One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Spent yesterday SJing mostly on the phone to royal mail and the hospital, chasing a lost parcel (RM wait time 1hr) and trying to get a hospital appointment cancellation as my annual Feb check up was put back to mid 2027! Managed to get a cancellation for early Sept 26 ringing the department directly as the appointments line was "computer says nah", so that was a bit of a win. RM complaint pending with a 3 day resolution policy. Will try to do some physical SJs today, more decluttering and general tidying up. Waiting for the spare/guest room to be finished painting so I can get the carpet fitter round & put the stored vintage bedroom furniture in it to fill up with my eBay crap thus clearing the lounge of the indoor maze feature.

SJ for today was dropping off a big box of stuff to the chazza, plus donating all my Christmas shower gel etc to the food bank. ( Liquid skin was tends to make my skin dry and itchy and I prefer proper soap so I know it will just sit around for ages, I'll try it once and then won't use it again. Far better for someone else to benefit!)

LunaDeBallona · 14/01/2026 17:33

I’ve now done 15 shitty jobs,
Yesterday I did a very vile one - took hob extractor apart and put bits through dishwasher, de greased immovable bits and replaced filter.
I am very proud of myself.
Tomorrow I shall be cleaning my baking oven door before I go out with friend.
Today I had off -went to pictures with DD to see the Housemaid.
Keep going ladies!

CleanSkin · 14/01/2026 17:49

@LunaDeBallona Wow! 🙌

SqueakyDinosaur · 14/01/2026 17:57

My SJs yesterday were clearing out the Drawer of Horrors in the kitchen (mostly charger cables but also bag clips, debobbler and random other stuff), and ditto the side of the spare room wardrobe that is theoretically for guests to be able to hang things. Well, not just theoretically now!

EllyMcBelly · 14/01/2026 17:59

I love this idea. I’m struggling to do much of anything beyond the necessary and I know I’m in a vicious cycle
I’m in!

Shittyyear2025 · 14/01/2026 18:25

Cleaned the oven door and scraped out the crusty bits in the bottom of the oven. It's a looping way from needing a full clean (and I do t actually mind cleaning the oven) but it kinda looks better now the glass is super clean.

Just heading out for the usual mum taxi stuff. Gonna give the kitchen worktops a proper clear up when I get back. I think they call that a reset...

Bin day tomorrow. Sending a child round with a bin bag and getting some big 'been hanging about for a couple of weeks' bits in there to make a start on clearing the decks.

Yesterday was putting flat pack book cases together with dh (then digging the dh sized hole under the patio). 30 years ago i could whack up.a Billy alone in 20 minutes. It took two hours for two of us to put up one 4 foot case. Our knees are fucked, backs knackered and we had two full on rows. And i was doing a 24 hour blood pressure monitor. So ever half hour my arm was crushed and I had to stop. So today's sj was writing (for the third time) the account of the crash (some twat reversed into us) we had before Christmas. Im feeling rough as fuck from lack of sleep last night and I think a bug.
Tomorrow (if I can) bookcase 2 and the culling of the cookbooks.

CleanSkin · 14/01/2026 18:54

@Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride you are a hero, doing all of those SJs.

sammylady37 · 14/01/2026 19:31

Can I join?!
Today’s SJ was getting one suitcase and one bag of unidentified crap down from the attic. The suitcase will be given to a friend, and the bag of unidentified crap has gone in the bin. It has been up there at least ten years, I’ve no idea what’s in it so whatever it is, I don’t need it. No point even looking, as that will make me waver.

Edited to say the suitcase is actually empty, not also full of crap. But it’s an old soft shell one that I no longer use, and my friend wants it, so she’s welcome to it.

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 14/01/2026 19:47

None of the things I've done today are gross jobs like cleaning dirty ovens or dishwashers but they're nonetheless SJs to me, mainly as they are the sort of irritating things I never get on with and which just plague me mentally...

