One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Did the online training that I have been putting off for months.
Put away the dish drainer and properly cleaned the sink and draining board.
Went back to work.

DH and I sorted the Futility room shelves, some stuff to go back to garage where it belongs, got rid of some junk, and rearranged what’s on the worktop so it’s easier to make coffee in the fancy machine. It all looks cleaner and neater now, and I’m looking forward to morning coffee tomorrow!

We got a fancy coffee machine. The worktop is now cluttered. I'm going to put the slow cooker into the corner cupboard I've decided.

At a low ebb today so just decluttered one drawer in the upstairs room of doom and had another hour of boring CPD playing in the background whilst doing that and everyday stuff. Not proper SJs but still progress.

justasking111 · 05/01/2026 22:47

I'm listening to old episodes of Cagney and Lacey on my phone while doing these jobs. It helps somehow to have something streaming.

PermanentTemporary · 05/01/2026 22:53

Just to make anyone struggling feel better, it’s taken me 3 days so far to complete one SJ, but there were a lot of bits involved. My documents are all done and in the post.

Next SJ is to reconcile two separate piles of my mum’s financial paperwork, and to work out how to access her nursing home care records which I’ve been trying to do for two months.

Darker · 05/01/2026 23:05

I’m job hunting and applied for one job yesterday and another job today, so I think I will give myself a free pass on other shitty jobs.

Theghostofchristmasarse · 05/01/2026 23:09

First day back at work so only managed work shitty tasks...but I did clean out the fridge and put things back after clearing decorations, which is making me feel better.
Made a shopping list ready for tomorrow and meal planning, tomorrow is food shop and a bit of cooking ahead of some stressy late nights at work and parents evenings where I have about 10 mins break in appointments to make dinner for the kids.

Serenity45 · 05/01/2026 23:30

Great thread thanks OP! I worked today (I'm full time). Still managed to take most Christmas decs down and pack away in cellar (DH did last few bits when I ran out of time). Also changed over throws on 3 sofas (we have a dog), which includes vacuuming all the cushions and a spritz of Febreeze before putting clean throws on and chucking others in to wash. Try to do this weekly, but with being busy/not home as much it has been closer to 3 weeks. Felt very happy! Still on the list are a few kitchen cupboards and the airing cupboard...

Tara220 · 06/01/2026 06:17

Both yesterdays SJ completed, i can now.open the kitchen cupboard without drowning in carrier bags. Todays SJ clean two more kitchen cupboards

Undercovers · 06/01/2026 07:10

Tree and decorations down yesterday. Committing to clearing out the fridge today, it is massively overdue.

Placestogo · 06/01/2026 07:12

I will call my car assurance today to start a claim. Someone ran i to my car in September …

outstanding shitty tasks:
clean oven
clean fridge

SoftBalletShoes · 06/01/2026 07:15

Yes! I want to do one shitty job a day too. My house is in a state thanks to my depression.

user98732 · 06/01/2026 07:17

I haven’t read the entire thread but OP it’s a bit shitty to take someone else’s idea and literally replicate it on MN. You’ve word for word lifted it from an instagram account. The (British) woman who runs the one shitty job a day account on instagram is building a following and you’ve literally come in and copied it. Ok you’re not making money from it but you could at least gave said you’ve pinched the idea from her.
shitty I’m afraid given how massive MN is.

beigeybeige · 06/01/2026 08:25

I don’t think anyone on Instagram or MN or anywhere else could claim that they invented the idea of breaking up things we don’t want to do into small chunks to make them more approachable. Not an original invention because it’s just common sense.

Good luck to anyone making a successful business out of it, that’s great. but that’s through their personality (which nobody can take away from them) and not because they’ve had an original idea in this.

No but the instagram account is literally “one shitty job a day”
it’s just shitty to do this to someone on a forum as big as MN. It could at least have been the same concept but a different name but it’s a blatant copy.
Anyway that’s just my view.

Sitoff · 06/01/2026 09:08

Yesterday listed some items that have been at the back of a drawer since the early 2000s waiting for me to sell them. Received payment and posted out. (Last Christmas return dispatched too.)

EducatingArti · 06/01/2026 09:34

I was out all day yesterday but back to do a few more sj's today! Still in bed at the moment though! I do have an illness that causes chronic fatigue so I have to pace myself!

Our understairs cupboard I dread tackling.

Me too. I have to bag surf to reach the meter cupboard.

Bingo.

Always one contrarian.

I have frequently submitted mine on the very last day!

space99 · 06/01/2026 11:53

I’m in. Have so many terrible shitty jobs that I constantly put off. Today I will sort out and clean the fridge freezer. Tomorrow will sort out the underbed storage.

Hey, I don't want to step on anyone's toes. I did say I'd seen a video about it at the start of my first post - I'm not trying to take anything from anyone and bravo to that Instagram lady for doing it.

I wanted to give myself a kick up the arse more than anything after nearly a year of stuff piling up due to illness and general life crap (and 40 more years on top of habitual procrastination and mess-blindness), and I've achieved more in 5 days being accountable here than I have in the last 8 months - it reads like lots of other folk have too.

Do you have a link to that Instagram account?

Can I join in please? Just filed, shredded and recycled bags of paperwork. Oven needs a clean, I hate doing jobs like that but it's pyrolitic so self cleaning in theory but I'm a bit worried about turning it up so high for 2 hours, smoke etc, however it's probably the right weather to do it. Need to bite the bullet. Finally chose a paint colour for the spare room after much umming and ahhhing, deliberation & paint samples & managed to delegate the collection of it to my partner today. Been storing a load of stuff for a friend for years & she's finally made arrangements to collect it tomorrow freeing up space in my cupboards, wardrobe base & under bed storage yay! Lots of shitty jobs to tackle in 2026. The one a day method is great and motivational. We keep on keeping on

No, nothing to do with me. I just thought it was a bit off when someone is trying to build a following. Appreciate others disagree
