One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Lugged a pile of clothes, some ten years old, to a charity shop. I loathe doing this because I don't drive.

I do drive but so many charity shops near me are inaccessible by car and I don’t really pass any by in my usual routine.

A trip to the dump (by car) is far less hassle.

I agree! I have all the figures ready for my tax return but spending that 20 - 30 mins to fill it in online gets left until January! One year I did actually do it in April and then kept having panicky moments in December when the reminder emails came in, as I kept forgetting that I had already done it.
SJ's today have been spray walking boots with waterproof spray ✔️, sewing up holes in jumper ✔️ and phone up locksmith to fit new front door lock (he came over in 20 mins, fitted the lock in 10 mins so whole thing done in 1/2 an hour!)✔️

Sewing up - thanks for reminding me me! I was in a real panic the other day - having paid in the supermarket, I couldn’t find my car keys. Retraced my steps, checked with customer services in case they’d been handed in - no joy. Until I realised that there was a bloody great hole in my coat pocket, and my keys had fallen into the lining!
That was at least a week ago, and I still haven’t mended it.

Great to read what sj you have been crossing off your lists. I have cleaned and tidied our bedside tables and cleared out more clothes for charity shop. Two bags ready to take in tomorrow. Also done some pension admin which I have been putting off.

Removed the limescale from the shower head & fixed the dishwasher 👍.

Do you not have charity collections from your doorstep?

Nugg · 12/01/2026 16:24

I’m in! Today I emptied my sideboard, re- stored some of the things in it and threw away the rest. Now it can be sold!

Have cleaned the inside of the fridge door - not yet the outside of the door, nor the inside of the fridge itself ... But the four door shelves are now clean and the milk shelf looks so much better. Trying to gather energy to tackle the vegetable-salad-fruit crisper drawer ... last time found mummified lemons

🤣 I found some brown mummified limes lurking in the fridge, I thought they were kiwi fruits at first. I wonder if removable fridge parts are dishwasher safe? They can be a pain to wash, rinse and dry.

Defrosted the freezer
cleaned the oven
cleaned the fridge
I still have loads of Lego sorting to do though that’s endless!

Wow!

That is a lot of SJs in one day 😂

I agree. Think if I cleaned the oven, I would need a whole week off shitty jobs to recover 😂

fixingmylife · 12/01/2026 16:55

I cleaned out the cutlery drawer at last.

Only very occasionally.

I quite often have a couple of bags for the charity shops in the boot of my car, and if I see a shop with parking I will just nip in and dump them. Considering that I live in London, an awful lot of my charity stuff goes to Oxfam in Norwich, because they have parking AND helpful volunteers who will unload it for you.

(This is because Norwich is DM's nearest city)

SqueakyDinosaur · 12/01/2026 17:23

I need to order a new fridge/freezer - I've had mine for about 15 years and various bits of it have broken/are falling off, plus the freezer is about the size of a large shoebox and absolutely stuffed with things.

We had two bags for the same day last week , different charities .
If I have clothes or shoes to put in -they all say "no bric-a-brac" that's fine .
They need to go out before 8am, I do this before I leave for work , but you cannot guarantee they get picked up by the charity .

We live in a chazza heaven town-semi rural, some affluent and older people. There's 5 currently. Only 1 is accepting donations and that was grudgingly. Hopefully its the pre Christmas clearout and it'll be normal soon. As ive still got stacks to go.
We had to collect the car today so got to get out of town. I was giddy! So small sj was sorting out the area where the new trolley for the dog food is going in preparation for the new cookbook book shelves. Tomorrow oven cleaning...

I left my drop-off till this week as I thought post Christmas they'll be inundated.
There's a couple nearby with some parking if it is heavy , otherwise there's more in town . .

@toomanyhobbies Sorry to hear about todays shitty job

@CleanSkin I am currently freewheeling while making a list as i go. There are a few obvious -in your face- shitty jobs outstanding from last year that i'm freewheeling through choosing randomly as I go, but also making a list of other jobs than need doing but can wait, also getting a few good ideas on this thread.

No specific shitty job today as too busy catching up on everyday jobs ( although tbf some of which were a bit shitty too)

CherryRipe1 · 12/01/2026 18:38

Finally managed to descale the kettle while my partner was out (he's a teaholic)! It's lovely and sparkly now. I had another inspection of the dishwasher and lo and behold there was gunk. I tipped the citric acid from the kettle into the dishwasher and ran it on a strong wash and the gunk and limescale is all gone. A frugal win.

I like this idea. I also submitted meter readings today which admittedly took about five minutes but Rome wasn't built in a day.

Think “BTN” … better than nothing

Witchymadwoman · 12/01/2026 18:45

Went shopping and made a huge salad for lunch, washed and dried one of the coverless duvets, took a load of cardboard to the tip and collected four big bags of logs for the fire on the way back.

I put my fridge shelves and the door shelves in the dishwasher but only on the glass cycle .
The salad drawer does fit if I arrange it properly but it's easier to wash them in the sink TBH.
Sink is massive which is the only reason I keep it because it's a pain to clean.
I have some bicarbonate of soda in the sink to see if that helps .

I need to defrost the fridge before Thursday when the food shop arrives

toomanycatsonthedancefloor · 12/01/2026 20:02

I’m currently en route to the US for work so using flight time to delete photos from 2016-2018. I went through a bad breakup in 2016 and so far I’ve deleted about 800 photos that remind me of that period. Cathartic and freeing up space on my iCloud! Win win!

EducatingArti · 12/01/2026 20:32

So SJs today were re- gluing the wardrobe door and making an optician appointment.

CleanSkin · 12/01/2026 22:49

Thanks @Justgivemehotchocolate
I’ve been freewheeling through the default storage room - not hard as there’s so much to do! But the list has definitely started to grow this evening, as I’d hoped.

Lawdy we’re amazing!
