One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Yesterdays shitty job was cleaning out all the dust and lost things from behind the telly, and sorting/tidying the miles of cables/wires. It was very satisfying when done though.

todays shitty job is 2 parts
Done part 1 - take car to garage for service and MOT and walk home in the rain, meh.

Part 2 - later today (or whenever depending on how much work is needed) walking back in the rain, handing over loads of money, and driving home thinking thank goodness thats done for another year.

I'm back at work so a bit slow on the SJs.

But even with all the renovations and SJs having last week off work did me so much good!

Tomorrow I need to go through things in the garage again and take stuff to the charity shop (again). I also need to go through the wardrobes (again). Much as I hate gardening I wish it would be dry so I could cut back and sweep up.

The row putting the bookcases together made me smile. I'm shocking at DIY!

I've just been up to admire it again. Still beautiful . . .

I have to do this too! And if there's someone else around I DEMAND that they come and worship the newly clean and tidy [whatever]. I get such huge pleasure from things being orderly; I just wish I could summon the resolve to keep them that way!

ETA: Happily would be a lovely name for a dog, I think.

Had the pre op assessment for surgery this morning. Stresses me out. But this time blood pressure, heart, were spot on, thank god. I didn't want the BP pills again. Hospital happy, so I'm happy.

I'm just going to relax this afternoon with a book.

Made inroads into sorting drawers in the kitchen. I have moved some cutlery into freestanding drawers on the work surface, then put various supplements/vitamins in the ex - cutlery drawer. Plus wiping out said drawer. It should help to stop the work surface being cluttered!

Ive been busy doing SJ and forgot to post, i have four cupboards, cleared, cleaned and reorganised and tomorrow i will collect my dry cleaning thats been waiting since early November

DeathMetalMum · 15/01/2026 19:02

Yesterday I cleaned out one of the glass candle holders, still need to work out how to get the metal bit of the wick out.

I also took some old glasses (several pairs) to be recycled at the opticians which is inside the supermarket I visit probably once a week. They have been sitting on my bedroom in a shoebox for maybe two years. I was going to post them somewhere until I discovered the recycling bin in the supermarket. It has only taken me 8 months to take them there. I also cleaned out the outside drain which is one of the shittiest SJ going. This wasn't particularly by choice as it was starting to become blocked but I'm putting it on the list.

Ah! which optician's please? I found two pairs of old glasses yesterday.

DeathMetalMum · 15/01/2026 20:33

@ChocolateCinderToffee Asda opticians.

I also booked an appointment at said opticians. My eye test isn't due but my current lenses have become scratched. So that's another SJ done and one to look forward to.

Crucible · 15/01/2026 22:38

4 SJ today. All niggly collections and drop offs with shitty parking, in the rain, different keys for places, time limits, one conversation involved, two sets of bloody temporary traffic lights. But did all four. If I could have found a functional clothes bank it'd have been 5. I was so glad to be home.
Also went to Tesco and did a shop using offers, and found my first milk substitute to try. (8 weeks on low fodmap. Eliminating everything....☹️)

Shittyyear2025 · 15/01/2026 22:54

One of those perfect storm days at work today so really not in the mood for SJ when I got in.

But. If I EVER buy a plastic carrier bag again, I will be so cross. I've sorted out that cupboard and as well as 8 big IKEA bags, there were 18 of those heavy duty shopping bags and over 30 carrier bags for life. I'm going to place some strategically in the car so I have no excuse.

At the back of that cupboard (awkward corner one) is the picnic/party box. Fairly sure my DC have grown out of Spiderman and unicorn paper ware so that's on the local FB crap freebie page.

I sorted out the top food shelf - a couple more to do to get the cupboard done.

Also applied silicone to the PVC hinges as they are all sticking.

Set up our new scales and did a bit more hen do planing.

Getting there!

