One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

I found nothing so unfortunately DH is right and the dead rotten thing is in the walls.

Oh dear. But isn’t there a decent probability that it’ll eventually desiccate & stop whiffing?

3flyingducksarrive · 19/01/2026 08:04

Yes according to google it could be a few days or a few weeks. It's started to creep into the bathroom and into my room so tomorrow DH and his support worker will be opening up the wall to see what they can find.

I think it's bigger than a gecko. Dead geckos stink but this is a huge reeeking stink.

CleanSkin · 19/01/2026 08:38

@3flyingducksarrive Good luck - I want to know the success story but not any gory bits on the way!

I intend to avoid all the gory bits!

Are you in QLD? Could it be a bearded dragon?

3flyingducksarrive · 19/01/2026 10:56

Yes, Qld. We very occasionally have bearded dragons and have had blue tongues in the past. Whatever carked it has crawled inside a second storey so I'd be surprised if it were one of them. It's most likely a possum, we have a family of those downstairs and in the roof.

Tara220 · 19/01/2026 12:49

SJ for today 4 kitchen drawers, 3 cupboards and sink deep cleaned and de cluttered and bed hoovered thoroughly

CharlotteRumpling · 19/01/2026 15:42

Got some electrical fittings replaced. Such a dull and expensive endeavour.

Removing a dead bearded dragon is really an SJ.

space99 · 19/01/2026 16:08

Yuck to looking for dead creatures!
My SJ for today but was first coat of gloss on 3 doors and the door frames. Will do window ledge tomorrow.
Keep up the SJ all.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/01/2026 19:50

Took a pile of board games and bag of clothes to the charity shop this morning 👍

CleanSkin · 19/01/2026 22:45

Still haven’t looked under DD’s bed!

(Does having a Mystery Tub of Leftovers from the far recess of the chest freezer count as a SJ?
I thought it might be, but it was actually Mac & cheese & spinach & green beans, so with a bit of sweetcorn it turned out to be delicious!)

ShittyJobCrew · 19/01/2026 23:10

Minimal in last few days- more admin type jobs - which I’m finding much less satisfying as you can’t ’see’ them as much. But my husband pointed out the house SJs were an elaborate procrastination from those and he has a point.

Sent a load of emails I was avoiding on Friday, didn’t get a chance over the weekend as had long weekend shifts. Very tired today but sent some paperwork through, and organised another part of my sisters hen (vineyard tour woohoo).

I actually sat and relaxed this evening! Without feeling the weight of the jobs on top of me. It’s so annoying when my husband is right.

space99 · 20/01/2026 15:32

Did second coat gloss of the doors and painted window ledge also. Procrastinating sorting out a pension transfer form and also getting house insurance quotes.

EducatingArti · 20/01/2026 16:32

SJ yesterday was getting an eye test and choosing new glasses and getting them fitted.
I have chronic fatigue and spending this long in an opticians in the shopping centre drastically reducing my will to go on living, plus the decisions about exactly which kind of varifocal I need, plus the expense!

Today's SJs were taking out all the paper and card recycling and arranging to move money from one bank account to another! I'm also starting to focus on how to do a huge declutter!

Yikes, we had a possum family in our loft (single storey). As a Pom I had no idea what it was, scared the hell out of me until I was put right. They make such a racket thundering about, cute though. Awww I never saw a blue tongue sadly. Hope you find the little stinker☺️

Shittyyear2025 · 20/01/2026 20:56

Had a bad couple of days but have made some small wins.

Booked opticians appointment.
Called the GP to chase up blood tests, turns out the hospital didn't order them yet. Grrr.
Bought new office chair, had it delivered and built it up.

Sorted some paperwork for my volunteer work.

Going to have a go at the room of doom for a bit before bed. Really need to make a big dint in it this week.

Small jobs here or just keeping this week and next as I am working overtime again. I don't think there has ever been so many people with annual leave in January.

Today I cleaned the glass on the oven door with cooker cleaning paste. It not perfect but looks a lot better. I have also emptied one of the washing baskets and washed as dried duvet covers.

Undercovers · 20/01/2026 22:07

Admin task today that I've been meaning to do for weeks, phew!

TicTac80 · 20/01/2026 22:26

Well done all :)

I ran some errands today, did a quick tidy of the garden, cleaned the fridge (luckily not bad as I do this frequently) and sorted some admin. Not much but it’s a day off between my shifts and I’m tired!

CleanSkin · 20/01/2026 22:45

Framed a couple pictures and moved others around to accommodate them; pleased with the result.

Took some of the foul things from the back of the fridge & disposed of them responsibly. Not quite gone as far as cleaning the veg drawers but it’s on the list!
(Still haven’t looked under DDs bed though)

WindyW · 20/01/2026 23:13

Researched and ordered loads of stuff for the house, making the most of the Jan sales.

Missingducks · 21/01/2026 09:14

Resigned from / left a group I really didn't enjoy and had no idea how I had ended up there. It was clogging up my to do list and I resented it and felt obliged to keep doing it despite moaning. Rewarded self with cookie dough ice-cream and new emptier to do list.

EducatingArti · 21/01/2026 13:27

A bit of a busy day today but my one SJ was to go to the post office to send a document with signed for delivery!

space99 · 21/01/2026 14:56

Finally sorted my pension and insurance quotes I have been putting off. And tidied the Tupperware cupboard which was overflowing. Can’t bring myself to add oven clean onto my sj list but it is severely overdue.
