One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Today's task: empty the broken washing machine (which is full of water and clothes) and order the new one. Plus a good clean of the basement where it will go. The basement is AWFUL - extremely dusty, plus we had mice a bit ago, so full of mice droppings, perhaps mice bodies... I am DREADING IT. (I do have some good gloves for this task, but still).
I think the only way to tolerate this is to set a timer and tell myself that I will do, say, 30 minutes and then can stop.
YUCK.

Iwantanapnow · 06/01/2026 12:50

Have just cleared the cupboard under the sink. I have far more cleaning stuff than I thought so will save on shopping for next few months!
I have ordered oven cleaner and washing machine cleaner and will get these things done by end of week.
Next major shitty job is tax return!

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 06/01/2026 12:55

I’ve just done the next shelf in the pantry-cleaned the tins, put manky lids through the dishwasher and washed the shelf.

yesterday I cleaned my bedroom (I do a room a day-damp dust, polishing etc). Today it’s my en-suites turn!

Comicalblackcat · 06/01/2026 13:20

Hi OP, I love this posting it’s given me the urge to get sorted out and it’s working both mentally and physically. I am NOT on instagram so would not have seen it if you hadn’t posted it. I dislike the nastiness that people write no wonder people feel sad. Good luck to you my lovely, I wish you a brilliant and happy year, thank you for giving me smiles.

space99 · 06/01/2026 13:24

Well I am definitely feeling more productive due to this thread and I am not on instagram either. Have written a list of all the shitty jobs that need doing. Sorted and cleaned the freezer and now on to fridge.

I'd paint it while empty. Concrete floor too. That reduces the dust going forward. My friend is having hers tanked, taking down a bit of silly wall that held in the coal once upon a time. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished cellar.

Ruthietuthie · 06/01/2026 13:55

@justasking111, that's a really good idea on the paint. It is honestly disgusting but the washing machine breaking is the only thing that has prompted me to get down there.

Mamma28383 · 06/01/2026 14:01

I’m in. Christmas decorations today - I’ll have to think about what I can fit in around a busier day tomorrow but I have a huge list that doesn’t even cover housework. 🙈

You can seal the floor very quickly.

Painting DS got a guy in with an airless sprayer they'd knocked three rooms into one, plastered the lot. Took him three hours, no paint on windows or doors.

KrazyboutKillian · 06/01/2026 14:30

Scrubbed the en suite ! It has a really awkward door which traps dirt , and it had all been cleaned / bleached and scrubbed
sparkling !

grizzlyoldbear · 06/01/2026 14:35

I am basically running the shitty engine of adult life today.
I just tried to update my bank details on the transport for london website. Naturally I forgot my login details, so that involved a shitty phone call. I've done my accounts for 24-25, I rang my accountant, I read my gas meter and uploaded it to ovo energy. It's been a shitometer of a morning.

I MUST clean my office it’s a dump. I am better when I write my task down then I can cross it off!

goldylock · 06/01/2026 15:53

Today, while waiting for a bagle to toast, I cleaned out spice rack and back of food cupboard.

Somethings stretching back to 2022 🤭

DeathMetalMum · 06/01/2026 16:24

I had my contraceptive implant changed today so my jobs have been more admin related. I have transferred most of the important dates and appointments to the new 2026 diary from my phone. Done the week meal plan but this is a regular job. My broadband is also out of contract however I have researched and waiting until April to renew with contracts going up in price end of March. Also organised a GP appointment for dd.

While I am making dinner shortly I am going to sort a drawer or find something in the kitchen to organise. I will listen to my audio book while I am doing this. I have a 'stocking' from my aunt basically a few nice toiletries and household items eg hand cream, candle, new gloves, handwash that I will also put away and find places for, all things are really useful and will all be used over the next few months.

justasking111 · 06/01/2026 16:34

Cleaned the kitchen window sill over the sink. Removed the clutter. Moved DH new coffee machine across the kitchen to join the kettle and toaster. Found a dish for his pods.

