One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Have had a quieter few days. Tuesday while making dinner I cleaned out the bottom shelf of the tea and coffee cupboard. I did a 'quick' job on Wednesday - cleaning the washing machine drawer it was a bit mouldy and actually took me 20 minutes. Yesterday I skipped I worked overtime and did grocery shopping for us and also my dad.

Today I did some tidying in our bedroom my side is pretty messy. I organised my underwear drawer and threw quite a few things away, recycled some empty moisturizer bottles, put a few books back where they belong. I have a bag being compiled for the charity shop and a bag for clothes recycling started. I hope to fill both over this weekend and drop them off on the way to the supermarket next week. Bedroom still needs a lot of work but is looking better.

Not a SJ as such but I’ve put all my meds in dosette boxes for 4 weeks.

SqueakyDinosaur · 09/01/2026 18:34

I had no functioning watches today (all 3 had dead batteries and/or dead straps). So I went to Timpsons and a lovely young man replaced them all. That felt good. I might even hoover the pine needles off the stairs.

Shittyyear2025 · 09/01/2026 18:44

Finally fixed the toilet seat, hurrah!!! ✅
Ended up doing a really deep clean of the loo (grim) and the first proper post-christmas bathroom clean. Few empties to chuck, sorted the random basket of lotions and potions. We have 8 toothbrushes for 3 of us....

Had my annual review at work today that I'd postponed from before Christmas as I just wasn't in the right headspace then (recent bereavement) and it went well.

The biggest shit job I did today was, after 27 years of paying my mortgage - through 2 bed terrace, 3 bed semi, very messy divorce and selling my soul to the mortgage company to buy current place on my own, is pay my final payment. What once looked like a never-ending treadmill of chipping away at the capital and mostly paying interest, is now done. Feel a bit deflated as there is no fanfare like when you buy for the first time - everyone I work with is 20 years younger than me with massive mortgages and payments so would be a dick move to shout about it. Phew.

@Shittyyear2025Well done on all your achievements! 👏I need to change the toilet seat but I can't fathom out the mechanism & fear it's the type where the loo needs to come out. Will ask the plumber next time he's over & hopefully delegate an SJ. SJ today cleaned one gunky wall of the shower cubicle with bleach & fairy plus a spin scrubber. Will do another wall tomorrow.

throwawayusernamefornow · 09/01/2026 19:10

Love this thread!

I cleaned the bread bin, a really simple job but one that we always neglect - it looks lovely and shiny.
My jobs tomorrow are to set up a new dash cam in the car, and maybe clean the bathroom?
On a slightly related note, can anyone recommend some toilet cleaner foam? I’ve seen some advertised they look amazing - drop it in the bowl, it foams up and cleans easily. But haven’t found it in the supermarket yet?!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/01/2026 19:24

Cleaned the bathroom , as in everything off the surfaces , descale the grout , use a brush etc.
Washed all the containers that things go in.
Just need to mop the floor now .

@throwawayusernamefornow
I used Elbow Grease foam , it does make me cough a bit so it's a case of measure , pour it in, then leave the room.
I don't know if it;s in supermarkets but I;ve seen it in B&M

May I recommend, for everyday maintenance of the Eufy roller brush, one of those pet combs that have wider-spaced teeth on one side and closer-spaced ones on the other? It has really made it much easier than the stupid little blue comb thing that comes with the machine.

Sorry, everyday . . . every day???

Are you some sort of domestic goddess?

ChocolateCinderToffee · 09/01/2026 19:29

My house is an utter shithole AGAIN - I've had a complicated week - so I'm spending the weekend scrubbing and chucking out.

This is what crap weather is for.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 09/01/2026 19:31

Raisondeetre · 08/01/2026 18:07

Oh dear. I have never done that and I’ve had it years…😦

You're my kind of person. I generally do it when a bit of cat kibble jams it.

Ha! Not in the slightest! I just meant it's what I use when I can be arsed to get round to cleaning it.

