One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

This week we had a new washing machine so have done the ultimate of all the SJs which is clean under where the old machine sat. We also moved a fridge to fit it in, which is equally shitty

this weekend i absolutely have to clean my house, it’s grim. I’ve been up for redundancy and the whole of Jan has been a total write off. I have a week off in Feb so I am starting to plan my jobs for that week, and a lot of them are shitty and will involve a big skip

Finally got round to cleaning my slatted blinds horrible job and takes bloody ages!

EducatingArti · 29/01/2026 23:08

Today I took the car to the tyre place to sort out the tyre that very slowly loses pressure all the time,
I've also started on taking down the Christmas decorations.
( Yes I know, but I wasn't ready to take them down on 12 night so I decided to be medieval and wait until Candlemas!)

A very shitty job on Wednesday when I cleared out my mother’s nursing home room the same day as her death. I left a lot of things for the nursing home clothing bank/charity shop connection, and have washed everything I brought home. I’ve also sorted her photo albums into piles for each of us siblings depending on who she made them about, and did quite a lot of financial admin.

Someone else did an SJ for us by taking a big piece of metal that we didn’t want, they were delighted. I also paid someone to take a load to the tip for us. Wonderful. I love a skip @thenewaveragebear1983 but we didn’t quite have enough to justify it yet.

I've just cleaned the inside of a kitchen cupboard, tidied it up, thrown out old condiments/herbs/spices, and made room for tea stuff that was on the windowsill 😊 All the kitchen cupboards need a damn good sort out so I'm aiming at 1 a day now to keep myself motivated and not overwhelmed.

Yesterday a couple of stiff door locks got WD40d.

LesLavandes · 30/01/2026 13:03

Got the suitcases finally unpacked and put away. Hurrah

PermanentTemporary · 30/01/2026 13:06

Love a sorted cupboard @Redflagsabounded

CharlotteRumpling · 30/01/2026 13:12

Been doing v poorly but sorted a kitchen drawer and found a blender I was missing.

fixingmylife · 30/01/2026 13:33

I have just cleaned the cooker hood which was well overdue. It was quite satisfying.

EducatingArti · 30/01/2026 14:07

Reiterated to the flat management company that I wanted to take my complaint to stage 2 of the complaints procedure.

SqueakyDinosaur · 30/01/2026 14:23

Paid my personal tax AND verified my identity with Companies House! Hurrah!

CherryRipe1 · 30/01/2026 14:30

Picked up tile adhesive comb and spacers today. Yesterday I lugged home a huge bag of tile adhesive from our local DIY shed. Lucky I took a trolley, but I just didn't envisage how large and heavy it would be. Paid for the carpet and fitting today. Feeling a bit grotty like I'm coming down with something so that's it for SJs today. Might stick a wash on if I can be bothered.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 31/01/2026 21:08

Yesterday I did two SJs: cleaned the fridge out and cleared out a black hole of a cupboard full of boxes of stuff that were overflowing. Rationalised the boxes, swapped the contents of two of them for a better fit, actually managed to get my shredder back into this cupboard where it belongs but hasn't been for about two year. Feel I could move mountains now. The coming week's SJs are cleaning the big oven, clearing out the understairs hall cupboard, which is full of utter crap, and disinfecting the bird feeders so the poor little buggers don't get nasty fungal infections. This is particularly revolting because there are bits of dried calciworm in one of them.

That's a megashit job!

EducatingArti · 31/01/2026 21:22

I've taken down the Christmas Decorations. I left them up till Candlemas. They are all over the living room, but they are down!

justasking111 · 31/01/2026 21:22

Finally went through the bathroom and medicine cabinet. Threw out a pile of out of date eye drops. I've a six month supply of gabapentin. 🙈. I won't need that for a while. Got plenty of painkillers I discovered.

I've got left over drugs from my last operation. But they're operating again in a month so I've tucked those away.

I found a brand new hairspray I'd forgotten about. Have thrown out other bits and bobs.

