@lifeonmars100 same, and how the catchphrases were adopted by everyone so boring, I still hear people say ‘Computer Sez No’ and yeah but no but yeah but no’ even now 🤬
and one thing sticks in my mind is Anne with a pile of poo smearing it, absolutely awful and really immature.

PerkingFaintly · 21/12/2025 11:26

In fact if anyone is interested there's a recent ITV programme about the phone-hacking scandal in which the machinations of the Murdoch media and Rebekah Brooks have a starring role.

Other newspapers were at it, of course, but it was NOTW which got caught setting a PI on a police officer while he was investigating the murder of Daniel Morgan.

Still available on catch-up:
https://www.itv.com/watch/the-hack/10a3293

It's convoluted to follow, and features very good acting but very bad wigs. Still worth a watch though.

By the way, Hi to any MNers from that time! We lived through all this together... Do you remember when JustineMumsnet ended up on Newsnight or somewhere being asked whether it was MN wot brought down NOTW?!

Yes I was told this by a doctor in his 50s, our clinical director in the NHS. We were being audited and (as a 24 year old who got the job due postgraduate qualifications and very relevant experience) I was pulled to the side and told the rest of the team (all men) thought it might help our case if I wore something skimpy. THIS WAS 2009!!!!

How awful, I was young in the 70's and 80's and it was vile then, I remember being part of a work thing that got photograhed and the male photographer saying he wanted some "cleavage shots" it was out of order then and us girls and women called him out (took a bit of nerve) . It makes me rage to think of the way hardly anything has changed. Things are called out a lot more but in many ways the behaviour seems even more gross now

I have also heard that he gave his childhood diaries to said publisher for his memoir and they revealed he lost his virginity to his sister. Not only is that all over the internet I also heard it from someone who worked there.

unfortunately another name also came up - Russell Brand (this was about 8 years ago) and that it all came to a head.

one more that is yet to break - David Jason apparently. The women at the publishers were told to wear short skirts when he was in.

allegedly to all of the above for the lawyers!

Please think before you post things like this. His sister is a human being, not famous and has no right of reply. Imagine if it was you someone was speculating about on the internet.

oh god, I never saw that, must have given up watching it by then as it got less and less amusing and more nasty

Daily Mail is dishing out the dirt but it's subscriber only:

'He thought he was untouchable': Insiders tell KATIE HIND why David Walliams is 'despised'... and the women who are saying it's time he faced the music

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-15400303/untouchable-David-Walliams-women-KATIE-HIND.html

They aren’t allowing my comments on this story, they aren’t defamatory or anything just putting the women’s view. The only comments seemingly fit for publication are those saying ‘what’s a court found him guilty of?’ Or ‘it’s just banter, women should suck it up’ 🙄🙄🙄

Interesting that the Mail online have published a story about one of the other rumoured dangers this morning. That won’t have been a coincidence. Whether it’s teasing another story or click bait remains to be seen.

Yes, I saw the thumbnail when reading the DW comments! One of the DM’s signature moves.

But they are really screening the DW comments (none of mine have been allowed and someone has put a comment on another unrelated story saying ‘why are the DW comments only showing supportive ones?’), but DJ they are allowing comments about his handsymess.

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/12/2025 13:19

@BlackBeltInOrigami aaaah i wasn’t aware that was possible so explains all the ‘snowflakes are at it again’ etc etc comments.

I wonder if he’s reading anything from his £5k a night Maldive hotel.

Tbh it makes me wonder if it was actually consensual considering he is such a creep anyway. His poor sister if that is the case.

That Times link did not work for me so I looked up some academic research into sibling child sexual abuse.

I have a personal history involving sibling child sexual abuse in my family. It's very hard to read anything detailed regarding the abuse, and in my family it happened many decades ago and I was not directly involved.

Just wanted to say that child sexual abuse can never be consensual. Also the research indicated that the abuse often happened when there was "family stress" but also could occur when there was no family stress - but the papers examined for the study constituted 91 published papers over a period of 40 years, which is hardly anything really. This area is very underresearched.

Tell that to the whole of Reddit! It’s a known secret.

re if it’s DT the doctor then I am surprised but not shocked. Ever since I saw him wear that horrible t shirt calling people (let’s face ir - women) who don’t agree with puberty blockers for children “freaks” I’ve really gone off him.

OH he's a real prince charming I suspect. His in-laws weren't happy I seem to recall when his girlfriend got pregnant.

I and my sister are survivors of sibling child sex abuse (our brother) and it has messed both of us up. For decades I put it away in a mental box and only spoke about it when I was seeing a clinical psychologist about another very recent trauma in my adult life. She got me to do a timeline, and I spoke about then. She diagnosed me with CPTSD due to a myriad of events in my life up to and including the thing I was seeing her for. When the sibling stuff happened it was in the 60's and even if we had told (at the time neither of us know it was happening to the other) I very much doubt that we would have been believed especially as our dad was an abuser too, though his was through vouyersim and verbal stuff. I only found out that it happened to my sister decades later, and what really helps it that each of us totally believes and supports the other. I know that things are very far from pefect these days but I am glad that there is more openess and support for any child going through this

ZoeCM · 21/12/2025 15:40

Sean Lock was right on the money with the "pink minstrel" comment. (And he had Russell Brand's number too.)

There was a band in the mid-2010s called PWR BTTM, who were promoted as "unapologetically queer". They split up because of several accusations that one of the members (a male "they/them") had sexually assaulted women. The whole "queer" thing was apparently a way to lower women's boundaries. I wonder if David Walliams's camp persona was a similar deal.

ZoeCM · 21/12/2025 16:06

Mropalsmusic · 21/12/2025 09:50

Unfortunately it’s often “trial by media” that forces organisations to actually act and root out the men (or women) behaving badly. HarperCollins and the rest would’ve let this go on if they could avoid the bad publicity coming his/their way.

Yes. It's awful, because there's always the chance that innocent people will end up being hounded or even having their lives ruined. But unfortunately the institutions that are supposed to put a stop to this behaviour - whether it's HarperCollins, the BBC, the Catholic Church, or in Savile's case even the police themselves - cover it up instead. Putting Jimmy Savile on "trial by media" before his death would probably have been the only way to get the truth out during his lifetime.

I’d be interested if anyone has links to articles discussing how some men take advantage of the lower behavioural boundaries or expectations that many women automatically extend to men they assume or know to be gay or “queer”. It seems that the basic protective instincts women may maintain for themselves or their children around straight men often disappear in these cases, or that the threshold for what counts as odd behaviour or boundary-pushing becomes much higher.

This came to mind again in the recent thread asking whether posters would accept a male midwife. A couple of posters mentioned that their male midwife was gay. Full stop. As if that fact alone eliminated any possibility of abuse.

Sorry to hear about what you've been through.

When I said truly consensual I meant that according to the rumour that he thought it was a "funny story" that he slept with his sister and the fact that he is a massive creep anyway means that I think his sister was most likely (allegedly!) abused by him if the rumour is indeed true.

But yes I get what you mean in that sibling on sibling sexual abuse can never be truly consensual as there is usually something else going on in the background as well as a power imbalance.

I used to work in mental health services and used to support someone who did this to his sister. He didnt know we all knew. He had a psychotic breakdown and we all thought he couldnt cope with the fact but no one wanted to talk about it for fear it would make it worse. There was clearly a lot of abuse in their childhood. It was all so odd though as no one ever talked about it but everyone knew. The family would still meet up for Sunday lunch every week.
(the sister was seriously struggling thoguh and having support externally but god - messed up).
