Do we need titles Miss/Ms/Mrs/Mr etc?

Do we still need these? Does anyone know what the purpose is?

I've just been asked by the TV license people and it's made me wonder if it's necessary anymore (the title, not the TV license).

I think I'd be happy to go without.

My DC's headteacher's said "oh do call me Andrew/Jane". So of course I said "do call me Roses".

@Parker231, I suspect you are an outlier there. My wedding ring is very important to me and and I never take it off, despite wearing little jewellery generally.

I don’t wear a ring either. When dh and I discussed it I said I didn’t want one, but I’d wear one if he did.

he also chose not to. So we don’t have rings, which I am very happy about.

i like that I have no external signifiers of marriage. No ring, no Mrs, no name change.

My business, no one else’s.

Just as for many, they chose to wear a ring. Actually, as part of a church service, I'm not sure it is a choice. The reason mine is so precious is because of the spiritualoty of the vows and blessing of the rings. It was profound. But that's just me. Nearly 35 years ago, I didn't question becoming Mrs. I was happy to and if titles.are being used that is mine.

I’m an atheist so wasn’t married in a church. I like jewellery and have some amazing earrings but just don’t like any rings. DH didn’t want a wedding ring either so very straightforward for us.

I didn’t change my surname when we got married and DT’s are double barrelled - very long and neither part of their surname is English so lots of spelling out but they are proud their surname represents both sides of the family. Both DT’s also have non English forenames so more spelling out but both use a nickname. As neither now live in an English speaking country, it’s less of a problem.

It is a choice in a church service. You just skip the exchanging rings part of the ceremony.

I didn't know that.

Each to their own however.

What happens if there is a Mr Alex Smith and a Mr Arthur Smith at the same address? If a letter arrives for Mr A Smith, how do they know which one it's for?

That's where initials from second names come in handy.

Normally if it is the same, then that's the fault with the parents when naming their children. I have come across parents whose child shares exactly the name at the same address and that has caused major problems all round.

Way back when, I used to add a spurious middle initial as a way to track who was selling on my data (despite lies to the contrary).

It's trivial now with email addresses.
