One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

I did a job today that I have been putting off for so long- putting the photos in albums! They went back to Feb 2022! I remember that last year I started to do it and the dog knocked the whole pile on the floor so first I had to put then all in order, then put them into the albums. The reason it’s such a crap job is because the size of the photos don’t fit nicely into the albums I have, annoyingly. So this time I cut the pictures smaller and made collage type pages instead, they look really good. I can now go in free prints and order the next batch.

Dry day for first time in what seems forever and i have sorted the pile in the garden into the skip / recycling / donations as appropriate. And discovered the builder has been adding to the pile ... He is going to get some coaching tomorrow on walking a small distance further to the skip and not getting me to do it. For the amount I am paying I don't want to be doing his job!

lbnblbnb · 09/02/2026 21:32

Today’s SJ: sorted out my mound of washing, put it away, ironed and did some mending. Also sent four emails that I have been putting off.

SqueakyDinosaur · 10/02/2026 09:05

I did one of my most SJs yesterday - I moved the bed and bedside cabinets to clean the purple dustbunnies off the carpet, walls, skirting boards, furniture etc, turned and remade the mattress. The bed frame is heavy and wooden, the mattress weighs a ton, and because it's such a SJ, I hardly ever do it.

Crucible · 10/02/2026 17:16

Absolutely huge SJ began today, deep cleaning our main bedroom. I have to finish it tomorrow as it's been hours and I think my hoover is going to explode. It's the job where you go behind all the furniture and pictures to dust (our furniture is very heavy) and I've hoovered so many dust bunnies and cleaned the windows inside. It's awkward as well as dull. Not even finished, tomorrow I will continue with a damp cloth and a ladder to get up on the wardrobe. My god it is long overdue. Looks ten times better and my back is hurting so badly.

TicTac80 · 14/02/2026 12:45

After some weeks of needing to pull myself out of a total funk....I have done a couple of SJ's today. Phew!!

  1. I've pulled out furniture in sitting room and cleaned all behind it. Reason for this is twofold: main reason was to have a hunt for my bloody Shokz headphones (they're the bone conduction ones, so not cheap!), and bonus reason is to get some cleaning done. I've still not found the damned headphones, but I'll keep hunting (and pulling stuff out/cleaning behind it as a bonus), as I KNOW that if I fork out for some more, I'll then find the old ones. They've been lost a few weeks so I can't hunt them down with a "find my lost tech" app.
  2. stripped beds and remade them. Not a true SJ as such as it's a routine job, but not one that I like doing. And I make the DC help me out with this.
throwawayusernamefornow · 14/02/2026 15:37

Does it count if I’ve written down lots of SJs to do next week (half term?!). Not done any of them yet but writing them in a list means I can hold myself accountable this time next week ?!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 14/02/2026 17:17

I've just cleared out the freezer. I had to wait until I'd eaten some of the stuff in there but there's now nearly a whole drawer empty, which is a good thing because Waitrose are delivering this evening.

Anyway, I'm feeling smug about this, or I will once the frostbite has healed.

IMO clearing out the freezer is one of the shittest jobs around.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 14/02/2026 17:20

Crucible · 04/02/2026 17:40

I cleaned four pairs of muddy boots and shoes today. Also cleaned the bottoms of my slippers.

Yesterday I took down our Christmas tree. That was an absolute pig of a job.

#Protip: shove slippers in washing machine. If they're not machine washable, bin the buggers and buy some that are.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/02/2026 17:27

We have two small chest freezers in the garage , one needs defrosting but it's a game of Freezer Jenga to empty one .
Managed to clear some space in the freezer in the house (by eating some half empty packets yesterday) .
Today as it was dry but cold we (DH and I) did some gardening , just tidying up , it is too early for anything major but weeded some areas and cut back brambles . That is a totally SJ , hate the things but best get them hacked back before they become triffids ,

Washing , did our bed . Tomorrow will be DDs and DSs (half price electricity and they both have brushed cotton bedding )

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 14/02/2026 17:47

@Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride I have the same issue with my shower, have to get in it to clean it, and as it's big there is masses of backboarding to clean. Mind you, the one it replaced was a standard cubicle half the size, and I used to complain that it was so small I bruised my elbows trying to clean that one, so clearly I'm never happy 😀

@CherryRipe1 Same here re: hoarding of cardboard boxes for online sales. I virtually never use them and every time it's recycling bin day I think "I must go rip those bloody cardboard boxes up" but never get on with it on time so they live to clutter the shed another fortnight day...

Have been neglecting the thread but got some SJs done. Paid my accountant twice for both CGT and self-assessment and my CGT bill, am furious at the latter and consider it one of the S of SJ tasks (I wouldn't mind if the govt used it for the NHS/education/SN provision/any other worthy or decent thing, I'm actually in favour of tax and spend, but it's the fact it goes to tax breaks for millionaires that drives me insane...)

