Does anyone still support this Labour government?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 28/12/2025 12:24

I know NO ONE in real life who still sticks up for them (apart from my mother, and she would support Labour even if KS owned up to creating Covid). Apart from that, all quiet on the western front.

I haven’t seen any support on here, or SM for weeks now.

Is it my algorithm bubble, or are people genuinely disappointed with them? I don’t think it can be the algorithms though, as until a few weeks ago there were still words of support popping up.

For full disclosure I think this government is a total shitshow intent on dismantling British culture, and taxing the private sector to death in order to pay for the public sector. With no long term plan once the private sector is squeezed totally dry. I am BEYOND disappointed with them.

Some seem to on here still to but generally it’s pretty low.

patooties · 28/12/2025 12:55

Yup

HappiestSleeping · 28/12/2025 12:55

I think they are the least worst of the options, which is a fairly dire situation to be in.

Looking at their manifesto, and how they are doing against it, it isn't as bad as the media would have us believe:

Depends what is important to each of us as individuals. As someone said above, the country was in the toilet after the Conservative government, so it would have been hard for anyone to have resolved many of the issues. Labour shot themselves in the foot by making promises about tax and what not that they would never be able to keep.

Full Fact is monitoring the government’s delivery on its promises

They have got us back into Erasmus, are looking at working with rather than against the EU, have sped up and increased deportations of illegal migrants, scrapped the pointless and expensive Rwanda plan, they are going after the people who defrauded the Covid payments scheme to get the money back, they are pulling a huge number of children and families out of poverty which will have longer term implications on health and therefore the economy.

I believe they scrapped the ban on onshore wind turbines with possibly a few more actions that encouraged investment in green renewables. They have given water regulators more powers to deal with the water companies but I’m not sure how much that has had an effect yet.

Personally, I’m a big fan of the number of potholes that have been fixed here and some of the improvements to local bus services that have been made.

They aren’t perfect and more could have been done - Starmer has a huge majority and could be less cautious and just get on with a few things - but it’s a damn sight more that the Tories did in 14 years. They are being held to a much higher standard.

Also, I should specify that it sounds like you and I are coming from very different positions, OP. I agree with @worstnotholiday - I’m ashamed of Labour for being flip floppers, and trying to please everyone so they please no one. But no, I’m not upset because they’re “dismantling British culture.” What does that even mean?!? What British culture? UK British? West Indian British? Caribbean British? Indian British? My dear MIL, who is now Italian British (got her UK citizenship this year)? The whole phrase “dismantling British culture” sounds like a Reform-esque, racist dog-whistle. This is why I’d never vote for Reform, even though I’m angry with Labour for being such spineless plods. When your options are Keir Starmer and Nigel Farage, you know you’ve been fucked by somebody.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/12/2025 12:57

The problem is how they are continuously attacked in media for every single thing.

The country is bankrupt. What are they supposed to do after 14 years of underinvestment.

They are doing some good stuff. But it never gets mentioned.

Tryagain26 · 28/12/2025 12:57

I do.
They have actually improved things a lot in the 18 months they have been on office ..
Of course they are not perfect and they get a lot of negative press because they are Labour. It was ever this sadly. But the alternative would have been a lot worse

LarkspurLane · 28/12/2025 13:02

Quietly working at reversing the damage of Brexit, I like that.

Of course, the right wing media are against them and a lot of people fall for that (and of course, a lot of people are right wing).

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/12/2025 13:03

Anything good that they have done is ignored on SM and the gutter press. Sadly most people take this as gospel and only see the 'illegals' as important. As for destroying rural life - the majority of us are not millionaire farmers and hunt lovers.
Blame brexit and the death of the Dublin agreement for the rise in 'boat people'. Yes, there has been flip flopping and not enough left wing policies but there has been some good. Changes to zero hour contracts, ending no fault evictions, the two child benefit cap, free breakfasts for
kids - just to name a few off the top of my head.
Am I happy with them - no.
Do I realise that there is a global issue - yes
Would I vote for them again - I will vote tactically to keep reform out
Do I research and not rely on SM - yes

Constantly welcoming extremist anti-British extremists.

Doing nothing to stop the channel crossings.

Doing nothing to promote British culture (they are ashamed of it, rather).

