I am looking to take up something in the new year that I can from the comfort of my sofa that will replace staring at a screen.
I already read, listen to music and go to the gym.
Anyone want to share their off screen hobby?

Knitting and cross stitching - I have enough stash for each to last till I’m 500!

Whaleandsnail6 · 16/12/2025 17:06

Cross stitch and I've just rediscovered an enjoyment of jigsaws since getting an advent one. I either have a podcast or tv on in the background

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/12/2025 17:16

Knitting - I do a lot for a particular charity, so while I do really enjoy it and use it as an excuse to avoid housework (all the items are badly needed) I can tell myself that at least I’m doing something useful.

Adult colouring books.

Me too, what sort of stuff do you colour?

Firawla · 16/12/2025 17:17

Adult colouring is so relaxing, I also really like jigsaws, mobile games, reading on the kindle (get the app fable to track your reads), learning languages on Duolingo

I colour, knit, crotchet and cross stitch ☺️

I colour and do jigsaws.

Same, particularly in the winter months when I'm indoors more.

In 2026 I'm planning to get pretty darned proficient in crochet & make a pretty bedspread. I'm currently in the incredibly novice category so it's going to be interesting to aim so high.

PodMom · 16/12/2025 17:31

I’m teaching myself watercolour painting via youtube, tiktok and some books. Admittedly not from the sofa, but I started on the dining room table and have now bought myself a little “art desk”. Find it really relaxing

There are some lovely 'crochet along' blanket patterns which are kind of like a sampler where the designer releases the pattern chunk by chunk, sometimes with videos showing you how to do the stitches used in each part. I made this one when I was pretty much a beginner crocheter. https://www.google.com/amp/s/coastalcrochet.com/2018/01/19/this-is-exciting-im-hosting-a-crochet-along-part-1/amp/

Seaside Stash Busting blanket – Week 1 (This is exciting – I’m hosting a ‘Crochet Along’)!

Welcome to my ‘Seaside Stash Busting Blanket’… a 35 week Crochet Along which I hosted here on my blog throughout 2018. The first original ‘Week 1’ blog post remains below and all …

I do diamond painting, though not on the sofa. I sit at the table with the radio on in the background.

I started with doing lots of their stock pictures (first two examples). I now mainly work from photos (last example). Mostly requests from people for their pets, both past and present. I love seeing them come to life as more drills are added. And everyone has loved the end result.

English Paper Piecing patchwork. It's the best.

Mummysusername · 16/12/2025 18:25

i love cross stitching in an evening on the sofa in front of the tv. I have been making Christmas stockings for my family

SilverPink · 16/12/2025 18:55

Jigsaws, reading, adult colouring. I’m also partial to a few games of Solitaire with an actual pack of cards.

SwallowsandAmazonians · 16/12/2025 19:23

Intrigued by this diamond art thing, never heard of it, how does it work? From a quick Google it looks a bit like those Hama beads, but for adults?

I replied before to say I paint, but as a beginner would recommend watercolour not oils. Get some metallic ones too, they are really fun.

DesiccatedCoconut · 16/12/2025 19:41

Knitting has been life-changing for me. It's so satisfying and engaging while also being relaxing - the repetitive motion of it is so soothing and regulating. Very therapeutic and fun.

redluckycat · 16/12/2025 19:44

Cross stitch and occasionally painting by numbers, jigsaws and colouring. I find cross stitch incredibly relaxing.

Wildywondrous · 16/12/2025 19:45

Crochet.
It's very easy and you can make blankets, clothes, toys, scarves.

I've only been doing it for just over a year and have several blankets.
Have a look at mosaic crochet, they designs are endless.
I'm currently about to finish my 4th Christmas themed one.

I listen to audio books or podcasts at the same time and the evenings fly by

NutellasKitchen · 16/12/2025 19:51

Play the ukelele? You can practice even when you're tucked up in bed, which in my book makes it a winner.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/12/2025 19:53

I love crafty stuff but struggle in the evening with the light. I would love to find something to do that doesn't involve really close work.

WhoamItoday11 · 16/12/2025 19:57

I've started doing my own gel nails. It takes ages... 2 to 3 hours if I have to remove the polish.

PickAChew · 16/12/2025 19:58

I do knit but not often. I've fallen back into embroidery, recently - both in the hoop and with felt. I treated myself to a Corinne Lapierre advent calendar. So far, I'm halfway through stitching day 4 😂 (I've been giving my attention to some small felt ornaments and some garment sewing so not had time)

spanieleyes · 16/12/2025 20:01

Diamond painting, I now have a houseful! There are so many designs to choose from, I even did a wedding portrait for my son and daughter in law from their favourite photo.
Adult colour by number books, a bit mindless but quite satisfying and cheap enough to throw away once finished, I also spend quite some time sorting and re-sorting coloured pens and pencils, which is quite therapeutic
Crossstitch, which I do in fits and starts
Latch hook rugs, therapeutic and useful
Knitting occasionally
