One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

There’s just two of us living in the house, yet in the porch we have about 20 coats hung on hooks! Which were starting to obstruct getting through inner door. So…. I have gone through all coats today. Found three I forgot I had from last winter and a long lost former favourite scarf stuffed down the arm of a coat sleeve and a random very nice Fat Face coat which belongs to neither of us! Now have just four coats hung neatly on hooks, and the porch looks twice as big! Going to tackle the shoe cupboard tomorrow…..

I'll be following with interest but realistically I'm going to be a mess until I get to try ADHD medication in a few months. 🙈

I have however taken the Christmas tree and decs down and vacuumed. Sent an email that I've been avoiding for 2 months and ordered a shower caddy organiser thing that I've been meaning to get for a few months too. So that's something!

I think the shitty jobs are those jobs that won't really affect anyone if they're not done but the home looks or feels better when they are. So laundry/grocery shopping/kitchen cleaning/cooking is essential but say cleaning a window, a bit of dusting, returning a parcel or library book or touching up a bit of paint isn't. Which is why they get left (for me anyway).

My shitty job for tomorrow is to take out the Christmas flowers and clean out the vase they are in (before they all go mouldy) quick one as I am working all day. I have another to add to my done list for today after my shower I cleaned out the toothbrush holder pot, it was very much overdue 🤢 .

Agree with your definition of shitty job.

as well as one sj a day, I clean one room a day (weekday). So the house is never gleaming all at once but it’s all relatively clean and one room (dusting/polishing, tidying) is manageable and means it’s done properly (including putting toothbrush holder through dishwasher when it’s the bathroom’s turn!).

BrendaSmall · 04/01/2026 23:02

Too be honest with you I really don’t have much to do as I keep on top of everything, tomorrow though it’s my day to strip our bed and the spare bed, remake with fresh bedding and wash dry n iron n put away what I’ve taken off when done , also has I’ve worked the last 3 days, I’ve got 3 days if clothes to wash and also 3 days of towels to wash as I’ve not washed anything for 3 days!

SoUncertain · 04/01/2026 09:44

Great thread! I've been reading everyone's posts to inspire my own list. I'll add that I have done some jobs for the past three days, so not behind!
1st - deweeded garden with DD
2nd - took down main Christmas tree and living room bits
3rd - decluttered DD's outgrown clothes

Today we need to take down DD's tree.

I have lots of repairs and repainting to do, a tonne of decluttering, hanging pictures, tip and charity shop runs, getting rid of old car, organising, finally making some photo albums, and so in and so on! I'm sure I can fill a year! 😅

Got DD's tree down, and even partially decluttered her room at the same time. Then I tidied the office ready for back to work tomorrow and decluttered loads of old Christmas craft leftovers that have been unceremoniously kicking about in a bag for life for the past couple of years. YESSSS!

I do think being at home more is key to this. Usually we go out for quite a lot of the weekend, but this past week we have spent more time at home and got loads of bits and bobs done. If only every week was as lazy as twixmas!

LunaDeBallona · 04/01/2026 23:51

Can I join the Shitty (job)Team please?
Ive been doing it on my own -now I’ve found you I’ll be inspired to carry on.
Ive taken down and packed away all Xmas decs AND I have sorted them all out so ‘stuff’ I had in boxes but never used for years has been charity shop sorted/binned. I do need to pack all boxes away in Christmas Cupboard but that’s a shitty job for another day.
I’ve unpacked and re packed freezer.
Ive (tonight) emptied two big wardrobe shelves and now have a lot of (mainly DH) clothes for charity and tomorrow night I can re sort other side as I’ve gor a whole big shelf free now!

Tomorrow morning im taking down outside decorations and starting oven clean,
Ill put shelves in big Lakeland tray soaking in washing powder & boiling water overnight so they will be sparkling tomorrow.

Tuesday I’m going to do mini sort and rummage in garage & look for paint.

Wish me luck!!

TheRuffleandthePearl · 05/01/2026 00:33

Just found this thread. I’m in. Away to think of what small SJ I can do tomorrow (well today as it’s after midnight) between work meetings (WFH self employed)

Ruthietuthie · 05/01/2026 00:41

I am eager to join in with this.
Yesterday, the tree fell down, so that meant I also took decorations down. I wouldn't have usually done this until the 6th, but here we are. Today I REALLY cleaned the living room. We have cleaners, but I haven't been happy with how clean the house was for a while. I finally used the steam cleaner (that I had bought probably five years ago and never used) and really got the skirting boards clean.
I am combining deep cleaning/shitty jobs and decluttering. If I can do something each day, well, I think I can learn to love the house again. It already felt so good to go into the front room and just breathe in the cleanness.
My main task for the coming week is the basement. Full of junk and dust, plus probably some old mouse droppings. It is truly disgusting. And the washing machine, which is down there, just broke. I can't order a new washing machine until I have a clear path for the workers to bring it in and take the old one out. I don't want to tackle the basement, but the washing machine breaking has forced my hand. I don't go back to work until the last week of January, so I have time.

