Hobbies for the evening from home

I am looking to take up something in the new year that I can from the comfort of my sofa that will replace staring at a screen.
I already read, listen to music and go to the gym.
Anyone want to share their off screen hobby?

Cross stitch :) I love it.

Onefortheroad25 · 16/12/2025 15:50

I colour and do jigsaws.

FestiveBauble · 16/12/2025 15:51

I love embroidery! Or needle felting, colouring (with my fancy alcoholic markers).

wtdse · 16/12/2025 15:51

I knit often and my husband likes grown up Mechano/technics

Hi!
My latest hobby has become painting; I paint by numbers.
It's a great activity, it distracts from all kinds of thoughts and doesn’t require any artistic skills. Try it)

What do you do with it all when you are finished?

Painting by number! Very satisfying

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 16/12/2025 15:54

I do embroidery.

DH does model kits, sewing - making items as well as decorating existing - origami - knitting/macrame/painting - I thhink he thinking about starting quilting - he watches a lot of crafters on you tube and tries some of it.

MaggieFS · 16/12/2025 15:56

Jigsaw!

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 16/12/2025 15:56

DD2 does paint by numbers we tend to frame them and put them on walls.

You could try fabric painting - textile art stuff - stuff that then has a use? DD1 likes the rug making kits you can get.

I did a jigsaw last week. First time I’ve done one in years, bought it on a whim. I’ve really enjoyed doing it and will be getting myself another soon!

vanillalattes · 16/12/2025 16:09

Adult colouring books.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 16/12/2025 16:09

Scrapbooking.
In my case I am collating and documenting our travels. Lots of people focus on their children, or past generations.

Time for my usual plug for Brickborrow

Lego subscription service. Pick a set, they send it to you, you build it, disassemble it, send it back, you pick a new one and the cycle begins all over a again.

-I crochet very basic rugs and donate the hospice. Most of the yarn I get from charity shops
-I'd like to make framed pictures with seaglass because we are coastal
-Previously I made terrariums, mainly to give away to friends/family. Again, I often bought the glass container/vase from a charity shop, bought the pebbles from B&Q, succulent plants from markets or garden centres and they can often be broken up into smaller plants
-Online surveys- but I guess its another form of screen time
-In the past my mum did patchwork quilting, tiffany lamps, latchwork rugs/wall hangings, macramé and bisque dolls but she did attend classes to get the basics.

I realise that most of the above aren't really things you could do sitting on the sofa though 😬

Isthisforevernow · 16/12/2025 16:25

Crochet, colouring, junk journaling, cross stitch, reading, jigsaws.

Other family members enjoy knitting, embroidery, baking. I enjoy eating the baked goods (is that a hobby?!)

SwallowsandAmazonians · 16/12/2025 16:29

I paint in oils and my partner paints miniatures.
But if I didn't have a hobby I'd probably see if there was something I could do that's both enjoyable and socially useful. Not sure what!

MuddlingThroughLife · 16/12/2025 16:31

Diamond art 💎 🎨

WilfredsPies · 16/12/2025 16:47

I do loads that can be done from the sofa. Hand sewing (dolls clothes and patchwork quilts), colouring, miniature painting, cross stitch, knitting, pyrography (you do have to be very careful with this, as the burn mark on the sofa will confirm), vinyl work, needle felting, paper cutting, quilling, card making, bauble making, book nooks and other model kits. Genealogy. There is so much to choose from. I have a wooden lap top table and I’m just about to take up mosaic tiling on wooden trays.

Ummmmm wow! I'm on this! Love love love Lego....Didn't even know this was a thing 😂 We literally have no room anymore and most of our sets are in the loft so my husbands dream of building in if the cars may get to come true 🙃 😅 🙂

Bunnykins34 · 16/12/2025 16:54

I do Diamond Art, I can lose hours doing this and I find it relaxing, well until the cat comes along and then ends up with the Drills stuck to her 🤪

SheilaFentiman · 16/12/2025 16:56
