One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

It doesn't have to be an hour. Many of these jobs are 5-10 mins. We can all find that time I think. It is just making yourself do it.

WonderingAboutThus · 05/01/2026 09:24

I'll join!

I love this thread. How calling the stuff everyone procrastinates over ‘shitty jobs’ immediately makes it feel easier to do them!

And I think 'regular' housework counts too. I'm a real procrastinator so properly clearing the kitchen after tea can be a bit of an achievement for some!

Failed on my mission to get to the tip before work this morning due to lost car keys. But parcel collected and shopping list in progress.

What are you soaking the oven shelves in? Anytime i do ours never come up well.

I use some biological washing powder, pour in boiling water and leave them overnight -then in dishwasher, then scrub off the last bits with a metal scourer.
The overnight soak is the best but I never let them get filthy.
If they are really bad you need to buy the Mr Muscle or Lakeland cleaning kit that comes with bags and an acid-y solution. Leave them overnight in the bags and then rise them (I do this outside using outside tap/hose straight down drain) then if they still have stuff, in dishwasher and remove last stubborn bits by hand.
Its a faff but worth it to get them like new - then the trick is to soak them in the washing powder /boiling water every few months so they don’t get bad again.

edit - when you use the bags leave them outside just in case they leak as the solution would damage flooring.

Monday 5 jan - today’s shitty job is taking back all the Amazon returns 😩
A mixture of Royal mail and evri so need to go to a couple of places

Might do the charity drop and tip run today too - if enough space in the car!

Wow, so do you not see him for 9 months of the year or does he come back to the UK?

I'll go back and forth. Currently trying for residency.
Him and the dog have European passports

After Christmas 2024, I took photos of our Christmas decorations in situ and got rid of all the decorations I hadn't used. Christmas 2025, I checked out the photos and put everything up in the same way. Took so much less time - and I have less stuff in the Christmas cupboard.

Lauraa7 · 05/01/2026 10:34

I’m in, since NYD I’ve painted my fence, sorted online access to my pension and organised a plumber to install an outside tap. I’ve also taken down my Christmas tree and decs, and started to use my new window cleaner on my windows.
ill need to do an hour a week for a good few weeks to do inside and out. Some windows have not been cleaned for over 10 years 😳

Hobnobswantshernameback · 05/01/2026 10:36

I'm in
I managed to declutter a couple of cupboards in my kitchen last year and the attic/eaves.
i have three more kitchen cupboards to do and my wardrobe.
Then two cupboards in my sitting room desperately need sorting and a box of photos in the loft.
I want this done before spring
there I've written it down

Op as you say you aren’t good at this stuff you are doing so well .

i am behind with everything due to my health for the last few months so everything is a monumental task and then I end up having to rest in bed. Really frustrating.

today I realised some of the Christmas stuff I sorted yesterday to go in loft , my things, weren’t put in the loft but shoved back on some shelves. Very disappointing as I can’t get in loft to do it. Whilst discovering this I sorted out the drawers in the lounge masses of paperwork now in the bin and my diary and monthly budget all organised I keep cash in the house to try to stick to a budget but it’s time consuming). Got it all nice and went to have a sit down in there and then had a blazing row with my OH….we aren’t getting on well at the moment and he currently sleeps in the lounge (his choice) saying the lounge now counts as his room.

We are only in a 3bed semi and one bed is his office (he also has the garage so he has two areas already), downstairs a tiny kitchen a small second reception ( was originally the dining room) where the pets sleep and the lounge so no idea where I’m supposed to now live and eat. I assume that means I’m now supposed to be living, sleeping and dining in the master bedroom.

in one weekend he’s said and done that, not put my things in the loft but told me he did, lost some of my other hobby things and even worse changed the password for the Wi-Fi so I couldn’t go online, control the heating and hot water or watch the tv. I’ve had enough of this year already and it’s only the 5th :(((( No incentive to do anything tomorrow now. :((((

the shifty job I need to do is somehow get him to leave but I own my half of the house so no idea what I’m supposed to do.

You know you're being abused because you're vulnerable. Start a thread for advice.

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 05/01/2026 11:02

I was up at 5am as DP going to airport so I did my sj for the day and went through the next shelf in the pantry-spreads (peanut butter etc). Washed the jars, chucked a few away, bit the manky tops through the dishwasher and wiped out away.

i now have space 😁

only took 5 mins but it’s another one done.