Ploughed through a mountain of ironing and spent at least 24 hours with zero ironing pile which was a rare thrill. Put a reminder in to renew my garden waste subscription the day before as the Local Authority aren't getting my money until the last minute (you may sense a running theme of indignation here...😀)

I also switched energy provider. I've had a reminder in my organiser to do that for aaaages and I'm annoyed with myself at having put it off as I've wasted money there. I used to price it up and switch annually, as I do with insurance etc, but when the fuel crisis happened and MSE told everyone to just stick with their standard provider as there was nothing better out there it dropped off my radar to keep checking I was on the best deal. I'm pleased to have sorted that - I'm going to be up a tenner a month (would have been double that but just as energy comes down by £20 pcm water goes up by £10 pcm...more grrr...) Better than nothing.

DD13 has cleared tons more stuff out of her room, and DS18 has begun a practice of spending 20 mins in the loft every day sorting all their old toys into bin bags by theme. The plan is then when we have a bin bag full of Postman Pat/Peppa Pig etc to stick it on Vinted/FB Marketplace etc as a bundle.

@ChocolateCinderToffee ha! I would do but I particularly love my slippers. They're so comfy I have three pairs. Problem is I keep forgetting I'm wearing them and taking my dogs for short walks on my road wearing them. So I wipe the soles to stop trekking any yuk through the house. I practically live in them..😵‍💫😁

Crucible · 14/02/2026 22:06

I washed them once and ruined a pair!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 14/02/2026 22:14

Tomorrow I have to mop the kitchen floor, do the ironing and start thinking about cleaning the oven.

In fact, I ought to clean the oven before I mop the floor.

Woe.

it counts as a SJ because you have to list all the SJs you need to do lol.

My SJ tomorrow is to wrap all the sold items for Ebay and get them posted out.

throwawayusernamefornow · 16/02/2026 11:09

Just hoovered & cleaned skirting boards behind bed (yuck!!)
also sorted through my wardrobe.

Feeling smug but have lots more to do this half term!!

blubberball · 16/02/2026 16:18

I cleaned out the car today. Not perfect, but much better than it was

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/02/2026 18:21

I did another SJ today, I took down a metal bunk bed frame, took it to the tip, then moved a doubled frame from one bedroom into another, so now our spare room is empty and ds has a cool new bed. It’s a bit messy upstairs but I am off work all week so I didn’t push myself when I got to the horrible ‘moving piles around’ stage and just came downstairs and watched some tv, will resume activities tomorrow!

Undercovers · 16/02/2026 23:10

SJ of the day was paying for all sorts of car related admin.

3flyingducksarrive · 17/02/2026 02:37

SJ is processing a metric fuckton of invoices so I can be reimbursed. Then another attempt at creating some order in my ASD son's computer room. Ugh.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/02/2026 12:39

Still haven't mopped the kitchen floor or cleaned the oven but I HAVE cleaned the conservatory, a foul job because of the spiders, bits of kibble and litter tray spillage. Anyway, it's done.

Shittyyear2025 · 19/02/2026 09:12

Finally got round to getting some of the stuff down from the loft that came from my mum's 4 years ago.

Mixture of sentiment and joy but my kids don't want to be decluttering my shit when I go, never mind my mum's shit. Got 15 things on eBay yesterday and made £55 overnight, so yay!

Cleaned & mopped up after the plumber. Behind our close couple toilet was disgusting due to an accumulation of dust etc over the years. Put all the bathroom accoutrements back & slung out some hoarded junk & nick nacks. A tin of fruit cocktail had blown out at the bottom in a kitchen cabinet and leaked onto all the other tins making them rusty & left a black gunky residue everywhere . Threw them out as decided they could be contaminated & scrubbed the cabinet shelf.
Did a load of admin & now trying to psyche myself up to stick some tiles down then grout them. It's only 5 for the hearth & seems hardly worth getting a tiler in as they're generally pricey but I'm wary of messing it up. Going to have to bite the bullet & go for it.

Jellycatspyjamas · 19/02/2026 11:47

My house is one shitty job after another at the moment because we’re having a lot of work done on the house. Each piece of work seems to create one shitty job after another. So today I’ve cleared miscellaneous crap from the kitchen where it had been moved when swapping two bedrooms round, including decorating and carpeting. I’m now sorting out my home office and finding space for a shit tonne of crafting stuff. My office will be a work space and somewhere for me to hide from the kids while doing crochet or stitching. Just need to get it organised.

CherryRipe1 · 19/02/2026 18:35

Layed 5 tiles out, mixed the adhesive and stuck them down with the spacers in between. I'm glad to get it finally done after all the trepidation & though it's only a small job it was fiddly, but I'm chuffed now. Grout & edging tomorrow.
