One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

I do the big tumble dryer filter under the tap or with the hose outside . Probably not as often as it should be though. Mine has a message come up "empty container" or "clean filer"

I need to go through the spices too , They're in a box on the fridge .I know a couple need replacing .

Two carpets are being cleaned on Thursday so this morning I pulled out all the furniture in the bedroom vacuumed behind it. Also under the bed. All the skirtings and edges done. Will do the sitting room tomorrow.

WindyW · 04/02/2026 05:00

Two bags declutterred to the charity shop and a return done 👍

CherryRipe1 · 04/02/2026 10:02

Sold a couple more things on eBay so that's decluttered a bit more. Sanded all the filling on the spare room skirting but now have to get some paint stripper to remove some ancient gloss paint as white spirit & detail sander not removing it. Marked out where the hearth tiles will go with spacers etc ready for adhesive and grouting.

Been a total shit show since Monday. Could get a n electrician so no internet or telly! I almost had to talk to dh! Then had to pull out shelves and bookcases to reach plugs. Thankfully it was something our previous idiot sparky didn't do rather than needing rewiring. So today moved all the furniture from one side of dds room to another so builder can get in. Oh and accompanied dog to groomers because shes a nightmare alone.Im now knackered. Tomorrow is a washout with appointments and classes. So I can have a rest

So you know that thing where life just fucks you up for a few weeks...? Feel like I've been on that slippery spiral again but time to renew and get back to the task.

Back on it today. After 3 years and a new back door, there is no gap between the kitchen cabinets and the panel. Saved a fortune as the kitchen company offered a fantastic solution, and it was a reasonably simple DIY job. Just got to seal it now, but this can be added to the seal worktops job. Will rummage in the shed later.

Tonight I'm going to take photos of stuff for eBay/FB marketplace/Freecycle-type and actually list them. Big cardboard boxes in the car to take to the tip en route to work tomorrow. Kitchen tidy and floor mop tonight after tea.

I cleaned four pairs of muddy boots and shoes today. Also cleaned the bottoms of my slippers.

Yesterday I took down our Christmas tree. That was an absolute pig of a job.

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 05/02/2026 09:39

Yesterday was all desk-based but I did get loads of financial stuff sorted. I sold a property before Christmas so harassed my accountant to get the CGT sorted as we're coming up to the deadline and she's been unusually useless of late. Also booked an appt with my IFA, moved funds around/opened new accounts to get better interest in the interim, started scoping what to do with the investment longer term.

Well done to those who have finally got suitcases away! Mine are still taking up room in my office. I'm in that zone where I have a zillion admin tasks which must take precedence over practical things like cleaning and tidying, so I'm getting frustrated with stuff being in the physical way but no time to sort it. Hoping to get to it over the weekend.

SassyGreyEagle · 05/02/2026 13:55

Finally sorted out all my paperwork.

My next job is to give the shower a deep clean. I ordered a rechargeable scrubbing brush, so hopefully this will make it easier.

justasking111 · 05/02/2026 16:00

My cleaner came this morning to clean the carpets in two rooms. We'd thoroughly vacuumed them twice. Emptied out furniture. Wow what a difference. So much dog and cat hair came out.

I polished loads of silver which was very tarnished.

The paperwork is a mega-shitty job and I hereby give you a voucher that allows you not to do a shitty job for the next week.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 05/02/2026 16:04

About five years ago, I bought the materials for a sewing project. Last year I started it and it went wrong. I've just spent two hours unpicking it all so that I can start from scratch again.

The shitty job that you put off for years is so nice when it's done.

EducatingArti · 06/02/2026 13:00

Feeling very low here but slowly ticking off mundane admin tasks!

The weather doesn't help

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 06/02/2026 13:47

Builder been today sorting rotten floorboards from slow leak in bathroom. So washed kitchen floor. Should go and clean bathroom but it means taking my shoes off to clean in shower (big walk ins are great, but only way to clean is barefoot) and its too fecking cold.

I've also had a really difficult week with 2 major things that have caused emotional upset

CherryRipe1 · 06/02/2026 17:41

Walked to DIY shop for paint stripper and masking tape, masked the fireplace off ready to paint. Found a whole new can of paint stripper in the shed whilst looking for the paint and brushes. Now got to go back and get a refund on the paint stripper or buy something else. Just missed the deluges. Might do a bit more repair work on the cast iron fireplace or might just drink tea and scroll rubbishy reels.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/02/2026 21:47

Cleaned the windowsill in the kitchen and scrubbed the wall round about it . (It was manky ) I've sprayed the window but it'll need to wait till daylight to clean it properly .

DH and I went to Costco , not a SJ but the M25 isn't a laugh in the pouring rain !
I got him to push the trolley ( I drive ) so he'll be wincing about his "poor back/poor knees" tomorrow . They do get heavy though the Costco trolleys are wonderfully steerable .

Finally got round to cleaning my slatted blinds horrible job and takes bloody ages!

I feel your pain. I just did my bathroom ones and they took forever, and some are now a bit bent from how I was wiping them. It's a job that's so much worse the longer you leave it, but too much faff to do regularly.

3flyingducksarrive · 07/02/2026 02:03

Rotting thing is vanquished, never found it but the room is usable again. Not getting much else accomplished, it's too hot!

You must be so relieved ! But will the not knowing what it was not drive you just a little bit barmy ?

SJ - last night after smugly cleaning the kitchen windowsill was a quite literal SJ . One of the lovely cats had left a scraped on, dumped out poo on the stairs . Thank you Male or Female Cat whoever it was . (They're keeping Schtum )

Cleaned the hall carpet with the help of DS , I did the shampoo bits then he took over with the boring back/forth sucking up the water bit while I vacuumed upstairs .

lbnblbnb · 07/02/2026 17:02

Found this thread after the instagram woman who started this mentioned the thread. I really need some motivation.
Started small - found my leather punch and made new holes in my belt (have lost a lot of weight, second time I have had to add holes).

Dug up the weird bag things with internal microfibre loops like a mop I bought ages ago and put my Ugg slippers in the wash with baby shampoo. Fingers crossed I haven’t ruined them.
Going to start a shitty job list in the back of my diary.

Oh bless your cat! they knew that particular piece of carpet needed extra attention.

It's driving my DH with ASD insane not knowing what the rotter was but I don't fucking care, am over the whole thing.

WindyW · 08/02/2026 06:48

A few yesterday:

Sorted the kids Pokémon cards, which was extremely tedious.
Ordered a room divider curtain for when we are having our floors fitted (yippee).
Prepped for paining until I ran out of masking tape.

CherryRipe1 · 08/02/2026 12:33

Took back the surplus to requirements paint stripper to the DIY shop & got a refund. Repaired a bit more of the cast iron fireplace. Partner painted the fire surround which is a real SJ so quite grateful. It's going to need 3 coats to look good. Tore up & recycled some excess cardboard boxes I've been hoarding for online sales. Ive got a ridiculous amount dominating & cluttering the shed now so will advertise for free on local SM or gradually get rid via recycling.
