2026 will be the year I sort my life out. Anyone else?

I’m 26. I’m in debt, health wise I’m not doing too great and mentally I could probably be a little better too. So 2026 will be the year I sort it all.

I’m re-evaluating my budget and I’m going to cut all my spending down. I’ll be debt free by the end of the year. I’m going to clear out everything I own and sell it on vinted or at car boot sales. I’m going to change my view on money.

I’ve got a GP appointment in a couple of weeks to sort out my health, I’m hoping they take me seriously and help me start sorting that.

I want to pick up a hobby or too that gets me out of the house and maybe even go on a date or two. I’m going to do some travelling and see things I’ve always wanted to see.

By the end of 2026 I want to be in a position where I can start to save for a house.

Anyone else going to sort their lives out next year?

Yes! Me. I'll join you, OP.

365 days from now we will be so grateful for all the amazing changes we've made

2026 has 52 weeks. 26 is half of 52. So that's 2 weeks to make a brilliant change 26 times, or 26 Excellent Things to do that will each take about 2 weeks that Future Me will be so thankful I did.

I love that way of looking at it! One commitment I’m making to myself is that I’ll stop letting myself gaslight myself over my health issues. I deserve help, no matter how I feel about myself.

Yep, I think I need to join too. Menopause, relationship ended, family problems, few friends, difficult job, little motivation, bored and getting steadily unfitter. I’ve had a very difficult five years and lost myself completely.

It’s time to ‘re-claim’ my life and head in a completely new direction.

I’ve booked an initial appointment to see a counsellor at the beginning of January for a start.

This is exactly how I feel, I’m sorry you’re feeling the same ❤️‍🩹 since the pandemic I feel like I’ve really stagnated and never really got my spark back after a bereavement in early 2022. But it’s time to reclaim our lives!

Let's do this! I'm not even going to wait until 1st January to start. I'm going to squeeze in one extra Excellent Thing I can do between now and the end of this year so that I can see out 2025 feeling glad rather than regretful.

I'm going to make a tea tray this afternoon, set my alarm for 45 minutes and come up with 26 things plus extra my Excellent Thing.

I love this! For the rest of the year I’m going to commit to eating healthy. Building the foundations for next year

Great idea! This year has been awful and I am so looking forward to seeing the end of it. Having a plan for next year would be great.

SparklyGlitterballs · 13/12/2025 13:00

I'll join you all. I've had a crap few years. First DH became ill and died last year from a recurrence of his cancer. This year I've had loads go wrong with the house (electrics/boiler etc) and I've had to navigate my way round organising repairs which have cost thousands and gone on for months. Recently I've had a knee replacement, so I'm not very mobile just now.

I'm hoping in the new year, once I've recovered, I'll be able to walk and exercise more so that I can get my weight down.

I also want to see the GP about my weak bladder issue, as that's something else that keeps me tied to the house.

I'm going to try and kick my senseless habit of buying things on Amazon - non-essential crap. I also want to continue with my programme of decluttering (DH was a bit of a hoarder). I've already tackled the wardrobes and garage but the loft is full to bursting and I desperately want to sort that.

I gave up work to be DH's carer. I'd like to find a part-time WFH job to bring in a little income.

So, overall, I want to slim down, get fitter, get out more and have a tidier house. Who knows, even a small holiday would be nice (haven't been away since 2019).

It feels good writing all that down. I hope I can commit to it.

muddledmidget · 13/12/2025 13:05

I am loving the idea of 27 Excellent things if I start today. 2 weeks is long enough to make a real difference or to complete a task without it becoming tedious or me getting complacent. My first Excellent thing is to clear a backlog of claiming at work. Once that's done I'll be in a better position to keep on top of it in the New Year and won't get overwhelmed.
Thank you for the new way of looking at things!!

@RidingMyBike@SparklyGlitterballssorry you’ve had such tough times and @SparklyGlitterballs im so sorry for your loss 💔

Ooooh, will you share your list…

Oldandgreyer · 13/12/2025 13:44

I've aimed to do 2 minutes of positive stuff each day.

Just 2 minutes. That means 2 minutes of thoughtful actions which will benefit future-me.

ChChChChanges2026 · 13/12/2025 13:58

Me please. Need you all to kick me up the arse and keep me honest.
It has been a bloody awful year.
I need to:

  1. Find a new job/less toxic one, with flexible working arrangements
  2. Sort out my house, one room at a time (declutter, deep clean, decorate)
  3. Get my eldest through their GCSEs
  4. Stick to boundaries with coparent
  5. Save up for essential repairs
  6. Try and do some self-care

See you on the other side!
Hugs and Shamrock to us all Xxx

WinterFrogs · 13/12/2025 15:12

I like these threads! I have found the changes I make that stick best are the 'Just One Thing' things that Michael Moseley (rip 😔) recommended.
One thing I would like to stick with is daily journalling. I go in fits and starts with that.

