One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Today’s SJ. Clean the bathroom and downstairs toilet. Usually do bathroom twice a wee and downstairs loo every other day but it’s been 7-10 days now. Or more. Who knows 🤷‍♀️
Anyway, I spray all the surfaces and put toilet cleaner around the bowl then go and have a coffee. Spray downstairs loo then go up to wipe and clean in bathroom. Back downstairs to repeat process in loo.
Then more coffee
I have treated myself to a bottle of Nozeco as I’m cutting back hard on booze.
I am incredibly short tempered since I lost my dog. Often gritting my teeth at poor DH.

Spent a couple of hours ironing. That's a SJ in my book, I put it off for weeks sometimes.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2026 17:26

I took a whole car boot load of cardboard to the tip, that’s my SJ of the day! Tomorrow I plan to clear a bag of toys out of ds’s room and sort out and add a bag onto vinted of my clothes.

space99 · 10/01/2026 17:32

My sj that been putting off for more than a year is getting rid of old computer consoles that haven’t been used for years. Had to factory reset them and clean them. Took them to CEX to trade in as cba trying to eBay or privately sell. Will take the tv stand to tip tomorrow.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/01/2026 17:36

Recycled some electricals
Took a bag of clothes and a bag of household item to the Charity Shop
DW is on a clean cycle (meant to have been beginning of the month but it didn't happen)
WM will go on once I've cleaned the seals and the cloth can go in the drum with the cleaning cycle

Plan for tomorrow :
Clean the bathroom floor
Look in the garden to see what needs pruned
Put the cleaning spray on the oven and the racks in the bag of cleaning fluid overnight
Wash DS bedding ( we have 50% off electricity on Sunday for about 6 hours so best time to do this )

That sounds a little excessive, @caramac04! Grin

We have one of the robot vacuum thingies , it really is an utter pain in the arse

It is programmed to go off round the bedroom. It leaves the bedroom and gets stuck under the wardrobe in the small room .
It cannot cope with the bars bit on the bed legs . We get a constant message that it is stuck somewhere .
It is terrified of sock fluff so just swans over not picking up.
If I run the regular vacuum over , the amount of dust I collect proves what a crock of shit this is .

One of my cats threw up under the bed , luckily mainly biscuits and luckily not the other end , The robot vac scattered it across the carpet , I had to brush it up then clean the bloody vacuum Hmm

I’m so glad you’ve shared this! My husband keeps talking about getting one and your experience has given me reasons to get him to change his mind!

WindyW · 10/01/2026 19:25

So many parcels sorted today! And a big declutter of old bedding to Dunelm.

I know most people love them and you can get ones that you can programme to avoid large unidentified piles ....!

I might move it downstairs to float about but we have too many wires and cables . And the sofa was chosen so it has a space underneath for our Male Cat so the vacuum would go underneath too !

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/01/2026 19:44

I cleaned the DW after it's clean cycle , used a spray bottle of hot water and a thin brush to clean the trays and pull out bits
Eurgh is all I can say !

I'm doing another cycle with a bowl of white vinegar in the top rack then I'll leave it overnight to air .

Very therapeutic but a manky job !

Started on sorting the bathroom ( post redecorating after the Great Soil Pipe Saga of 2025). Should be done by the end of the day
Also done a quick but annoying admin list.

This might be a bit outing! Many years ago the management company to my flats messed up a soil pipe repair which led to raw sewage seeping into the concrete floors over a long period. I had vinyl down which effectively kept a watertight seal over it though I did smell damp and musty smells from time to time but couldn't locate the source.

Anyway to cut a very long story short, the leak has finally been repaired and all the damage remediated. I had to move out for a month!

Bathroom is now newly decorated with new vinyl. Lots of the contents of the bathroom were still on the floor in my spare room though so I have been sorting them out!

toomanycatsonthedancefloor · 10/01/2026 19:58

I filed my self assessment today! I really didn’t want to but it’s in! 😎

EducatingArti · 10/01/2026 20:09

The "saga" referred to the exciting ups and downs of management company incompetence!

