One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

A piece of metalwork that has been in the garden for two years has suddenly attracted interest from a neighbour. If they want to take it I’ll be delighted.

Houseguests. Lovely having them but the SJ list now has 'oil bedroom doors' added ... The bathroom door, on the other hand, stayed silent - but bloody hell the light pull makes a racket when it clicks on/off.

Oh you’ve just reminded me that I want a new light pull! Might be today’s SJ.

Cleaned the shelf by the front door , went through a load of tat that was hiding there and cleaned the shelf , replaced what I was keeping and threw out the rest .
Receipts to shred , pack of tissues to my handbag , pair of gloves that I don;t know who they belong to .
Small SJ but done

WonderingAboutThus · 25/01/2026 21:22

I feel like I have done dozens of SJ's this weekend but really they are all just normal jobs that become shit because the house is under renovation. And the toilet broke. While the second one is disconnected because... renovations.

Ugh.

Had a bad cold all week so pretty poor effort. I did this morning break up cardboard boxes and put them in the recycling sack for the bin men.

Then thought buggrit and went out for lunch with DH.Country pub, roaring fire. Just the ticket.

We built an ikea unit and stacked all our towels and bathroom extras in it nicely. They were previously in a large messy pile in the bathroom. I hate doing flat packs so definitely an SJ for me.

Collected FB furniture and reorganised the kids’ rooms. Three boxes gone (only 4 remaining now from our move). Sorted out two blocked air bricks.

Cleaned the limescale off the draining board and carried on fixing a cast iron fireplace. W.I.P. & so far so good but waiting for some mesh to be delivered to strengthen the back of repairs and form the base & form for some missing chunks. Fixed my expensive puffer jacket that had a couple of tears in it with small patches. Stuck down some loose edging on a couple of kitchen cabinets with 2 part adhesive and a upvcwindow ledge end that daughter had pulled off. I seem to be in fix-it mode today but these fiddly little jobs take time and preparation.

So far today has been one of those Meh, can't get on with much days, but I have taken a large box of stuff out to the car to take to the chazza on Wednesday.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/01/2026 17:52

Two carrier bags of clothes to recycling

I have two things to go to the Charity Shop , DS can take them tomorrow

Descaled the kettle - I only had white vinegar so I gave it a try , worked pretty well

Got DS to clean the car ( just the paintwork , it is cold so I didn't make him stand outside for long )

I discovered , purely by accident how to take the glass out of the oven doors . It has a double layer and gets marked in between the glass . That will be my exciting Friday sorted then Grin

I’m feeling lacking in enthusiasm for any more SJs…any advice/motivation?

Yes, if one of your SJ is to take the car to get a new battery fitted because it is very close to not starting every morning, then take it in. I didn't and now the bastard thing is dead as a doornail and I need to get an emergency battery fitted rather than do it at my convenience.

Remember that comedian who said they want the warning lights on their car to say 'fix now for £100 or fix later for £350'.

Ive got dd and bf staying, so sjs are overtaken by cooking and entertaining. First one when they have gone is digging a patio to bury my lazy arse husband under.

I emptied one of the storage boxes cluttering my bedroom floor, have a pair of boots for the charity shop and another that I will wear to work tomorrow to see if I like them. If not, to the charity shop with them. I now have a box on the landing in which I can put unwanted things straightaway and it will go to the charity shop as soon as it is full.

EducatingArti · 27/01/2026 14:01

Today I have:
Passed 3 chairs on to someone on Olio
Sent an email to the management company of my flats asking for my complaint to be moved to stage 2 of their procedures.
Paid two bills
Spent 30 mins in my office sorting stuff and putting some stuff away, chucking stuff and putting some in a chazza bag.

justasking111 · 27/01/2026 14:36

I've wrapped four birthday presents. I hate wrapping. Done loads of filing. Have so much paper and rubbish to recycle or dispose of. Went into the kitchen for lunch. Gosh DH has left a right mess. I'll do that later.

CherryRipe1 · 27/01/2026 17:59

Renovating our spare room has turned into one SJ after another. I keep finding more things to do! Today; sanded down the fire surround some more as it felt rough and cleaned with white spirit. Filled the gaps in the skirtings where they don't meet, with wood filler (Victorian pine), one will need layers of filler to hide a big gap, then need to rub it down, clean the skirtings and probably wax. Rehung a mirror. Spotted some gaps in the fire surround where it joins the wall and floor. Ordered tile adhesive to lay the hearth tiles. Also spotted another old floorboard that needs repairing with wood glue. I'm exhausted now and in pain so will drink tea and relax.

I cleaned the dining room chairs today 😀

I know what you mean even though noisy light fittings remind me of the house I grew up in. The landing light still had the 50s switch and went ' clong' and the bathroom cord went 'click clack' 😀

Denim4ever · 27/01/2026 22:47

Continued my rethink of cupboard and pantry storage. Used lovely dish that belonged to my late parents and will store it in the cupboard I sorted out when I needed to move it for the full fibre broadband installation recently.

Prepped the books DS identified for charity shop and moved stuff from his room that I'd placed there. He's at uni and I've vowed it must only be a temporary dumping ground.

Continued 'eat from the freezer January' by making hearty winter meals for this damp and unlovely week weather wise. Made enough for extra portions that DS can take back after next visit home.

I’ll join. I have little incentive but…. For example, I’ve been home from holiday for 2 weeks and the suitcase, is still partly full on living room floor…

After seeing a programme where holiday luggage can contain, bed bugs, cockroach eggs, other creepy crawlies I was freaked out enough to always empty case, wash everything. Scrubbing suitcases. 😁

Moved the old unit into the living room and unpacked 4 more boxes 🎉. Not quite finished but super happy with the progress!