Listed office chair for sale locally & got DS18 to help me lug it down into the porch. It's a really good quality one and comfortable to sit on but really heavy, cumbersome and takes up tons of space. I always disliked it - just want a normal chair for my desk now. Office now looks huge (porch now back to being cluttered 😄)

Re-hung a couple of curtains where the end hook had become detached, it wasn't terribly noticeable in either case as was in a corner but I couldn't stop seeing it

Vacuumed my bedroom. I admit I don't vacuum my bedroom as often as I should, for some reason I always think it won't make that much difference visually and then I do it and it makes a massive difference and I resolve to do it more often and then don't

Got a bit of basic filing done, and steam mopped kitchen & porch floor. Offered an item for a bit of a giveaway price to a woman on Vinted who had shown interest. It's objectively worth more but it's not the sort of thing that would find many interested parties and takes up a lot of space so I'll take a hit to get shot of it (very unlike me as I'm usually a demon saleswoman on Vinted/eBay etc but needs must if I am going to get this house cleared!)

hottentot · 14/01/2026 19:51

Hoovered the lounge and puffed up the pillows😊

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/01/2026 20:10

I vacuum the bedroom carpet every Friday and marvel at How Much Cat is in there ( fur not actual cats )
Then the landing , the hall ( that needs done every 2/3 days ) and the stairs .
This weekends SJ is get the shampoo-er out and clean then get DS to go over it with the George 3-in-1 suction. . The George is a shampoo-er too but I prefer the upright though it doesn't do such a good job of sucking the water back up as the George does .
DH unclogged the filters so I;m hoping it's working now .

Urgh I’ve found out I’m up for redundancy so my shitty job is going to have to be sorting out my cv and applying for jobs, it’s the worst SJ ever. So boring. Thankless. Every application has to be slightly different, or a cv, or a word limit. Plus alongside this I have to do the actual job that I’m having to beg for.

jenny38 · 14/01/2026 21:08

In in. Cleaned part of the shower doors at the bottom that we’re looking manky.

Commiserations. Recently made redundant here and am going through SJ job searches and applications and - fortunately - interview preparation. It sucks.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/01/2026 21:49

@Darkeryes it’s horrible isnt it? There are 2 suitable roles at my current place that I will apply for but I will also need to apply outside. Good luck with your search and applications.

PermanentTemporary · 14/01/2026 21:55

I’m an SJ lightweight but have today done half the SJ that has been looking at me for over a week - the pile of paperwork that I put on the floor so that I’d have to do it sooner. I’ve only sorted, thrown away and filed half the pile but I still feel better for it. Unfortunately quite a few SJs involving sending out more documents and making impenetrable phone calls have resulted from the sorting.

CherryRipe1 · 15/01/2026 07:30

Today's SJs, walk to post office in the rain to post off some more eBay sales. I could book a collection but I need the exercise. Book local carpet fitters for an estimate for the spare/guest room. Clean the oven on the pyrolitic setting for 2 hrs. At least the kitchen will be toasty.

CleanSkin · 15/01/2026 08:49

Today’s SJ list starts with getting up as I’m feeling ####
(I’m not taking the mick, I’m genuinely disabled).
Anything else is a major plus.

Missingducks · 15/01/2026 11:52

@Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride you have made my month with 'digging a DH size hole under the patio'
Thank you!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 15/01/2026 11:52

This thread is SO inspiring. I was busy yesterday so I didn't do a shit job, but today I've cleared out the gas boiler cupboard, which is like a black hole in that it swallows everything. Anyway it's now dusted, tidy and free of junk.

Same here. I have to push through a massive pain barrier to function and so doing SJs is a big achievement for me. Not looking for pity, just commiserating!

CleanSkin · 15/01/2026 12:25

Hey @CherryRipe1 👋🏻 So sorry that you have to deal with all this stuff too, frankly it’s unfair that anyone should have to.
I made it & have emptied the dishwasher, hope you’ve been able to do something too. Happily, my DDog has cuddled up next to me on a comfy chair & I simply cannot move (morally, not physically!) so for now I’ll quietly sit in awe of @ChocolateCinderToffee‘s gas boiler cupboard 🎖️

(edited to improve grammar as DDog is not actually called Happily)

Edited

I've just been up to admire it again. Still beautiful . . .