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 05/01/2026 11:04

how long until there’s a mis type and some one types ‘done my bj for the day, only took a few mins but at least it’s done’.
😁😁😂

WhatICallMyUsername · 05/01/2026 11:13

Thanks to this thread I have started a drawer a day sorting out two units of 12 drawers in total that just seems an impossible task! If I feel like it I might do a second drawer some days but I must do at least one! Then onto the next shitty job 🤣

TidyupNowplease · 05/01/2026 11:13

I’m in, I have so many things to sort out that I just keep putting off. My whole house needs to be redecorated and every room could do with a really good deep clean/sort out. I just always put it off to tomorrow or next week and then it never gets done.

GrannyOog · 05/01/2026 11:22

sounds a great idea. I’ve taken the decorations down. Sorted out teenagers wardrobe, cleared out old toys and games. Going to sort out drawers in sideboard next.

LunaDeBallona · 05/01/2026 12:06

I’ve half taken down outside decs
Ive cleaned oven -shelves will be soaked tonight.
I’ve repotted amaryllis

I’ve decided to re start doing The Organised Mum so I’ll be doing the sitting room today.
Mini sort of garage will have to wait though as I haven’t done any ironing since before Christmas and the ironing pile fell over about 30 mins ago when I added my bedding I washed yesterday. It’s like ironing jenga - when the pile is too big l need to do it.
So I’m going in - I maybe sometime.

BookWorm7 · 05/01/2026 12:06

This sounds like a great incentive to do a little and often. I am bad for clutter and was trying to do the 'don't put it down, put it away' thing but hasn't really worked for me.

I got my son's room sorted yesterday and his new LED neon light thing up on the wall that he got for Christmas and hoovered and dusted his room. I find it a lot easier to be tidier when the kid's are at their dad's as my mental bandwidth hasn't been taken up by constant chattering😆

I will be sorting the Christmas present clutter in my living room when I get home from work.

Ehupflower · 05/01/2026 12:27

Great idea! I’m going to start with under the stairs!

NotherdrinkAnge · 05/01/2026 12:29

Count me in. One bag of items for charity moved to car boot

ShittyJobCrew · 05/01/2026 12:33

This thread has really motivated me!

I’m at home with the toddler before work begins again tomorrow - poor child has mainly just helped me sort but seems to have enjoyed!

Today I have

  • taken the tree out and cleaned up all the mess
  • rearranged the lounge and deep cleaned the floor and skirting boards
  • done multiple washes of throws etc (not just the normal washing, I’ve done that too)
  • organised a bathroom drawer
  • organised and added to my ‘donate’ pile of bits and bobs
  • sorted some paperwork
  • cleaned out 2 handbags

Going to stop shortly and actually do some child related activities but I’m really motivated! And my mum has been a legend and is happy to do the donating/recycling of all the bits, so hopefully my dad will pick up 4 bags for life tomorrow and they will be gone! (I appreciate I’m very lucky for her to do this as it halves the jobs - she doesn’t work and loves being ruthless and sorting things out so always perversely quite enjoys herself I think. Safe to say she doesn’t need to join this thread!)

CharlotteRumpling · 05/01/2026 13:07

Cleaned the cruddy inside of microwave.
That's it but it's such a beautiful day I want to finish work early and go for a walk.

Pr1mr0se · 05/01/2026 14:10

Shittyyear2025 · 03/01/2026 05:50

Wow, what a response!

Today is Christmas tree down day. I have 2 trees and 2 sets of decs but only put one up this year - had a good sort out of the other decs before Xmas so that particular corner of the loft I can forget about for another year. Need to dig out the Christmas cards I bought in the sale and put them together TODAY rather than keep them on the landing 'to go in the attic' at some point.

Also going to paint the door a second coat and hunt out the hinges so it can be rehung tomorrow.

Finally, my lounge light has been wonky for years and I ordered a new fitting last week. If it arrives I'm going to put it up.

Three shitty jobs in one day, hopefully!

If you've managed three jobs in one day, does that mean you get three days off or is that asking for trouble this early into the year?

Sitoff · 05/01/2026 14:16

Cleared the shelves in the utility cupboard, sorted the contents and replaced the usable items.
Cleared the coats and shoes from the hallway and washed down the inside of the front door and scuffs off the skirting boards for the first time in years.

Ruthietuthie · 05/01/2026 15:39

Good progress this morning.
The junk haulers are coming this afternoon to clear all the rubbish from my basement. Once the basement is clear, I can order my new washing machine! A nasty job done for a good price! I need to clear a path before they arrive, but it will be great to have this done.
I also cleared all the decor off the front step - dead chrysanthemum plants and moldy pumpkins.
