One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Well, as I said it’s not really an SJ for me but I have an empty ironing basket and that’s a good start to the week.

CharlotteRumpling · 11/01/2026 18:04

I sorted out the post which had piled up after Xmas. Threw out all the catalogues.

Undercovers · 11/01/2026 19:09

Visited the bottle bank for the first time since Christmas and posted an important letter I've been carrying around for a week.

Shittyyear2025 · 11/01/2026 19:28

Fridge has had its first clear-out and clean since Xmas, grim.

Sorted out a proper storage solution for my mixer and all it's attachments. Now I don't have to fish about at the back of the cupboard for the one bit I need each time I get it out. Will be getting the rest of the crap out of that cupboard after tea to clean/chuck any useless tat that hasn't seen the light of day for a while.

Got some paperwork to sort before bed too, I need to submit DBS application tomorrow with a bit of a deadline...

The new washing machine is installed and it is FABULOUS. Six washes done thus far and I am just about caught up.
I've also made enough start on the basement that I want to continue. Hooray for getting shitty jobs done.

Last Sunday my Sj was getting all the ironing done and put away as well as all the socks paired and away.

yesterdays job was getting the xmas
tree down and all the decorations packed away. Dc still has the trees in their room but they wanted them up til their birthday next weeks and it was a shitty Christmas so agreed.
Gave the livingroom its first proper clean since the decoration went up.

Today’s sj was sorting out the bathroom cabinet. 5 bath bombs and a bottle of Matty and nearly finished bubble bath all gone. Cabinet cleaned and organised. Bathroom cleaned.

Also gave the dinningroom a good clean and got all the ornaments back ready for family to come over for dinner.

Mondays job will be visiting the funeral directors to sort mums funeral out. Will also change the beds.

Hooray for your new washing machine, and everything you've done to facilitate it, and everything that's to come!

I love this plan, thank you OP.
Need to have think about where to start as I’ve a heck of a lot of things to put on my list!
How have PPs organised - a list, by room or priority, or are you freewheeling?
I honestly don’t know where to start & fear I’m heading toward stasis before action!

Witchymadwoman · 11/01/2026 23:08

Mostly admin today - messages to various tradesmen (and women) who we need to come and build stuff or fix stuff.

ShittyJobCrew · 11/01/2026 23:50

Had a good day today!

Cleaned the windows and shower screen upstairs, finished getting rid of the mould in the bathroom, hoovered upstairs, cleaned the fridge out. I also sorted the Christmas cards and put the last bits away, swapped some too small toddler clothes out for ones that fit. Got a shop delivered so I don’t need to do that tomorrow.

A SJ I’d been putting off was organising my sister’s hen do - I’ve booked some accommodation so that is a big weight off my mind.

Phew! Got a last min invite to celebrate Algerian new year so didn’t do other things I’d planned to sort in the evening but as someone up thread said you have to make time for the nice things too.

Mine is a list of each room plus outside jobs that need addressing like for eg paint fence, clean upvc. I also do a priority list of immediate stuff that needs sorting like ring hospital, pick up medication, get birthday cards, post eBay stuff off etc. As jobs get done I transfer an easier job from a room/outside eg sort under bed storage or clear junk in garden to the priority list. The priory list is the main focus so eventually only the bigger non urgent jobs that need time and effort remain.
Yesterdays SJs were tidy under bed storage, threw out loads of junk bagged some stuff for the charity shop. Also whittled down a box of stuff for the loft into a much smaller box. Today, just finished the shower and put the grotty plastic caddies and tooth brush mugs in the dishwasher. Posting off more eBay sales today & sorting my wardrobe out but by bit. Got too many clothes I don't wear so will list these or donate them. Had an inspection of my dishwasher on the strength of that dishwasher thread and am happy to report it's quite clean except the metal plate filter thing with holes, that looks limescaley so will clean on an intense cycle with citric acid. The kettle needs descaling too.

Moved some books on yesterday - have a part filled bag for next weekend too. Am no longer keeping paperbacks we have read and will never reread. They can go to friends or to chazza. Also decided display of cook books never opened is just kitchen clutter. I look up recipes online anyway. I like a cookbook with a story but not just a collection of recipes. Begone.

CleanSkin · 12/01/2026 12:30

I am now inspired, specifically by @Missingducks& @CherryRipe1- thank you.
I shall use a particularly lovely notebook for my list, which I’ll make this evening when cuddling my dog (who, with the cat, probably needs a category of her own!).
Already I’ve posted a parcel that’s been hanging around too long AND sorted / recycled DC’s old school work, useable stationery etc.
I think tomorrow will include the paperbacks that will never be re-read by us.
This feels good!

caramac04 · 12/01/2026 13:27

SJ of the day. Sorting through half my wardrobe and bagging up 3 black bags of clothes I don’t wear. They’re not full but they are heavy.
I’ve got to nip out later so will take them to the clothes bank which hopefully isn’t full. There are a few so I’m sure they will fit somewhere.
Im on a mission to have a capsule wardrobe and have now hung up trousers and t-shirts which I can see properly.

So far this morning I have tidied up the bedroom and done some dusting but I'm not sure if it counts as an SJ as it is general cleaning/ housework.

SqueakyDinosaur · 12/01/2026 14:01

My SJ for today will have to be a work-related one.

Definitely SJ imo.

Have cleaned the inside of the fridge door - not yet the outside of the door, nor the inside of the fridge itself ... But the four door shelves are now clean and the milk shelf looks so much better. Trying to gather energy to tackle the vegetable-salad-fruit crisper drawer ... last time found mummified lemons

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/01/2026 14:30

Well, I’ve ticked off one today - the dreaded tax return.*
Plenty more on the list, though! Especially so much old paperwork I could chuck - I hate paperwork!

*never nearly as bad or PITA-ish as I think, so why I don’t do it sooner, instead of invariably putting it off until January, I don’t know.

See for me, ideally a SJ is something out of the ordinary, rather than basic household cleaning
My reasoning is that I want to improve my living conditions which is why one SJ will help, except if it is basic housework, then one SJ won't be enough to improve things!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/01/2026 15:21

Couple more things to the Charity Shop that I forgot on Saturday Doh '.
These from DS bedroom ( that really was an SJ ! ) I helped him declutter over New Year when I say "helped" it was convincing him to move an entire paper-mill worth of A4 into some sort of order or recycle , then tidy what was under the paper !

Recycling is therapeutic in its way .
There is now a space for the coffee maker rather than it being pushed to the back and ignored .

ChocolateCinderToffee · 12/01/2026 15:34

Lugged a pile of clothes, some ten years old, to a charity shop. I loathe doing this because I don't drive.

I agree! I have all the figures ready for my tax return but spending that 20 - 30 mins to fill it in online gets left until January! One year I did actually do it in April and then kept having panicky moments in December when the reminder emails came in, as I kept forgetting that I had already done it.
SJ's today have been spray walking boots with waterproof spray ✔️, sewing up holes in jumper ✔️ and phone up locksmith to fit new front door lock (he came over in 20 mins, fitted the lock in 10 mins so whole thing done in 1/2 an hour!)✔️