Also: WHERE does all the purple fluff come from? It just never stops.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/01/2026 22:12

We have one of the robot vacuum thingies , it really is an utter pain in the arse

It is programmed to go off round the bedroom. It leaves the bedroom and gets stuck under the wardrobe in the small room .
It cannot cope with the bars bit on the bed legs . We get a constant message that it is stuck somewhere .
It is terrified of sock fluff so just swans over not picking up.
If I run the regular vacuum over , the amount of dust I collect proves what a crock of shit this is .

One of my cats threw up under the bed , luckily mainly biscuits and luckily not the other end , The robot vac scattered it across the carpet , I had to brush it up then clean the bloody vacuum Hmm

No shitty house jobs done today, but I dedicated the whole day to a really shitty work task and got a large chunk done. I hope to have it done entirely by Sunday evening (I set my own hours).
But tomorrow, hooray, the new washing machine will be delivered. Before it comes, I want to make a little more progress on cleaning and decluttering the basement where it goes. I have already cleared the path outside, which was a massive task, and moved things which were in the way, but some more cleaning and putting these things in their new location would be good. I don't want to put a new clean washing machine into what is currently a dusty, dirty space.

ShittyJobCrew · 10/01/2026 07:36

Minimal SJ yesterday- I dropped off a very late Christmas present.

Today will try and clean the windows (demoulded v successfully the other day, but now streaky) and write some thank you cards. Feeling less drive than earlier in the week so will try and just do one job as a minimum and not beat myself up about it. Ultimately that is going to be more successful in the long run isn’t it.

SqueakyDinosaur · 10/01/2026 09:13

Happy New Washing Machine Day to @Ruthietuthie !

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 10/01/2026 12:17

Yesterday I tidied up my art/craft stash.(this is not however, the crochet/fabric stash which is another days sj) and started sorting out the cookbooks which have been in a huge cardboard box in the dining room where they got moved when we had a new kitchen, 18 months ago. They are now on the dining table. I seriously can't ba going through them to sell on WOB, but chazzas dont want them. We've ordered a new bookcase for the ones I want to keep so today I need to sort the corner of doom where they are going. Also need to clean bathroom.But...its fucking freezing. Our house is old and cold and I really want to hunker down and keep warm.

SqueakyDinosaur · 10/01/2026 13:44

I've just cleaned behind the washing machine for the first time since I had the floors sanded and sealed. There was about a kilo of sawdust underneath it. As I was doing it with a feeble little stick hoover, I've also had to wash the filter about twelfty bazillion times.

Next up, hoover rest of the place, decs up in the loft, pick up all the big pots that have fallen over, whether thanks to Ginotti or other causes, water some of the plants. Then feed the birds and then go and do something NICE.

I feel your pain. Took us five years to get an old stone house insulated room by room, under floors, walls, put in new windows, central heating. I wouldn't do the shit jobs in those rooms until a warm day or a fan heater blasting out.

justasking111 · 10/01/2026 14:15

We have an old Henry in the garage just for those sj where a filter is a pita

Extraenergyneeded · 10/01/2026 14:43

Started on the kitchen rather overdue .
Urgently need to clean out fridges too

EducatingArti · 10/01/2026 15:17

Started on sorting the bathroom ( post redecorating after the Great Soil Pipe Saga of 2025). Should be done by the end of the day
Also done a quick but annoying admin list.

Justgivemehotchocolate · 10/01/2026 15:55

Great soil pipe sage? Tell us more 😆

Shitty job day off yesterday but today I cleared the shower plug hole of (long - so can't blame dh) hair.
.The design means you can lift the top off and rummage around and pull out what gets stuck on the little bar across the middle of the hole, but oh blimey, it just kept on coming getting gunkier and gunkier.

Satisfying watching the water finally disappear properly though

Jamfirstest · 10/01/2026 16:11

I’ve put the Xmas decorations away finally!