DH got a coffee pod machine for Xmas. His boxes of pods were driving me mad. Cleaner said buy a pod stand. I've ordered two which arrived tonight. I shall be arranging those neatly tomorrow.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/01/2026 23:44

Took the glass panels out of the oven doors and cleaned them.

Remembered to buy petrol on Friday so I didn't need to do it over the weekend or on the way to work on Monday .

Did some garden tidy up , mainly cutting branches which is my favourite garden job as it's therapeutic and instant results .

Tomorrow is doing all the bedding as we have Half Price Electricity which galvanises me to get it done

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/02/2026 00:07

De-scaling the kettle now , I bought some proper descaler packs .
I'll rinse and sort it before I go up to bed so it's ok for coffee

3flyingducksarrive · 01/02/2026 01:03

Still haven't found rotting dead but there was ANOTHER ONE downstairs that Dh finally found and buried. Poor dead poss, I am wondering if we have a snake that is too small to swallow a whole possum?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/02/2026 06:21

I'm sorry for your loss @PermanentTemporary

I'm still reading along, but not remembering to post my SJs! I did manage to phone Thames Water last week. That's been on my list for a while. I've also ordered some more basket/box things for the shelves in my wardrobe, so will be organising the shelves when they are delivered.I used my oven cleaning sponge thing previously mentioned, but it didn't really do anything 🤷🏻‍♀️ so will book an oven clean at some point.

I managed to drop the thermostat/heating controller last night, and it doesn't seem to be working now, so will have to call the heating engineer company I use. Very annoying!

PermanentTemporary · 01/02/2026 08:04

Your SJs are much more visceral @3flyingducksarrive - amazing that you haven’t found it yet Sad I remember having a dead fox under a house where I was living in the first floor flat, it was a horrific smell.

We have some new SJs because one of our cats has decided to start using any area of cloth in our room as her litter tray. We used to keep spare bedding under the bed - we now need to wash and iron ALL of it and find a new storage space out of the way. The vet says she might be anxious. So are we, whenever we see her crouch…

user1471538283 · 01/02/2026 09:39

You are all doing so well!

I'm going backwards now that the kitchen has been delivered, so that's in the garage. But still ... A new kitchen!

After a couple of days of eating out and doing anything but SJs I've got to clean and do all the laundry.

WindyW · 01/02/2026 13:37

So many SJs this week! Fixed a puncture, replaced dripping tap, found out mice had eaten the dishwasher cable through to the live wires 😱 replaced that. Filled and painted two rooms.

Also swapped to a new phone meaning I had eleventy billion two-factor authentications and troubleshooting / setup to do! Arghhh

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 02/02/2026 11:00

Visitors gone home so back on schedule. And my oh my what a load of pj's to do. Builder coming Thursday so have to move half of shelves and shite from dds room. But, because why should anything be simple, the fuses in the lounge keep tripping so have to check all the sockets which are all behind bookcases and big heavy furniture. And I know dh will have at least one go at me for all my craft stuff. Ugh ugh ugh. I like to choose my sj's not have them thrust on.me.

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 03/02/2026 10:13

I've been away from home for 10 days so didn't get anything done other than remote admin over that period but I'm back to it now with a vengeance 😀

Yesterday cleaned the tumble dryer filter - not the lint one which I empty after every cycle but the large wet condenser one at the bottom. I don't know why I never seem to get on with that as it's never as bad a task as I imagine in the build up...but I only do it when I notice the machine performance is reduced. It's now a lot better and I'm resolved to do it more regularly - it's supposed to be done monthly according to the internet <hollow laughter>

I vaguely cleared out some aged spices and condiments from my kidney bean cupboard but that needs more concentrated attention...

Did 79 loads of washing (as per usual, slight exaggeration but not much...)

I'm going to try and get one less palatable job done per day alongside the constant battle of clearing/sorting/tidying/eBaying/Vinteding/managing the life of SN son. Today it might be the turn of the French windows, the internal frame of which really needs cleaning...
