If you don't need to know them well before a hook up I'd just go out on my own, hang round a reasonably busy bar and you can say your friend is running late then she can cancel or need you to go to her as required.

If you want to know them a bit it'll have to be OLD. People you know may see you but they won't know what you're doing and you can tell them whatever you like.

If you're not looking for a relationship a younger man might be better, and he's less likely to be married with kids.

What's your concern about having your picture on the dating apps? Could you use a contraction of your name and pictures of you but block your face out and explain why in your profile and offer to send a photo before you meet? Otherwise I would assume you need to go to a pub or club on your own, smile a lot and chat to strangers?