Tidied up all the herbs and spices he uses for cooking. The eejit has three parsley and three thyme jars unopened. He never checks what he's short of just keeps bunging them in a trolley when he shops.

I want to put the slow cooker in the bottom pull out cupboard but it's awash with stuff he pulled out over the Christmas cooking season and is in a muddle. He has collected over the years six stainless steel type water bottles gifted by the kids. They've never been used. They need to go.

EducatingArti · 06/01/2026 16:49

Today I have put in a claim for overpaid tax, reported non collection of recycling to council, done my meter readings and changed to a new utility provider and tidied up after a minor DIY job in the kitchen, oh and booked a service for my car.

I haven’t read the entire thread but OP it’s a bit shitty to take someone else’s idea and literally replicate it on MN. You’ve word for word lifted it from an instagram account. The (British) woman who runs the one shitty job a day account on instagram is building a following and you’ve literally come in and copied it. Ok you’re not making money from it but you could at least gave said you’ve pinched the idea from her.
shitty I’m afraid given how massive MN is.

So the woman you’re referring to (why we need to know she’s British is a mystery to me) is actually doing a ‘proper’ job by becoming an influencer. Her proper job is to record herself doing jobs in her lovely home whilst filming herself whilst the rest of us just get on with the detritus of our everyday lives, sometimes aided by our families, sometimes not. Calling out the OP for starting what is in fact a thread that many of us are loving is your ‘shitty job’ of the day.

Just out of curiosity, why do you (and others on here who’ve read their meters and see it as a shitty job) not get a smart meter? I’ve not needed to read my meter in years and I know how much gas and electric I’ve used at a glance. Am I missing something?

We occasionally get a request to physically read our smart meter by Octopus.

I'm in. Weekdays smaller tasks. Tomorrow am going to clean and tidy out my bedside drawer.

I said she was British to point out that it wasn’t an overseas influencer who wouldn’t be impacted significantly by a replicated thread on mn (a British site). It’s someone who started out doing one shitty job a day before she started her new job and has carried it on because it was successful. She has a day job.
as I have said multiple times it’s just my view and others don’t have to share it. It wasn’t the sentiment that seemed off, it was literally pinching the tagline and everything.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2026 17:09

If she’s put it on instagram it’s fair game. You can’t claim the monopoly on the concept of shitty jobs surely? Plus within 5 minutes there would be hundreds of copycats because that’s what some people do with their lives - just copy people’s posts and throw them out into the ether 🤷‍♀️

my shitty job (SJ ™️) today was running a washing machine cleaner which had to go on the longest hottest cycle. for a task that involved doing literally nothing for 2hrs 55 minutes and literally nothing after that either, I sure had been procrastinating 🤣

Shittyyear2025 · 06/01/2026 17:55

This morning (before WFH) I've repotted some houseplants (compost has been sitting in the hall for a month at least).

DS decided to clean/fumigate his room yesterday so now have a huge washing pile again. Second load on already.

On my lunch break I've attacked the basket of odd socks and random pants and matched 26 pairs. Still got 26 unmatched socks in the basket, bet a few will find friends out of DSs laundry pile!

Did yesterday's ironing the moment I signed off work. Still got tonnes to do on the pile but it's a start. Will put this (and the socks) away before bed.

Ordered a ridiculously cheap part to fix something I'm going to put on eBay later (been sitting in the cupboard for I really don't know how long).

I'm liking the kitchen cupboard sort-outs going on here. I did the worst shelf before Christmas and was horrified with the state of it. I've got 3 more to really get thorough with, will empty one whilst tea is cooking.

Oh me I'll join!

I'm renovating so I've got big and small jobs on the go!

Initially my plan was to cut back a little in the garden but it was snowing so I tried sorting out the garage (again) so the soon to be delivered kitchen can fit in until it's fitted. It didn't go well as I now need plastic storage boxes so the decorations and keep sakes can go into the loft. Sometimes I could just walk away from it all ...

But I've decluttered some of the kitchen and tomorrow with the plastic boxes I'll go back into the garage.

I've been decluttering for years.
