One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Have made a start on cleaning and organising the utility room. Sorted through and washed the many coats for my little dog, will be donating some.but cant bear to part with some coats that belonged to my dog who passed away. Cleared out and reorganised the cuttlery drawer

Haven't been on on a while but trying to keep it up, DS helped me do part of his room, big bag of books and stuffed animals for charity or to try to sell. Got rid of 4 bags of charity stuff today, plus binned things that have been broken for ages, and donated some sensory toys for his school...did my bathroom last week too.
Determined to try to declutter as much as possible over the next year as need to put the house on the market and it is so full of stuff.

This weekends SJ will be tidy up the small bedroom where everything gets dumped .
I have spare bedding in bags in a high shelf , I went through them before Christmas and we're all clinging to our winter bedding for now .
DS needs to tidy his wardrobe.
And there's clothes on a rail , including some of DD trousers that I need to take in at the waist . Most of the clothes need put away .

Reeking stench continues. DH and his SW spent 3 hours replicating what took me 30 minutes and found nothing on Tuesday.

Today they are cutting holes in the wall, just as I told them they needed to do on Tuesday. God I hope we find something, anything...

Another cupboard done now completely empty and some bits taken to charity shop. Cleaned out 5 drawers, the small oven on the range and did the everyday housework

QuiltyAsCharged · 22/01/2026 15:51

Today's SJs:
✔️Hemmed a pair of curtains I've been putting off for months
✔️Set up a new lamp and bedside table in the spare room
✔️ Framed two paintings being given as gifts next month
✔️Taken recycling out

Also done normal cooking and housework but am never sure where the line is between that and SJs!

EducatingArti · 22/01/2026 16:39

Today I have emptied the box containing 48 loo rolls and found storage space for them in the cupboard. I'm also exhausted so giving myself some grace until tomorrow before I do much more!

CherryRipe1 · 22/01/2026 18:44

Went to the carpet shop to choose a new carpet for the spare room. Shop closed as the owner out fitting a carpet! Bashed the old hearth tiles out, samples arrived and they're full sized tiles & looks gorgeous. Will order them tomorrow & get some adhesive and grout. Need to sweep up the debris and chisel out any old adhesive left behind.

WindyW · 22/01/2026 22:45

Made a big list of house jobs and started it. So much more to do, it feels overwhelming but made a start.

SassyGreyEagle · 23/01/2026 11:26

I have sorted out three drawers of paperwork this week. I bought an expandable file folder and put any relevant paperwork in there and threw out all the old stuff. It was going back to 2020, so that must be the last time I sorted it 😀

I also went on to my pension app and changed to online documents, so that reduces some paperwork in the future.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/01/2026 16:34

Small bag of things to the Charity Shop .
I have some of DS things and a couple of mine that I'll drop off tomorrow and a carrier bag of clothes that is Recycling

One of the garage freezers needs defrosted , I think it has a drain which will be easier , need to juggle things about , into the other freezer .

Doing the small bedroom in stages , I have re-organised toilet paper , some of DS clothes and vacuumed .

Today has been an emotionally draining day ( I'm processing stuff via therapy and had a session yesterday that released some intense feelings) so I'm not sure I've done any SJs unless talking with my sister on the phone counts. ( They can be quite intense and hard work at times!)

However, I have a little wall shelf in my hall that has all sorts of very small objects on it that have sentimental value to me. I've taken everything off , dusted the shelves and cleaned each item and put them back. It looks great now. It's actually not exactly a SJ because it was quite enjoyable but it something that I haven't done for a long time and have not been getting round to!

This morning I attempted to hang some stained glass hanging things I got for my birthday but realised they wouldn't work where I wanted which was frustrating. I need to decide where I do want them to go and hang them next week.

This afternoon after work I have cleaned out the washing machine drawer with vinegar, I also managed to fix the brush cleaner thing I bought from Aldi last year. I had put one of the interchangeable heads on the wrong way round and couldn't remove it. I had shoved it on a shelf out of the way for like 8 months, so I'm taking that as a 'shitty job' sorted. I then used it to clean inside the washing machine. I will also be using it in the bathroom next week on the grout.

SJ today drive to hospital to collect medication for MRI (im claustrophonic) that will take a lot of time up as its not particularly close to home. Tommorrow will probably clear another kitchen cupboard,.i only have 5 left to do

ShittyJobCrew · 24/01/2026 13:11

I’m a bit behind, but today I’ve gone through my clothes after some weight loss, and have a big pile for loft (in case I have another baby) and charity shop. I can actually see what I’ve got now, and a lot of the clothes go back 10 years or so, so even if I now fit in them I don’t want to wear them.

I hope this means I wear more of my wardrobe, rather than choosing a jumper and jeans on repeat.

I’ve got other jobs I’ve been putting off, probably need to go back to my SJ list and actually prioritise. But if I’d wanted to do them, I don’t think they’d count as a SJ!

I’ve caught up with a bit of admin but also need to do some other bits. It never ends!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/01/2026 14:21

Cleaned the porch floor and sorted out some Things In Boxes . (mainly car related )
Cleaned the door with one of those eraser blocks ( getting off scuffs ) and the pesky corners ,

EducatingArti · 24/01/2026 15:09

So, I signed up to a minimalist/decluttering course and today I did this week's exercise which in part involved going into each room and quickly grabbing anything I really didn't want in my home any more.
I've done that but needing a breather before sorting into rubbish, recycling/ charity etc

Soontobe60 · 24/01/2026 15:54

Today I have excelled myself!
My kitchen sink was a bit smelly so decided to deep clean it. I took out the plug hole bit, where the removable plug fits, bleached inside the drain to within an inch of its life, scrubbed all the gunk out and refitted everything.

Utterly medal-worthy SJ, @Soontobe60 !

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/01/2026 18:40

I have the shower curtain in the wash after dyeing my hair - it was looking a bit manky at the edge before the hair dye got there .

Tyres inflated

Finished a tub of ice-cream (purely in the interest of freeing up freezer space )

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/01/2026 18:53

I took my vinted pile to a big clothes swishing event and swapped them for a pair of jeans and a vintage navy blue Laura Ashley wool coat. So technically that’s one of my SJ as I was going to have to list it all 🤣

I also ordered a washing machine. I didn’t dither- big machine, decent brand, delivered Tuesday take the old one away 👍

ChocolateCinderToffee · 24/01/2026 19:20

AyeKarumba · 18/01/2026 22:30

Oh god I need to do both of these SJs!!

I didn't do either, however I spent a couple of hours on the phone to officialdom sorting out national insurance contributions so to be honest, I think I deserve a medal. I've been putting that off for about seven years.

CherryRipe1 · 24/01/2026 19:23

Started fixing my broken cast iron fireplace with a specialist bonding adhesive filler/putty, looks great so far, it's like magic! Looked at SJ list & couldn't be bothered to do anything else so went out to see my daughter and new baby Grandson.

WindyW · 24/01/2026 20:38

Filling done, furniture pickups arranged 👍

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/01/2026 23:34

Cleaned the sink in the downstairs loo , scrubbed round the tap and plughole with a thin bristled brush and poked about with one of those skinny flexible bottle brush thingies that fit through the holes . No blockage but just to clear the build up .
