One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

Feeling really motivated but need to remember it’s a marathon not a sprint, or I will burn through my enthusiasm.

Today I sorted some paperwork, took some old work uniforms back in, cleaned my bedroom lights and dusted on top of 2 wardrobes and a bathroom cabinet (they were rank!) I also sorted my understairs cupboard.

Enough for today and dinner then bed!

Oh me I'll join!

I'm renovating so I've got big and small jobs on the go!

Initially my plan was to cut back a little in the garden but it was snowing so I tried sorting out the garage (again) so the soon to be delivered kitchen can fit in until it's fitted. It didn't go well as I now need plastic storage boxes so the decorations and keep sakes can go into the loft. Sometimes I could just walk away from it all ...

But I've decluttered some of the kitchen and tomorrow with the plastic boxes I'll go back into the garage.

I've been decluttering for years.

I know that feeling

My SJ for today was going to the most horrible of the local hospitals to get my hands x-rayed (arthritic thumbs). It was an absolute pain in the arse, all the parking machines were broken, it's a hike from the car park because it's one of those designs where vehicles were always considered before people, etc etc. The staff were lovely though and I was in and out very quickly. Now I wait for the musculo-skeletal team to get back to me with a plan of action (which I don't want. All I want is the steroid injections that manage the pain, especially when it's this cold, and which I have now been waiting for for 5 months).

But yes, there's a sense of satisfaction in having ticked off that item on the list. And the day before I submitted my outstanding invoices to the company I work for as a contractor. So that was good too.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 06/01/2026 19:57

@user98732 why does it matter if someone on instagram is trying "to build a following"? I couldn't care less.

Decluttering, or stopping procrastinating, or getting jobs finally done, is not a new concept. The instagram woman doesn't own the word "shitty", it's a very commonly used word. Who cares what she's doing? I'm not on instagram so don't give a fuck, but I am on MN everyday so I actually appreciate accountability threads like these.

Tree and decorations down yesterday. Committing to clearing out the fridge today, it is massively overdue.

Didn't manage this so bumping it to tomorrow. Did clean out a corner with a bag of presents from last year and put a few clothing items in the charity bag. Both been annoying me for months.

powershowerforanhour · 06/01/2026 20:24

Only did an hour of CPD and nothing else SJ wide but oh well. I'll try something tomorrow

RedFatball · 06/01/2026 20:31

Full day of my shitty job today. Then yoga so I've only done a little shitty job of loading the car with shit to go to the tip. I won't make it until the weekend (due to the shitty full time job) but it will make it easier when I do go on Saturday first thing!

Tomorrow is a load of laundry in the morning (not really shitty as it has to be done most days) and 15min on the Corner of Doom...

I am basically running the shitty engine of adult life today.
I just tried to update my bank details on the transport for london website. Naturally I forgot my login details, so that involved a shitty phone call. I've done my accounts for 24-25, I rang my accountant, I read my gas meter and uploaded it to ovo energy. It's been a shitometer of a morning.

Shitometre 😂😂😂😂😂

beigeybeige · 06/01/2026 21:00

Urrrggghhhh the shittyness of the tax return. Nightnare! Sympathies all round fellow sufferers.

Also it sounds like lots of us aren’t very well on the thread, so shitloads of Flowers all round as well.

I did a small amount of tax return. I may in fact be procrastinating by writing this..

FindingMeno · 06/01/2026 21:03

Spent a long time attempting an admin type shitty job today. Got bounced around from one place to another and didn't actually get it sorted out. Grrr.
This is why SJ's get avoided so much.
I don't understand why so many things need to be tackled so many times nowadays before anything is resolved 🤬

You don't want plastic boxes, you need these

Ruthietuthie · 06/01/2026 22:13

Well, today I managed to get the car cleaned - which really needed doing, AND buy the new washing machine. It will be delivered on Saturday, fingers crossed (I hope it is Saturday, or I will have to do a launderette trip) which gives me until then to clear and clean the basement room. I can do it, but I am dreading it - so many cobwebs, thick dust, and probably mouse skeletons and poo... YUCK.

justasking111 · 06/01/2026 22:19

Re the tax return I had surgery at the end of October which meant I couldn't sit at the desk for a few weeks so I panicked at the beginning of October and did mine. Shouted at DH to pull his finger out go through all his banking so I could marry up paperwork to income and outgoings. Got it all done pre surgery. Now I stare at that ugly brown envelope knowing that I have to hand over money by the end of the month. It's not even income I've got to enjoy 😭

WorriedAboutArthur · 07/01/2026 03:20

I’m a few days late to the party, but I’m in! I am the same as you - living in clutter I don’t see (until I am overstimulated and then it annoys the hell out of me!). No idea what I’ll start with because there are so many 🙈.