The other thing I really want to get to grips with is my garden.
Wishing you all the best for your health @sleepyjessie 💐

Berrie1 · 13/12/2025 17:42

I’d like to join too please.

I love a list! Here are some of the things I have so far

  1. Pay off debt and manage money better
  2. Complete a course I’m part way through
  3. Live more minimally
  4. Work on side projects
  5. Lose weight
  6. Have a makeover

I have smaller things too I’d like to do - make a dent in my TBR pile, be more organised, learn some new skills etc.

Like others, I am going to make a start now on some things.

ChristmasinBrighton · 13/12/2025 18:01

I tackled my weight this year, starting in January, and lost over five stone. I’m now BMI 20 and feel fantastic.

Next year I plan to sort out my hair. There’s so much of it and it’s wild and overwhelming really. I might even go brunette.

I need to drink more water and improve my skincare.

I love my job and have great work life balance but could definitely improve on excessive spending!

bitterexwife · 13/12/2025 18:07

I wish I could pin this thread to the top of my Mumsnet posts! Thank you @sleepyjessie

Whilst reading thread, my list begins with:

  1. eating healthy for rest of year
  2. continuing abstinence from alcohol (I’m 3 months sober and an alcoholic)

  4. use my Phillips IPL, every fortnight
  5. pay dad back £1k in august
  6. pay off £3,700 cc debt and cancel card

edited to add…. I’ve pinned it!!!!

I'll have to have a think and report back 🤔

Whereisthesun99 · 14/12/2025 12:55

I will join too pls, so far my plans for 26 are

  1. eat more fruit
  2. stick to excessive plan of 30 mins a day
  3. continue taking my collagen and vitamins
  4. grow my savings divided between pension and savings for holidays, new car etc
  5. spend less time doom scrolling
  6. learn and actually remember the Japanese I need for judging and refereeing competitions
Sartre · 14/12/2025 13:05

I’m not putting this pressure on myself, it doesn’t work. Tried it a few times in the past but I’ve always been more successful when I just start at a random point than at new year. When I lost lots of weight in the past, I just started on a random Wednesday in the middle of the year. I was sick of feeling like I did and something snapped within me. I’d tried and failed to lose it as a New Year’s resolution about 3 times.

Ditto other areas in my life. I could have waited till new year to massively decrease my drinking habit for example but I thought no, I’ve had enough now and so stopped a month ago.

LadyLucksalot · 14/12/2025 14:00

We are a merry band already! I stopped doing New Year's Resolutions and started New Year Solutions instead a little while ago. Resolutions are so dreary and joyless whereas solutions feel more practical and empowering.

So, if I want to feel stronger and flexible, my solution a couple of years ago was daily yoga, which I've continued.

My extra 27th thing before 2026 is to manage a continuous 20 minute run. The speed and distance doesn't matter but if I can do this for a solid non-stop 20 minutes, I'm off to a running start for the new year!

BlueberryOats · 14/12/2025 14:14

I'll join you, I've had a lot of therapy this year, so am in a good place, but have been floored with the flu. Motivation is lacking but am keen to hit the New Year with a healthy eating habit. I already reached my had enough point, was kind of waiting until after Christmas, but may as well get started.

Healthy eating - would like to lose about 4lbs a month
More progress at work - just more focus as my motivation goes up and down
Hobbies - there's a group I'd like to try going to in the New Year, less scrolling
Exercise routine - get back into the gym and doing some cardio regularly, get back into yoga
Sleep - more consistent
Pay off car loan - making progress, stop frittering
Build up savings - same
Finish the decluttering - lots of crap in the front room that needs to go, ongoing digital declutter
General self care - hair and skin care and clothes
Routine - just sticking to it
Reduce credit card

Will start the groundwork and report back.

aibutohavethisusername · 14/12/2025 14:36

I’d love to join, will think of a list.

Formerdarkhorse · 14/12/2025 14:54

Love this- especially ‘new year solutions’ @LadyLucksalot ! I already made a lot of changes over the last couple of years so not back at square one entirely but have been in a rutthe last couple of months (justifiably had a lot going on). Made a plan for the next two weeks as a soft launch into the new year.

I’ll be back with a full list, but I want to sort out my weight/health and finances and build solid routines.

The book Atomic Habits was useful before for habit stacking
