One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

I've done lots of SJs in the last few days including some admin ones, some DIY ones, and some organising.
Tomorrow I have a vast amount of old paperwork to sift through. Filing cabinets are a great idea until they're full and you realise how much crap is lurking!

TimeForTeaAndMe · 12/01/2026 23:53

Today's sj was to finally get the very large 7 black bags currently sitting in the car to the clothes bank. I drove to 5 locations to find non of them are being emptied🤷🏻‍♀️

Some have piles of bags on the tops and surrounding grounds around them. I was told at least two of them have been like this since before Xmas.

So the decision has been made to take it all to the tip tomorrow. As tomorrow's sj is to ram car full of everything needing to go to the tip.

P.s non of the charity shops want clothing. Feels like such a waste.

On a happier note. Ive actually got through so many sj in the last two days. I'm actually amazed I pulled it all off.

The one sj I'm looking forward to this weekend (so not so much a sj more a messy job)
Jet washing the patio 😁

CleanSkin · 13/01/2026 09:30

Well done @TimeForTeaAndMe
It’s sad that they don’t want clothes; do you have any recycling banks near you that can take them? At lease they’ll be in the supply chain then.

EducatingArti · 13/01/2026 11:30

Struggling to get going today but have just made a coffee, so hoping that will help!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 13/01/2026 11:56

Crap weather today so I'm on a roll: cleaned out the dishwasher and all its bits, cleaned the outside of the washing machine, mopped the kitchen floor and put washing soda and boiling water down the kitchen sink to clean that.

New mobile phone. SJ today pairing it to other devices and resetting banking app. Absolutely detest this process. It takes me so long to sort out a new phone.

My son did this for me at Christmas. Was like magic. He just typed something in and waited. Told me when it was all done.

EducatingArti · 13/01/2026 14:36

SJs so far:
Starting some admin for my mum's estate. Sorting through 3 big storage baskets in the hall cupboard.
I'm also aiming to take a box of stuff for the chazza out to the car before it gets dark!

space99 · 13/01/2026 16:48

Keep up the good work everybody. This thread is definitely helping me crack on with my list.
Today I have cleared out and sorted the under bed storage and done two more trips to the charity shops. Luckily have quite a few nearby and they are all currently accepting donations. Tomorrow I will concentrate on the excess of books we have and then I will head specifically to Oxfam as they have a designated bookstore near me.

Ruthietuthie · 13/01/2026 17:02

Dealt with some bureaucracy, that necessitated multiple phone calls and lots of waiting on line.
Car is being serviced as I write and I had it cleaned last week.
Hoping I can tackle a tiny bit more of the basement this evening.
Good work everyone!

Transfer exactly the same here, however things need pairing up again. Your bank would recognise a new handset even if you type in the same login details, you need to re-pair your phone and car, phone and video door bell, phone and dashcam....the list goes on. If you have a fair bit of tech it takes ages. Even my RinGo parking app needed resetting as I have a stored payment. I appreciate the safety aspect though!

QuiltyAsCharged · 13/01/2026 19:02

Enjoying this thread.

Today's shitty jobs:
✔️Went to the local framers to get some mounts measured for artwork
✔️Emptied the mop bucket from yesterday
✔️Packed away wreath-making stuff for next Christmas
✔️Emptied the first of three bags of business stock I need to put away
✔️ Emptied my bedroom bin
✔️Cleaned the draining rack, draining board and cutlery holder

hottentot · 13/01/2026 19:04

Cleaned the bins and their lids for the barhrooms 😊

DeathMetalMum · 13/01/2026 19:29

Only a few small things today. I have a light cold and slept poorly last night. I have also prioritised some exercise this week. I had an hour walk today (some light weights yesterday evening).

I used bicarb and vinegar to clean out the sinks upstairs and downstairs. I also gave the bathroom tiles and the rubber bath mat a good scrub. I have continued to fill up a bag for the charity shop clearing some things from the kitchen side and drawer. I've put an old candle in the freezer to clean out the glass too. That will be my 'easy' job tomorrow before/after work. I have several empty next to the kitchen sink that have been there for a few months, as I wasn't sure how to clean them out.

This thread is really helping me keep doing even just a small job that I possibly would have left. Everyone is making great progress.

EducatingArti · 13/01/2026 19:33

Box now in car to go to chazza.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/01/2026 19:43

Ordered some Bicarbonate of Soda - does that count ?
The SJ will be mixing it with vinegar and cleaning the sink probably on Thursday night .

Shittyyear2025 · 14/01/2026 07:01

Having a shit week. SJ yesterday was the cupboard that all the crap kitchenalia ends up in.

Got rid of several mis-matched Tupperware lids/containers, list for water bottles and bottles that don't have lids. Random ice packs from food deliveries. Shelf for the dishwasher I've never used, door shelf for the fridge that won't fit.