3flyingducksarrive · 07/01/2026 03:34

Took down the tree and asked DH to put it in its box. He said no as there is a ringtail possum asleep in the box.

Today I need to sort out my bedside table and one of the drawers of doom in my office.

Just out of curiosity, why do you (and others on here who’ve read their meters and see it as a shitty job) not get a smart meter? I’ve not needed to read my meter in years and I know how much gas and electric I’ve used at a glance. Am I missing something?

I'm in an upper floor flat. The gas meter is in the flat but the electricity meter is on the ground floor in a cupboard. I do have smart meters but the distance is too great for them to talk to each other. The electricity meter does send readings to the utility company but it can't pick up the gas meter readings to send those too so I have to do them manually and it is a complete pain!

ShittyJobCrew · 07/01/2026 08:21

Not feeling particularly energetic today so small ones I think.

Normal jobs: I’ve just cleaned the coffee machine, done dishwasher and sorted out laundry. I’ll try and put a couple of loads away too.

SJs: cooker hood and fridge I think! I’ve got online lectures this am so can try then. I’m really doing that to put off a few emails so actually I’ll try to do less cleaning and more computer admin.

Small jobs is good - I've got a load of dishcloths, cleaning rags and dusters in the wash at the moment - the sort of shitty job that is never quite big enough to be objectively bothered by, but once done I don't have to even consider rummaging for a clean cloth next time I'm being a domestic goddess...

I finally put all the clean, ironed washing away, though the socks are still on the table. At lunch today I'm going to put some bits in the car to take to the tip on the way to work tomorrow. Bin day as well tomorrow so good chance to empty and clean all the house bins (and de-crud that manky cupboard under the sink).

I'm waiting for the postman to bring me some bank statements so I can get busy with some admin for a group I support - a shitty but necessary job that piles up quite quickly. Have a few months outstanding and need to get it off my radar.

I’m in! Every year I buy a new journal at the start of Jan and one of the first things that goes in it is the Shitty Jobs List which I then try to work through during Spring. Did that at the weekend, and it’s a very long list this time… Will be good to have this thread for company/motivation along the way.

Re the Instagrammer, the fact that someone is sharing their own Shitty Jobs to their social media account doesn’t mean the phrase is now somehow trademarked or give her any kind of monopoly over the subject. Imagine if we couldn’t have threads dedicated to decluttering, or cleaning, or weight loss, or getting fit because someone had talked about it on their socials! There would be nothing left.

Besides which, I’ve just done a search so I could follow them for more motivation, and nothing came up that was actually dedicated to Shitty Jobs. Only thing I could find was a normal account where posts about accomplishing shitty jobs feature in amongst other day to day things. Didn’t bother following.

justasking111 · 07/01/2026 12:50

I gave the bathroom a deep clean. Mould loves growing on the windowsill in cold weather. Did it all before xmas too. It smells lovely using th linen fresh wipes. Put th dry washing away. Im pooped now my hip is screaming today, so im done

randos · 07/01/2026 13:38

I’m following the thread, hoping to join, but so far I’ve tackled zero SJs.
The issue is, I have a big, important, thing I need to do, and I feel guilty if I start anything else, no matter how small. Of course, I am too overwhelmed to do anything about the big task too. 😤

PelucheCat · 07/01/2026 13:42

Inspired. Hate it but I'm going to clean out the budgies.

WorriedAboutArthur · 07/01/2026 14:54

I’ve managed 3 SJs today - 1. take down outdoor Christmas lights. 2. Dismantle Christmas wreath (I keep the base to reuse each year) and 3. Put Christmas decs in the loft.
I’ve made a start on sorting the small bedroom of doom and have 1 bin bag for the tip an I’ve uploaded a few bits to Vinted. Hoping my motivation continues at this rate 🤞🏼. Every SJ I think of is being added to a list on my notes app.

Can you break it into smaller less daunting bits?