Sowing division and creating class wars.

And not least, their all-out war on rural Britain.

Except that none of these things are true. It’s all spin from the media and the right wing mouth pieces.

You may have been better off not answering that question if you didn’t want to advertise your purpose in starting this thread though.

YorkshirePuddingsS · 28/12/2025 13:05

Yes I support them

Fluffyholeysocks · 28/12/2025 13:05

We vote in a Labour Government every few years just to remind ourselves why we should never vote in a Labour Government.

ffsnewusername · 28/12/2025 13:06

No, and I was a life long Labour supporter. This government is a huge disappointment for me, and I wish I could take back my vote.

Justmadesourkraut · 28/12/2025 13:11

plinkyplonk123 · 28/12/2025 12:30

I mean they’re better than the Tories although it seems that every piece of media would show Keir Starmer as being worse than Truss the Lettuce

This surely says more about the press and their subsequent shaping of opinion. The Internet exists and allows us a window on the recent past. It's good to rewatch Truss's few speeches as PM to remind yourself how bed she really was. (And Boris).

Like other posters, I am immensely grateful to not have to wake up to footage of the Stories or Farage & co. Labour haven't been exciting, but I'm sure that you can measure in millions the amounts that are not being syphoned off into cronies pockets/ funding duck houses/whatever else the entitled ones felt it was ok to spend on.

notsure75 · 28/12/2025 13:11

I still support the Labour government. Don't envy them at all, it's a really difficult job they have to repair the hollowed out public services without damaging the economy and attempt to resolve the societal problems because there's largely no money left after the 2008 crisis, pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Self harming Brexit didn't help either. Plus the population is becoming older and sicker, needs more public services such as NHS and more money for pensions. No easy solutions here. Anyone suggesting there are are either lying or are economically illiterate. The social media and right wing press are constantly churning out anti government messaging and I am worried about Reform gaining power. I don't believe in the Green's money tree either. I hope things will improve by the next elections but with the risks outside UK's control including the state of world economy and war in Europe the future is very uncertain.

It’s not untrue. The last point especially. As a farmers wife who works in the NHS I am pretty well placed for a front row view of various fuck ups.

And no, farmer doesn’t = rich.

No they are a bag of shit. There are no one group I support really but am leaning towards one!

EatShitDel · 28/12/2025 13:12

"What’s wrong with that reason?"
@Clockyclockz

Because the British public deserve better than having to choose between 'bad' and 'even worse'. I mean, what's RIGHT with that?

Of course not. Some are just immune to Labour’s policies but there’s plenty of stress, livelihood and job loss.

It's always "done nothing ' with the small boat crossings. What exactly do people want to see happen?

The Rwanda plan would have deterred all criminals and chancers, and seen boats stopped overnight.

And no, im not a Tory. I’m also now party less.

The Rwanda plan was a scheme was a plan to move money from the U.K. government to the Rwandan government while convincing some of the U.K. population that it was doing something to deter people crossing in small boats. It did nothing to deter people crossing, nor would it ever have done.

They had the capacity to take one boat load of people per year and had no intention of keeping track of the people they took. They Rwandan government had sold the accommodation they built with the money to Rwandans long before the Labour government got in.

Clockyclockz · 28/12/2025 13:16

@EatShitDel where did I say we didn’t deserve better? But this is the system we have or has it changed?

SumUp · 28/12/2025 13:17

gamerchick · 28/12/2025 12:44

I don't think any party could have fixed the mess the country is in. Especially it immediately which is what people were expecting.

Problem is, people are thick. They can't link events to why shit life is now.

It's always "done nothing ' with the small boat crossings. What exactly do people want to see happen? Blow them up like the US?

This.

And people ARE generally thick. So sick of people.

blankcanvas3 · 28/12/2025 13:17

Anybody I know (including me) who would usually vote Labour voted Green last election, and will do so in the next election unless there’s a drastic change. They’re not left enough for lefties, and they’re not right enough for right wingers. I suppose they would cater for centrists but I don’t think I know anybody who is in the centre of the political spectrum anymore, only right and left.

Clockyclockz · 28/12/2025 13:18

I live rurally, I’ve no idea why you would assume that I think farmer = rich.