OneNewEagle · 05/01/2026 00:42

Op as you say you aren’t good at this stuff you are doing so well .

i am behind with everything due to my health for the last few months so everything is a monumental task and then I end up having to rest in bed. Really frustrating.

today I realised some of the Christmas stuff I sorted yesterday to go in loft , my things, weren’t put in the loft but shoved back on some shelves. Very disappointing as I can’t get in loft to do it. Whilst discovering this I sorted out the drawers in the lounge masses of paperwork now in the bin and my diary and monthly budget all organised I keep cash in the house to try to stick to a budget but it’s time consuming). Got it all nice and went to have a sit down in there and then had a blazing row with my OH….we aren’t getting on well at the moment and he currently sleeps in the lounge (his choice) saying the lounge now counts as his room.

We are only in a 3bed semi and one bed is his office (he also has the garage so he has two areas already), downstairs a tiny kitchen a small second reception ( was originally the dining room) where the pets sleep and the lounge so no idea where I’m supposed to now live and eat. I assume that means I’m now supposed to be living, sleeping and dining in the master bedroom.

in one weekend he’s said and done that, not put my things in the loft but told me he did, lost some of my other hobby things and even worse changed the password for the Wi-Fi so I couldn’t go online, control the heating and hot water or watch the tv. I’ve had enough of this year already and it’s only the 5th :(((( No incentive to do anything tomorrow now. :((((

the shifty job I need to do is somehow get him to leave but I own my half of the house so no idea what I’m supposed to do.

OneNewEagle · 05/01/2026 00:46

Sorry rant over. I’d just like to be getting on with my sj’s in peace without OH being an utter arse.

I want to know whose coat that is now!

ginislife · 05/01/2026 03:42

3rd & 4th, paid off my Next & PayPal accounts in full, paid my tax bill - following in from mortgage discussion on 2nd, daughter pulled everything out of the corner of the living room that had ended up a dumping ground and we sorted it out, tidied up the front room - mainly newspapers , cancelled a couple of subscriptions, will cancel a couple more today - phone call needed in business hours, washed & dried new towels I’d ordered. Sounds a lot when written down but none took long. I’m a terrible procrastinator.

Friendlygingercat · 05/01/2026 04:37

I have a policy that if a task does not bring me money or satisfaction or pleasure I dont do it. Otherwise how will it profit me?

Try oven Bright - it's one of the only branded cleaning products I use. Comes with giant bags to put the shelves and trays on - leave overnight and the grot is gone by morning.

VecnasSkinnyLatte · 05/01/2026 05:34

I’m also committing to this!
Bought a hand held motorised scrubber thing with different attachments. I’m tackling the boring grime one bit at a time.
Tidied 3 kitchen drawers just while waiting for things to cook in the oven.
Housework is so tedious so I need to challenge myself, as I’d rather be reading a book !

Sadworld23 · 05/01/2026 05:37

I'll join, I have mountains of crap to sort.
Kids clothes to donate, kitchen cupboards to clean..

I might not manage an hour a day but any progress would be good.

Can anyone direct me to finding a way to store packets, eg noodles and crisps in a high kitchen cupboard without it all falling out when I open the cupboard.

Yes I've used this and would recommend it too.

I think that type of control over wifi counts as abuse but I'm not sure what you would do about it. Perhaps a new thread needed.

I use these types of containers - you can often get them in B&M and stores like that, in different sizes.

I’m in! Love that a shitty job can both be life admin and declutterring. My to-do list is endless

beigeybeige · 05/01/2026 08:03

I’m really good at avoiding my to do list in my phone, so hopefully this thread will help. SJ Misery loves company!

Songlines · 05/01/2026 08:20

I've got a couple of tricky phone calls to make that I've been putting off. That's top of my SJ list for today

IsThisIt2021 · 05/01/2026 08:24

I’m in. Since the start of the year I’ve sorted out the eldests DCs bedroom. Moved a lot of the crap they’ve previously wanted to keep but never used. Will get around to donating and binning a lot of this.

Bought them new cube units which have fitted nicely in their cupboards. Meaning I can get rid of their old 8 and 6 cube ones.

Dismantled their bunk beds, hoovered the carpet and cleaned the boards whilst it was all empty. Then I painted a wall in there that’s needed it for a year, since we had a massive condensation issue in there.

Today I need to build their new beds. I guess this isn’t classed as a SJ as they do now need them, so essential. But it’s still a SJ so wish me luck.
