One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

EleventyMillion more to go..

lightningstrikes · 05/01/2026 15:48

I'm in. Today I cleaned and waterproofed my hiking boots and the kids shoes and cleared out shoes no longer in use. Tomorrow after work I'm going to the post office to post some returns and drop the charity bags.

I like this thread 😊...

Bit the bullet on doing a tax return for 2025.

Had all the paper work dumped in a kitchen cabinet, amongst other paper work.

Organised it and uploaded things to revenue. Took about 2 hours but done with it.

defrosting and sieving the blackberries picked in the late summer to make an apple and blackberry crumble

Witchymadwoman · 05/01/2026 16:42

Finished taking down the Christmas decorations - still need to get the tree outside and chopped up, plus boxes into the loft. 3/10 for me 😕.

SemmaLina · 05/01/2026 16:54

I sorted out blanket box at bottom of bed , it’s meant to keep swimsuits and summer holiday gear , but it also seems to have acquired all the bags that parcel get delivered in , because they might be useful , bags all now in one bag and on top shelf in wardrobe ( a job for another day )

Dressing table top decluttered , dusted and the corn dolly horseshoe from wedding day over 30 years ago given a wash and some new ribbon ( adds buy appropriate ribbon to list for another day

Bottom of standard lamp cleaned

Cooker hood cleaned

I sorted all the big cardboard boxes for recycling and I very nearly went to the tip until I remembered it’s recycling day on Weds so saved myself the effort.
I did ‘poo patrol’ in the back garden thinking I would be in luck because all poo would be frozen, however it was also all covered in ice so I couldn’t find a single one! 💩

I have sorted a lot of stuff for the loft but I’ve not put it up yet. I always miss things so I am waiting a couple more days to catch everything.

Idontthinkicandothisanymore · 05/01/2026 17:47

Going to sort the cupboard under the stairs while dinner is cooking. It’s all my shoes and the ironing board:mop bucket type shite
bought 3 pairs of boots online so need to make space for them.

justasking111 · 05/01/2026 18:16

Tackled one long kitchen window sill. DH has built up so much crap on it in two months while I've been getting over a surgery. I found rotting fruit, a bag of rotting chillies, dried up satsumas, lemons, lots of paperwork. He opens his post while eating breakfast. Secateurs??!! Empty egg box in the egg bowl. Garlic bulbs rolling around. Couple of dozen empty takeaway plastic containers.

Then on top of the microwave, empty jam jars, GU pots (all teetering dangerously)

Sill now clean, ditto, fruit bowl and egg bowl.

Left the overflow on the kitchen island. He's binned it 🙈

I'll do the other window tomorrow.

Our understairs cupboard I dread tackling.

Just sorted out 4 old and stained wipe clean tablecloths for a local lady who runs art classes and sorted the booze cupboard out and got rid of 3 out of date bottles of mulled wine. I don't even like mulled wine!!! Also offered 3 bottles of wine as raffle prizes for a quiz I am going to at the end of the month.

Have bailed on driving a ten mile round trip to return a pair of jeans I don't like though. It's far too cold for that shenanigans! Will have to be another day before the next storm hits on Thursday.

I am liking this thread. Even though I am naturally organised and tidy I am still finding all your wins motivating. Can we keep this thread going?

RedFatball · 05/01/2026 18:42

Cleaned a windowsill that probably hadn't been touched for 5 years. And washed the net curtain that went with it as it was a disgusting grey colour. That room is the last one we need to decorate after moving in 16 years ago so I am feeling good about doing the Shitty Jobs to prepare to empty it

It doesn't just need decorating to be honest, the skirting boards and carpets need doing as well. And we need new windows if I'm honest but that is going to have to wait a bit longer...

I also managed to get a GP appointment but not for 2 weeks. They made it super clear I would have to be at deaths door to get something sooner...

SJ's being lined up

clear shoe rack
tupperware cupboard
craft cupboard from when kids were little (currently ages 13 to 18...)
The Corner Of Doom, although this one is a weekend job due to working full time.

Probably enough for now!

caramac04 · 05/01/2026 18:54

I took down the Christmas tree which then involved cleaning the corner it had been in. That led to vacuuming and cleaning all the corners, under the sofa and bees waxing coffee table and lamp tables.

Mamalicious72 · 05/01/2026 19:31

Yesterday I finished unpacking my books. Today I took excess rubbish to the tip. Tomorrow I'll update my new address where I havent got round to it.

Suboptimummy · 05/01/2026 19:50

I was very tired today - so doing the post office parcel trip feels like a win

BuddhaAtSea · 05/01/2026 20:01

My shitty job of the day: I took the tree down and packed any trace of Christmas away. Left the candles though, they’re nice.
Yesterday I did one shitty job, at work, been putting it off since the 1st.

hottentot · 05/01/2026 20:02

My shitty job today- work 😂

Day 1 down 🎉

Shittyyear2025 · 05/01/2026 20:20

Failed at the first hurdle today, didn't get to the tip before work due to lost car keys, though did collect Boots parcel that had to be done today otherwise was being returned. Struggled through work (kind of a shitty job but good to see folk after the hols).
Have finally ordered a part to fix the toilet. Now to sort the kitchen out after tea and an early night.

Tomorrow is WFH day so I can use the commute time productively.

FindingMeno · 05/01/2026 20:22

Oh what a good thread.
Today I sorted out the mugs and hot drinks cupboard and moved the shelf, so the coffee etc is no longer at the top where I can barely reach. Instead the extra mugs are up there making it harder for anyone to reach up for an extra mug rather than washing out the one they've been using.
Win win for future me, I hope.

Ruthietuthie · 05/01/2026 20:22

The men are working in my basement at this very minute, dragging out years of rubbish. With this cleared, I can start work on the smaller jobs (moving tons of cleaning products from the floor to the shelves that I can now access). And then get it clean enough for a new washing machine to be delivered.

Specialagentblond · 05/01/2026 20:27

My shitty job today was a job that I was afraid to tackle at work. But I did it and it went really well.

Shitty job for the week is to finish tax return.
and to take my returns and Vinted parcels to various locations.

keep eating them frogs everyone!

Ruthietuthie · 05/01/2026 20:37

@Lauraa7, you have been so productive. I am in exactly the same position - some things not properly cleaned since we moved in eight years ago.
I agree that something every day, and ideally an hour of cleaning/shitty jobs a day and our homes will be transformed.
I am still enjoying how nice and clean my living room feels and smells, after I got the steam cleaner out yesterday and cleaned EVERYTHING.

MooFroo · 05/01/2026 10:05

Monday 5 jan - today’s shitty job is taking back all the Amazon returns 😩
A mixture of Royal mail and evri so need to go to a couple of places

Might do the charity drop and tip run today too - if enough space in the car!

I’d love to do this but we are completely snowed in, live rurally in north Scotland and the drifts on our track are several feet high now.

TheRuffleandthePearl · 05/01/2026 21:03

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 05/01/2026 11:04

how long until there’s a mis type and some one types ‘done my bj for the day, only took a few mins but at least it’s done’.
😁😁😂

Hahahaha likely to be me with my terrible typing

TheRuffleandthePearl · 05/01/2026 21:13

DH and I sorted the Futility room shelves, some stuff to go back to garage where it belongs, got rid of some junk, and rearranged what’s on the worktop so it’s easier to make coffee in the fancy machine. It all looks cleaner and neater now, and I’m looking forward to morning coffee tomorrow!