I printed out a list of SJs to tick off and add to as I go for inspiration. Ordered a DIY part that arrived yesterday so that's on the list for Saturday. Another spare parts arrived yesterday for something I can now put on eBay (couldn't get eBay on my phone yesterday, might take pics before I go into work to upload at lunch).

Office day today followed by dinner out, unlikely to get anything major achieved today.

Paid a massive bill then had to lie down for the rest of the day to recuperate!

caramac04 · 14/01/2026 08:47

@Missingducks made me laugh before I’ve even drank my coffee. A miracle has occurred.
I plan to have another wardrobe cull this afternoon.

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 14/01/2026 09:12

I saw this thread when it started and thought what a great idea, I'll join that as it might help me with my eternal procrastination...then procrastinated and forgot to post on it 😀

Thanks for getting it going @Shittyyear2025 and a massive belated congrats on redeeming your mortgage - I did that in 2015 and I've still never got over the joy of it!

I have actually got quite a lot of SJs done so far this year, mainly tackling things like actually putting away all those things that I dump on the breakfast bar with a view to sorting at some point in the future that never comes. One included an earring that fell out of my DD13's ear last November. It had been sat in a Tupperware since then 🤔

The problem I find is that my entire life/domestic organisation feels like Domino rally - so many tasks impact upon or are impacted by another. My office is full of stuff such as books that my DD cleared out - I need to go through those and work out what's going to charity, what's saleable, which she'll want back at some point even though she says she'll never read again right now etc. But the prospect feels massive (because my desk is also covered in paperwork that I need to file, and my filing cabinet is full of outdated documents that need to be cleared, and I can't get to my filing cabinet for the books...) So instead of tackling any of that I start on something else...which leaves me with more things I need to store until I can find time to go through them all, which leads me to think I'll put everything in my office and that can be the To Be Cleared space. Then the room is so full that I almost can't get in there, so I just ignore it. It's this that drives me mad. I'm trying to address this by completing single tasks that don't seem to impact anything else. Such as removing an earring from a Tupperware. Dear god.

@FindingMeno I'm totally with you on the filing cabinet of doom as you can see and that is on my list. It's that critical moment where you realise that things aren't actually properly filed in there, they're parked in a vaguely relevant folder awaiting a decision on their worthiness to be stored there. And by the time you go through them the decision is made as they turn out to be your insurance documents from 2011 or similar and they go straight in the shredding pile. Which is another task in itself (I've broken shredders before now when shredding years worth of dead documents in one go.)

Anyway...yesterday I did get stuff done:

Cleaned out a mini L'Occitane shea butter tin and re-filled from a large tin (love this stuff as lip balm, have mini tins all over the place)
Processed some domestic financial stuff
Ploughed through a huge ironing pile so I can actually see my dining table again as that was the current dumping spot
Re-organised chargers so I have appropriate ones everywhere for all devices
Cleared a load of stuff away in the porch - shoes into shoe racks rather than being parked on the floor

Onwards and ever sideways.

I think that’s called a crapalanche! I sorted my baking crapalanche cupboard out in my post-Xmas kitchen tidy up.

basically getting rid of stuff is the long term solution. If you don’t own it you don’t have to store it.
if it’s only going to go in the bin/the tip then why keep it in your house?! Your house is not the tip lol. Not lol though as that’s how I used to think. Getting rid of more and more things now.

I am finding that decluttering and tidying up a space - it does seem to stay tidy. I call it ‘sticking’ ie did that tidy up ‘stick’ and that space doesn’t need decluttered again.

I'm the same and put it off until my current phone dies. Then get annoyed with myself as the actual process seems fairly easy when I actually get on and do it, and I realise I've just worked myself into a ball of stress by delaying it, plus I've gone an extra however many months with a knackered phone that doesn't meet my needs, the retention of which in fact actually causes me more stress than if I'd just upgraded when it was due in the first place. And every time I tell myself to remember this, and to not get uptight about it and just go and get sorted...but the whole process starts again! Well done for getting that task done.

HappyNooYear · 14/01/2026 09:23

If you going from iPhone to iPhone there’s literally one setting to pick on the old phone & old phone and it does it all for you.

CleanSkin · 14/01/2026 12:28

@Shittyyear2025 @NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen Thank you for your posts, you’re inspirational - your both doing so much & really represent real life 🥰

Today I have gone out into the cold & taken some bits to be repaired, bought some dog food for the freezer (& there was space for it!) Plus DH & I have renewed car insurance on time (!) & saved £110 (by taking off a DC amongst other things)
Seriously considering cleaning the washing machine overnight, a small SJ admittedly- more about remembering than effort really - but I deserve an easy one now 😁

justasking111 · 14/01/2026 12:42

I bought some big clear bags with handles to store Xmas decorations in the loft. Spent this morning sorting and packing so no more shitty carrier bags. The hospital is phoning at 1pm to do a pre OP health assessment. Wish me luck