CatCatCatCatCatCatCat · 10/01/2026 20:27

Joining in after reading for a while
Started earlier this week, so bit of a catch up, but have hung the shelves for DS funko pops (2 jobs technically as the velcro picture hanging tape stuff didn't hold so ended up drilling after trying to avoid having to do so. Also done self assessment and ruthlessly sorted the under the bed storage, chucked a bunch of stuff that moved with us 3 years ago but never used.

Booked cats in for vaccinations and caught up on sending emails for DC clubs/appointment etc.

Today I started a small tiling job, just extending the tiles above cooker. First time ever doing tiling, but happy with the result so far! Had the tiles and other supplies ready for months, this thread gave me the motivation to actually get it started.

Tomorrow is grouting, after you tubing how to do so 🙂

Witchymadwoman · 10/01/2026 20:52

Stripped the bed, washed and dried the sheets. Reduced the Xmas tree trunk to three pieces with the mini chain saw - tree and some other garden rubbish is in the garden bin waiting for the first collection (March). Cleaned the dishwasher filter and ran a machine cleaning program. Packed a bag of stuff for the charity shop and loaded the car with stuff for the tip. Quick dust and polish of the living room. Not a bad day 🙂

CherryRipe1 · 10/01/2026 21:48

Today's SJs, cleaned another section of the shower, tidied the under bed storage and threw out an old grotty rucksack and some old medical equipment.

DeathMetalMum · 10/01/2026 22:10

I cleared out some emails and unsubscribed from a few more spam emails. Saturday is washing uniform day along with DC at clubs/sports matches. Some can be calmer than others, today I was either out of the house or making and eating lunch/dinner it felt. So no proper SJ completed I'm grasping at emails as I only touched the surface really (38,800 ish still unread).

Shittyyear2025 · 10/01/2026 22:11

I sacked off the SJs for today and had a day out with DD. She's had a bit of a strange Xmas and heading back to uni soon so it was good to reconnect a bit. I think we sometimes leave stuff like this because it's not essential or a priority. But if one of my kids isn't happy, I'm not either. So, she's all good, I've stripped my bed (must replace before bed, damnit), basic kitchen chores done, Tom Cruise on the TV, last of the Xmas Bailey's nearly done, well done everyone!

Took the bags to the chazzer (love this new word) and returned an unwanted expensive Christmas present i'd bought. Wasn't going to bother but made the effort eventually so calling it my SJ of the day.

Justgivemehotchocolate · 11/01/2026 12:55

Eww gross.

Although I was half expecting something much more dramatic and smelly 💩💩 😁

EducatingArti · 11/01/2026 12:57

So, I bought 3 new items of clothing and in the spirit of decluttering have got rid of 5 items of clothing plus 3 or 4 old towels - to the chazzer or for rag.
I am determined to reduce the amount of stuff I have this year, so have decided that for everything that comes in, more has to go out!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/01/2026 14:44

Nice for today - made a batch of Chocolate Brownies

Dinner will be some things out of the freezer - the fridge needs to be defrosted as it creates a massive ice berg at the back . It is an old Fridge Freezer so each time I switch it off to defrost I worry if it will work again !
The freezer bit is ok so I can leave that closed if I decant anything frozen to the garage freezer , open the fridge and remove the ice after a few minutes , wipe the shelves , check the drainage tube and hopefully it won't realise Xmas Grin

I've got some recycling from DS room, that can go out to Charity Shop this week.

hottentot · 11/01/2026 15:00

Yay!

Finally cleaned out the cars!

Dirt and dust from eons ago that I keep looking at and thinking ‘must clean that!’

Funny thing is husband drives these cars snd never sees it! 🤔

Specialagentblond · 11/01/2026 15:11

Cleared out the snack drawer of doom. It was baaaaaad. But not no more!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/01/2026 17:31

Sorted out a pile of stuff to put on vinted but the rule is if I don’t do it within 2 weeks I take it to the charity shop because otherwise I end up with an overwhelming pile of stuff to list. So I have 10 decent items to go on. I also sorted out boys pjs from their bedrooms and put them for charity, and a pile of board games that have not been played, also for the charity shop.
