One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

I've just cleaned out my Eufy and replaced the filter with a new one, dehaired and washed its roller brush and I can tell you, jobs don't come much more disgusting than this.

SJ indeed.

May I recommend, for everyday maintenance of the Eufy roller brush, one of those pet combs that have wider-spaced teeth on one side and closer-spaced ones on the other? It has really made it much easier than the stupid little blue comb thing that comes with the machine.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 08/01/2026 14:53

Didn't know this was a thing, but I'd started this week. Tuesday bags of stuff for the chazza-goodbye work dresses and cardies. Wednesday sorted the pantry. Today the drawers of doom and spices.(3 jars of cardomon pods) Tomorrow start culling cookbooks and my craft shit. Next week the airing cupboard, more in bedroom.

Emptied the broken shoe cupboard on the landing and brought it downstairs to go to the tip.
Cleaned the muck and dust behind it.
I’ve been putting this off for ages so I’m happy to have got it done.
You might think me odd but I am grieving hard for my beloved dog and this post is getting me doing something at least.

Our cleaner and sons has gone AWOL again. She did this after her last holiday. She'll be back when she needs cash again. It's getting a bit tiresome now. Three weeks AWOL now.

I don't think you at all odd. The grief we feel when a beloved pet dies is so sharp and clear, there's none of the mix of emotions when a relative or friend dies, IME. I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog. You do whatever gets you through.

Finally tackled the bottleneck of washing and putting clothes away. It had been piling up for a while.
I'm also in the middle of sorting out returns - I hate this job as they all seem to have a slightly different process. Returns seem to be my life!

Love this thread.

I'm curious. Why are there so many returns after chr for so many mumsnetters. Did you not like your Christmas presents?

fixingmylife · 08/01/2026 16:11

Not christmas presents actually.

Missingducks · 08/01/2026 18:03

Sorted medicine drawer - threw out out of date c19 tests (expired 2023), made note to buy plasters and paracetamol but have enough ibuprofen to stock our local hospital - obvs convince myself each time it's the other one we need. Replaced medical scissors I had stolen to cut wrapping paper, and safety pins. Tomorrow dog cupboard (bowls, leads, toys, meds).

Oh dear. I have never done that and I’ve had it years…😦

Justgivemehotchocolate · 08/01/2026 18:18

SJ for the day done.
I have tidied up and rearranged some shelves on the landing/in the hallway to make better use of the space but the main stumbling block was a massive box of paperwork from self employment that ended about 10 years ago. Its been sitting there for gathering dust for nearly that long!!!
Its now properly filed and in the loft (I cant bring myself to get rid completely in case of the rare chance i start again)
But I feel liberated. 😁

hottentot · 08/01/2026 18:38

Cleaned under the sink……..finally 😊

Tryonemoretime · 08/01/2026 09:42

@CherryRipe1 Cleaning the shower? The worst bit is the (mouldy?) sealant around the tray. Pull off a long strip of loo paper and place it along the sealant. Squirt it with Milton and press it firmly on to the sealant. Leave overnight. Voila!! Snow white sealant with minimal effort.

Thank you. I've got some stubborn mould on the tray so will give that a go. The walls and grout get brown sludgey stuff on them, I think it's limescale plus something else. I need to find a good shower spray that cuts through this.

So sorry for your loss 🫶🏼. Well done for managing a shitty job when you’re feeling shitty!

Undercovers · 08/01/2026 20:03

Cleared out the freezer although still some surprise meals in there that I couldn't part with. Emptied one box from the house move several years ago. Still two massive cupboards to go but it's progress!

Shittyyear2025 · 08/01/2026 21:29

Last night ended with me removing strip wax from my headboard from before christmas. Don't ask. That'll teach me to clear the kit away STRAIGHT AWAY rather than getting my hair stuck in it every night for a month... Yay for baby oil, though not sure it works on pillowcases.

What a crap day. I made it to the tip before work (sj) then it was mental all day, no lunch break to speak of, got home 12 hours after I left this morning.

Tea made, toilet fixing parts arrived but postponed until tomorrow. Treating myself to an early night. Feel bummed after such a productive week.

I've decorated the hallway all arse about face because it's taking ages. I've got one doorway to heatgun then sand that one and another then paint and third coat the doors and I'm done. That is for tomorrow as I'm on leave.

I started a new job this week but still working notice on my 2nd role at the same time so I'm tired. But I'm so close to the finishing bits.

powershowerforanhour · 08/01/2026 22:01

No SJs today as 12 hour work shift, am tired and can't be arsed. Will get back on the horse tomorrow.

Idontthinkicandothisanymore · 08/01/2026 22:08

N shitty jobs today. Long work day. Took DD to visit DM. Made dinner. Washed up. Vegged in front of TV for an hour with nuts and a beer. Will make up for it tomorrow

LollyWillow · 08/01/2026 23:48

My priority for today was sorting and packing for my weekend away, but, I did put on a new ironing board cover and then did most of the ironing, admittedly not all, but I did do tablecloths and napkins from Christmas and ALL of the clothes. So that's a win.
I'm really sorry for your loss @caramac04It's hard. My cat gave me a fright yesterday and, although she's fine, it made me think and anticipate the future and how hard it will be to loose a constant companion.

hobbledyhoy · 09/01/2026 08:28

I did a huge amount yesterday as was on a roll and no children to distract me.
Today I will be tackling old paperwork in the office - wish me luck. 😵‍💫

JuniorMint14 · 09/01/2026 08:41

@AreThereSomewhereIslands apologies if this has already been asked but what condensation absorbers do you use on your windowsills please? Could really do with something like that!

AreThereSomewhereIslands · 09/01/2026 09:10

@JuniorMint14 - We use these ones:

https://www.robertdyas.co.uk/kontrol-streamline-moisture-trap

Refill bags of Kontrol Krystals are also available in various sizes.

You can get much cheaper ones from Poundstretcher that come with two 500g fabric packs of the absorbent crystals, but their interior design is completely different and the slots in the floor of the top section are far too wide to hold Kontrol Krystals beads so they're basically not refillable or reusable once the two packs of crystals are used up.

JuniorMint14 · 09/01/2026 09:59

@AreThereSomewhereIslands thank you!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 09/01/2026 11:32

Understairs cupboard now rearranged, a few bits of rubbish and one thing in the charity shop bag 🎉 I've also replaced the rope on some of the cat scratching posts (rope was in understairs cupboard) and rehomed a couple of things.

Also made one of my phone calls.

EducatingArti · 09/01/2026 13:46

Very tired today. I've put together a small flat pack cabinet.
Before the end of today I aim to pay a bill for my mum's estate and also take out a load of boxes to the recycling.
