Hobbies for the evening from home

I am looking to take up something in the new year that I can from the comfort of my sofa that will replace staring at a screen.
I already read, listen to music and go to the gym.
Anyone want to share their off screen hobby?

Intrigued by this diamond art thing, never heard of it, how does it work? From a quick Google it looks a bit like those Hama beads, but for adults?

I replied before to say I paint, but as a beginner would recommend watercolour not oils. Get some metallic ones too, they are really fun.

I’m a fan. It’s a bit like printed cross stitch in that you get a canvas with various symbols for different colours. The canvas is sticky and the diamond drills stick to it. You just start in one corner and work your way across! Once finished, you seal it and then frame. There are also lots of little kits you can make for short term projects, I have made some lovely mosaic coasters which I find handy and simple to do.

If you already, read, listen to music and go to the gym, why do you need more hobbies? What is wrong with relaxing and enjoying a good TV programme for an hour or two? But if you really want to find something what about knitting, yoga, meditation or relaxation techniques, cooking, baking, doing an online course of some kind? During the summer months we like to go for a walk sometimes in the evening too.

knottywig · 16/12/2025 20:09

Crochet, cross stitch or long stitch or tapestry or crewel, needle felting, macramé, sashiko, Linoprint ( though invest in decent tools if you like it), copper foil stained glass window, air drying clay, paper quilling. Are you near a local college or library or council that run courses, be it evening or just a day courses- give you an insight into things that may interest you. Hobbycraft used to do taster sessions if there is one near you. Look on Eventbrite for craft days near you.

Put my photographs into printed photobooks.

Hammy19 · 16/12/2025 20:29

Jigsaws, family tree, local history and lego!

IceBrownie · 16/12/2025 20:35

We have a communal gigantic jigsaw on the go at all times. Everyone stops for a little glance and once they realised it's been 2 hours!

It's also particularly enjoyable when paired with an audiobook.

Air dry clay. Check tick took ideas. Delightful and whimsical.

Sketching + watercolour

Adult boardgames. There are incredible games these days for every type of personality - lots of intricate two player games. DH and I love them.

Digital scrapbooking. Don't even need to leave the armchair/sofa.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 16/12/2025 20:37

Knitting.
Sewing.
Writing a journal or blog.
Writing articles for a local magazine or newspaper (essays, reviews, poetry - whatever appeals).

If you didn't mind going out of the house instead of staying on the sofa, you could try joining a choir or, if you don't like singing, another group that might interest you.

SoUncertain · 16/12/2025 21:01

I do creative journalling. It's a bit like scrapbooking. I decorate weekly pages in my journal with stickers, washi tape, sometimes scrapbook paper, then write in it. You can do it for a planner too. :)

TheAlcott · 16/12/2025 21:07

Crochet. I make huge blankets that are basically one big granny square. Dead easy, very satisfying and super cosy when lounging on the sofa of an evening.

I used to love a big jigsaw but we no longer have the space to have one out continuously. I miss doing them with my mum.

Icecreamisthebest · 16/12/2025 21:08

Yoga - lots of free classes on youtube

Reading, I belong to a book club so that is one night out a month. We talk about the book we have all read plus what other books people are reading which gives me new ideas.

I am a volunteer board member for a charity and our big focus right now is documenting our processes and procedures.

EmbroideredGardener · 16/12/2025 21:22

Doodling and journaling is good I find, but I will occasionally do other crafty stuff like repurposing old clothes, embroidery, woodwork (not for the arm chair mind!), wordle, dots, sudoku, strands, connections and alphaguess, and word searches. When I remember it, blossom, another word game!

TheDogsMother · 16/12/2025 21:47

I started a serious jigsaw habit during lock downs. DH made me a board where I can slide the whole thing under the sofa to store it and now I do them most evenings during the winter months.

FairViewRosie25 · 16/12/2025 21:51

Crochet. Make blankets keeps you warm while making.

Seriously79 · 16/12/2025 23:18

Colouring in book!

You have a canvas with a sticky surface made up of grid squares with symbols. Each symbol relates to a different coloured small crystal (called drills). You have a special “pen” to pick up each crystal and place it in the corresponding squares. Have attached a photo of part of a canvas with the grids and symbol key, plus a close up of one small part of a completed picture to show what the drills look like.

For someone like me, who doesn’t have a crafting bone in my body, it’s a great thing to do to feel creative.

I’m also an adult colourist! I like the intricate, detailed types of books like Kerby Rosanes, Johanna Basford, Hannah Karlzon etc, and also various gothic / horror / fantasy ones and architectural type ones, and also have a few themed around books / characters like ACOTAR, Moomins etc. I have about a billion sets of fancy colouring pencils now. Sometimes I colour in front of the TV but usually while I listen to podcasts or audiobooks.

I also do junk journalling and collage, and I read loads too. Occasionally I’ll do a jigsaw but the space they take up can be irksome.

Cross stitch! I must admit I always have the TV in the background for company. Best hobby ever.

What do you do with it all when you are finished?

My walls are covered in paintings now, some of which I give away to friends.

I crochet, do jigsaws, sudoku and adult colouring books. I play a string instrument too so do an hour of practice every day.

Everything I do has a meditative effect, getting lost in counting stitches or notes. It’s very therapeutic.

Zuve · 17/12/2025 07:50

I keep a diary with my fountain pen

Hi, would love your recommendations for two player games that I can play with DH!
