Just horrendous. There was a big Jewish gathering on the beach. Jewish festival goers targeted by two gunmen. At least ten people dead according to police.

I’m embarrassed to admit that I know very little about why these men chose to attack a Jewish gathering, why is there such hatred towards them? I’ve tried to understand the war in Israel but I can’t work out who is in the wrong. I’ve obviously seen the Palestine marches but again, are these against or for the Jewish people? I’m sure a lot of you will roll your eyes, I’ve tried to read up about it but I can’t get a concise explanation on what it is all about . Jews seem to have been persecuted for years, why are Islamist terrorists against them now? Sorry to have to ask. If someone can explain it in a nutshell I’d be grateful. Whatever the reasoning’s today’s events are appalling and my heart goes out to everyone involved.

It really can't be explained "in a nutshell". That would reduce a very complicated geo-political situation to something meaningless.
The best thing to do is to read up on it, with respected authors.

Watching Sky News and Itai Galmudy is being interviewed outside Australia House where a vigil is being held.

Strong words from him which I agree with completely.

It's 2025 and we still have religion: a stone age fairytale used by cults to control people through hate and division. I'm beyond fed up with all the conflicts and atrocities that come with religion.

Why indeed, and yet in the UK, parliamentary representatives were elected by their Muslim majority constituents (who seem to mostly hail from Pakistan) by taking a stance on Gaza. Perhaps it started when Yarrafat escaped Lebanon by calling for help from the ummah, perhaps it leads back to the pan Arab movement of the early 20th C in the birthplace of the faith.

Anyone who knows the community, knows many with that stance.

Let me repeat myself, it seems you haven't understood.
Westerners expelled Jews out of Europe and killed 6 millions of them.
It would appear that it is yourselves that have always had an issue.

I note that you were selective in your response to my post.

Can I assume that you agree that Arabs are not afforded the same rights, in Israel, as Jews?

This point is very confusing as Jews aren’t even allowed to live in the majority of Arab countries so I don’t understand what this means. There are many, many people living in Israel who are not Jewish. Including political leaders. There are certainly no Jewish political leaders in Saudi Arabia or Egypt or Jordan or or or…

but anyway - none of this is the point. People keep conflating Israel and Jewish as if all Muslims are responsible for the horrors in Afghanistan or all Christian’s are responsible for Trump or Boris etc etc. There’s no reason Israel or Palestine should even be discussed every single time someone attacks Jews somewhere else in the world.

I used to live in Bondi. The nicest, friendliest, happiest place and the same goes for the people who live there. I’m so sad that this has happened. Bondi was truly a safe and welcoming community for everyone. Shocking, just shocking.

I was at Bondi 2weeks ago and am stunned that this atrocity has happened there . The most unlikeliest place you could imagine. Desperately sad for everyone involved and for Australia .

What's on paper, and what's in reality is very different. In East Germany the consitution guranteed many rights to citizens, which didn't happen in reality. Same in Israel for Arabs.

OK, please outline the rights Jews have in Arab countries then. I assume it's a beacon of parity, fairness and freedom to practise their Jewish faith and live as they wish, right?

The depth and breadth of Jew hatred is just astounding. I have Jewish family in Sydney. It’s sickening.

This is why Jews need Israel. And why the real and metaphorical “suitcase in the hall” goes on, through the generations. Even in a supposedly safe country like Australia.

What’s the suitcase in the hall? I’ve never heard of that, but it doesn’t sound good. 😢

That.

When I lived in Melbourne we often had Shabbat dinner with members of extended family and the wider community, many of whom had been in concentration camps. I recall the father of a friend who was on the kinder transports and then came to Oz telling us that the last memory of his mother was her tucking a sandwich into his pocket and telling him to always have a sandwich with him in case he had to flee again.

We asked him 'do you have a sandwich now?' and he reached into the inner pocket of his jacket and pulled out a sandwich.

One thing you can’t accuse President Trump of is antisemitism but I imagine people will try.

The west has a long, bloody and shameful history of antisemitism.
What I don’t understand is why you are talking as if Muslim countries don’t.

I'm an atheist but it can't all be blamed on religion. Humans are the most violent species on the planet and have been for thousands and thousands of years. We don't just become violent and wage wars over religion. Any excuse will do.

Devastatingly sad. Jews have spoken out for a while now about how they aren’t feeling safe. Attack in Manchester, now Australia. I don’t see it ending there either

PurpleThistle7 · 14/12/2025 17:47

My mother always said we should have more than one passport just in case. And we all do. Most Jewish people I know have a vague escape plan - usually a very illogical one based on some story in their family.

Whataboutery alert.
There are small Jewish communities in North African Muslim countries, Eg Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, but I don't think that's the point of your question.
I'd love for Jews and Muslims to be able to live in peace across the Middle East, and Christians too. I don't see the issue with stating the truth that Arabs don't have the same rights in reality as Jews do, as it happens to be true.

DelphineDonkeys · 14/12/2025 17:57

I remember doing the Arab/Isreali conflict as a GCSE history topic 17 years ago. It's so depressing to think about the violence and suffering just continuing on and on and now a terrorist attack in Australia today.

Just out of interest, how do you feel about the lack of religious freedom in Saudi Arabia?

Well done for trying to get a grip on it. Have a look at some Alevel textbooks- they explain the broad outlines from a non-biased point of view at a level that an intelligent beginner can grasp.

So the theft of even more land in the west bank, and the killing of the Palestinans in the west bank is what exactly?
Its government sanctioned terrorism against the native population.

But I guess, you call that a different name?

Too many people on this thread who are almost trying to justify the murders in Australia, they should be ashamed of themselves.
When I was very young, 1950s/early 1960s there were lots of WW2 films on TV and Dad watched them all, which mant we saw a lot too. I recall one naval film where a German battleship had been torpedoed and 'our' ships were picking up survivors, I said to Dad they should leave all the 'baddies' to drown and he went ape at me, they were someone's son, father, huband wtc and deserved not to die.