CleanSkin · 15/01/2026 12:25

Hey @CherryRipe1 👋🏻 So sorry that you have to deal with all this stuff too, frankly it’s unfair that anyone should have to.
I made it & have emptied the dishwasher, hope you’ve been able to do something too. Happily, my DDog has cuddled up next to me on a comfy chair & I simply cannot move (morally, not physically!) so for now I’ll quietly sit in awe of @ChocolateCinderToffee‘s gas boiler cupboard 🎖️

(edited to improve grammar as DDog is not actually called Happily)

👋Creakily waves back!! Yes, as the Americans say, it sucks! I realise there are people more disabled than me so try to keep it in perspective, as my consultant said, "at least you can walk" which I was a bit miffed about at the time, but in hindsight she was right, I can walk if painfully & clumsily, most days. Yesterday was a good day, managed to get to the post office by bus & post more sold items off. The carpet shop near the P.O. was temporarily closed so will have to pop back to look at samples and arrange an estimate. Did a bit of food shopping and managed to walk home. Mopped the bathroom and lounge floors as they were looking very grubby, tidied the lounge, stored some stuff in the under bed storage, electric sanded the spare room fireplace ready for painting. Listed a couple more items for sale. Today , I'll probably pay for yesterday so won't do much but at least the lounge is clean and tidy. Awww dogs can be such a comfort!

Yes yes to getting huge pleasure from being orderly - I'm still going into my office and feeling the joy at the fact that I can actually walk across the whole room without tripping over stuff! (And wishing I could always live/be this way)

Yes yes to making other people worship your newly clean and tidy spaces - I showed DS18 my deep cleaned shower the other day and compelled him to act as if suitably impressed 😀

Yes yes someone needs a dog called Happily, probably me

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 16/01/2026 10:58

Office chair sold yesterday, I said I was open to offers and got 3 offers at exactly the same price so I knew it had found its level. That's collected and gone and I'm very relieved (profit put into my Treats Fund which pays for my holidays each year.)

Sold two other items on eBay (profit into Treats Fund)

Listed old shoe rack as a freebie and got 27,000* people wanting it. Did my usual thing of getting chatting to all the middle aged mums like me who wanted it to assist with their ongoing domestic re-organisations/SJ endeavours so now I have 5 new local friends 😀

Arranged a return for an item bought on Amazon before Christmas

I put the laundry away straight from the tumble dryer yesterday for the first time in living memory (as opposed to having it sit in one of those foldable plastic crates that I use to transfer things from the washer into the tumble and then out of the tumble to be put away.) 'Little' things like that are making all the difference.

Got DS18 to help me get DD13's unwanted books into the loft. My loft is insanely full and once the house is sorted I must get up there and clear it but for now I don't have the physical or head space to go through stuff so it's out of sight out of mind only until the house is running like a machine, then it's Operation Tackle The Loft 2026 this is what I say every year

*slight exaggeration but not much

throwawayusernamefornow · 16/01/2026 11:06

Some lazy Susans are in the fridge for all the condiments, it is SO much better organised!
Also dropped a bag of toys off to the charity bin - the bags been sat in the car for weeks. Winner!!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 16/01/2026 12:28

I've just spent an hour or so on the phone to HMRC.

Probably the shittiest job I will do all year.

CharlotteRumpling · 16/01/2026 12:41

I had a fight with DH. Does that count? Ironically it was over shitty jobs.

Ah that's shit. Did you get anything resolved?

PermanentTemporary · 16/01/2026 13:35

An SJ that’s been hanging around for 5 years; I took a book back to the library that I took out just before lockdown… I’ve dreaded it!

Missingducks · 16/01/2026 14:27

SJ Sisterhood, please arrange to have me hung, drawn, and quartered if I do not report that I have stopped the bathroom door hinge squeaking by Sunday evening. It has been grinding my gears for 30 months. I think you will make it happen.

space99 · 16/01/2026 14:56

Well finally sorted out the book shelves which I have been putting off.
Have 2 heavy bags to take to Oxfam tomorrow. Will have to take tomorrow with DH as too heavy to carry by myself and nowhere to park nearby. Am sure he’ll be thrilled!!
Did you have to pay a fine @PermanentTemporary ?

PermanentTemporary · 16/01/2026 14:58

Yes but about 10% of what I thought I’d have to pay!

space99 · 16/01/2026 15:01

Yes, outsourcing.some of the cooking. Which I have been doing too much of. So no time for SJs.
