be in. Do people really turn it off? What’s the benefit of this when it will have to work like mad to get back up to temperature when you want it warmer?

I turn mine off because it's never dropped below 16.9c inside even when I've been away for a week mid winter and left it off the whole time.

Functionally there is no difference between 16c and off for me. Everyone has a different living situation and what works for one house won't work for another.

I live in a ground floor flat in a 3 story block where the walls are 1 foot thick concrete so it holds in heat very well (and is soundproof!). The way I use my thermostat is very different to my previous flat in an old listed building with 14 foot ceilings and bad insulation.

Lahdedah2026 · 04/01/2026 12:18

I miss the days I could afford to keep my heating on overnight 😭

My house is an old end terrace with rubbish windows, I can spend close to £5 a day on gas and that's just during the day

GoldAndSilverBells · 04/01/2026 11:25

Thanks for the votes so far. Smile

Have to say though (regarding a few responses,) not having your heating on at night - when it's below zero C - is not recommended. It's important to keep it on, even if it's at a low temperature like 7 to 8 degrees C, to avoid frozen and burst pipes, that could cause a lot of costly damage.

My house temperature never falls below 18 at night so, even though it feels freezing getting up in the morning, feels pointless having it on overnight as house would end up too hot for sleeping.

20-21. I need to have the house warm all the time.

Ours is 20-21

We have awful windows and house is freezing otherwise

RampantIvy · 04/01/2026 12:18

I'm surprised at the number of people who turn the heating on and off. Do they not have a timer to set the heating and thermostats?

BunnyLake · 04/01/2026 12:19

Heating on at night is unbearable, I can’t sleep properly.

FurForksSake · 04/01/2026 11:58

Frost protect is for when you go on holiday in winter, not overnight. Lagging outside taps may well be necessary in some areas.

I’m thinking of lagging myself.

taxguru · 04/01/2026 12:21

It's not on at night. We have it on timer for first thing in the morning and again for late afternoon/early evening. It's off by 8pm and doesn't come on again until around 7.30.

Yes mine is a timer. It goes off overnight and comes on about 6.30am

Ditto. I hate staying in holiday lettings where the heating is on constantly with only the thermostat to change it. If we turn it down to off, it won't come on in the morning, so we try to set it low enough to be off, but high enough that it actually comes on before we wake up. Nigh on impossible. So it ends up on and off all night. It also makes the air dry, we find, causing blocked noses, dry skin, etc. Hate places like that.

shellyleppard · 04/01/2026 12:25

Heating is off overnight. Duvets and extra blankets on the beds until the heating comes on in the morning

TeaRoseTallulah · 04/01/2026 12:27

Never have heating on at night , we're in bed there's no need.

RudolphTheReindeer · 04/01/2026 12:29

Mines set at 15 but hasn't come on. I don't like it being on at night anyway.

EnchantedDays · 04/01/2026 12:30

Set to 13 which is low enough that it never comes on, it's too noisy to have on at night.

I voted 10-15 as the thermostat is set at 15 overnight, but it doesn't come on. Not sure the poll will be very accurate.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 04/01/2026 12:32

Ours is set to 5 degrees overnight so it's effectively off. Can't bear heating on over night and sleep with the window open.

TabbyMcTattle · 04/01/2026 12:33

Surely depends on how cold your house gets? Ours only drops below 18 when it's absolutely baltic, so we leave it at 18.

Bumply · 04/01/2026 12:34

I don’t have heating on overnight.

dont have a thermostat, just cooker on timer on and off during the day.

I don’t know what the temperature is overnight. Seen my office be 13° before the heating kicks off and reaches heady heights of 17-18°

It does help that I live in flat so I get some of the warmth rising from the flats beneath me.

TheKateColumbo · 04/01/2026 12:34

Ours is off but will kick in if the house goes below a certain temperature.

DarkEyedSailor · 04/01/2026 12:36

Off at night no matter what the weather is. I have the bedroom window open as well. I can't sleep in a hot or warm room.

Barleycat · 04/01/2026 12:37

Off at night. Was ice on the inside of my kitchen window this morning.
