Don Snoreleone trying to stay awake long enough to bring all his racist dreams to fruition. So when can we bring about his personal "civilisational erasure”?

WTAF is wrong with Starmer? Reform deserve to get in if that’s all the leadership he can give to the country.

Well Reform would only whinge if Starmer condemned the actions anyway.

I'd be much more curious to know what is going on behind the scenes.

One way to put a rocket up Starmers arse would be to table a question in parliament asking for assurances that there was no British intelligence used in this action. Bearing in mind we were told a while ago that the UK has stopped sharing intelligence around Venezuela ....

walllaw · 04/01/2026 11:14

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 04/01/2026 10:57

I think WTAF is wrong with Starmer is that he thinks his job is trying to be a diplomatic bridge between Europe and Trumpleville. Whereas we all know the time has long passed come for dumping Trump in the sea.

Yeah, can you imagine the outcry if he called it out and we ended up with a shitload of new tariffs? Now that we don't even have the security of being part of a bloc with Europe, he really has to watch his footsteps.

Adding - as frustrating as it is personally to see him have to kowtow to that psychotic moron.

He does look like a rabbit in the headlights at the moment.
What do I do, what do I do now? Heeeeellllp! 😬

LlttledrummergirI · 04/01/2026 11:22

I thought he looked furious yesterday when responding, but trying to be diplomatic.

I will be deeply disappointed if the UK doesn't issue a statement condemning this, but feel that it needs to come from parliament as a whole. I hope they allow an urgent question tomorrow so we know where all our MPs stand.

Truthfully, I think he is a rabbit in the headlights. Unfortunately.

DuncinToffee · 04/01/2026 10:59

What else do you think he could have said?

The UK's statement is aligned with other European countries, it doesn't back Trump's attacks, it rebukes it through its reference to international law.

It's safe

I know people (me included)would like Starmer to tell Trump to fuck off but that just is not realistic. The UK isn't in a position to do so.

At the risk of revealing why I never aimed at a career as a diplomat, I think the time for diplomacy is long gone, and there’s no point even trying for it with Trump, he does not care and it makes not a blind bit of difference being polite to him and not condemning him, he’ll just do what the hell he wants either way, depending on his mood of the day.
And this, at the risk of revealing why I didn’t consider politics as a career (and/or my own stupidity), I don’t understand why the UK (or any other European country, for that matter) is not in a position to tell him to FO, for all the effect it will have either way, at this point? He’s already doing his worst, what worse can he do? He needs to be stopped, somehow, and I would suggest a strong coalition of global leaders working together to counteract his behaviour would be better than the current kowtowing, though I have no idea what they could actually do which is of practical use, short of taking him and Vance out, in the same way he has behaved in Venezuela.
Sorry, I know I’m being naive. I’m just furious that nobody took any notice of me back in 2016 when I warned people that Trump being elected President would be a Bad Thing for the whole world, not just for normal US citizens.

I don't disagree in principle, but I suspect he's frozen in terror at what Trump could do to his already struggling economy. I actually think where he's really gone wrong is in being so cowardly in standing up and telling the country the truth about Brexit. Our best hope, politically, diplomatically and economically, is finding some way back in. They should have said that in the election campaign and I suspect would have got in on the back of it. But, like you, I was never going to be a diplomat 😂

SerendipityJane · 04/01/2026 11:33

What would you have the hypothetical ideal PM to do and say?

Eyesopenwideawake · 04/01/2026 11:47

Align more with Europe.
International law has been violated.
Make European links stronger.
Stand up to him.
I know, I know he's in a tough place. But he's too much of a diplomat and not enough courage of his convictions. IMHO.

SerendipityJane · 04/01/2026 11:54

A leader can only "stand up" to another country if they have their own countries backing (E2A: have any protests been planned yet ?) . This isn't the case in the UK where the leader of the opposition had to change her clothes after having a little too much excitement at hearing the news, and the media have a Nigel Farage day every week.

Now if the UK were to be bombed (cf. the IRA campaign) then it's a different story. Although if that were to happen today, I can see Kemi and Farage saying it's all Britains fault for not giving in.

Eyesopenwideawake · 04/01/2026 11:47

This. Would be the same with Badenoch or Blair or Cameron. The old rules of diplomacy are gone for the moment but we still have to deal with the US. Is there a special relationship anymore? There may be after Trump dies/steps down.

walllaw · 04/01/2026 11:58

Eyesopenwideawake · 04/01/2026 11:47

What would you have the hypothetical ideal PM to do and say?

Probably what he is doing, which is a horrible position for him (and us) to be in. That's my point. I said in my post what I think he should do/have done differently, that he's trapped himself in part by not being willing to speak out honestly about Brexit, either during the election or now. I would have liked to see him get into office with a mandate to start finding a way to getting us back into Europe, but that horse has obviously bolted.

LlttledrummergirI · 04/01/2026 12:05

The tories are almost as awful in opposition as they were in government. Just taking the opposite view to the government with no nuance or thougt, just because.
Farage is actively working against Britain in my opinion.

They need to debate this attack on Venezuela in parliament (preferably tomorrow) to form consensus on how we respond as a country.

Has Mark Carney the Canadian PM said anything?

It's increasingly assumed that this is Dons Monroe doctrine and that doing this in Venezuela now might free up US Naval forces for going up the Atlantic coast to Greenland

Serpentstooth · 04/01/2026 13:44

Anyone looking forward to visiting the Trump Peace World Cup? Here we are, isolated by Brexit, NATO useless without US goodwill, Starmer is in no position to start lecturing Pigly on diplomatic niceties. Europe has been betrayed by USA and everyone's crossing their fingers it won't start collecting what it sees as its dues from us. If USA doesn't act against its Reichskabinet internally to curb it then.. . . then the world's changed and all bets are off.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/01/2026 14:16

I would definitely prefer not to visit the USA under its present regime.

"Nothing to hide nothing to fear" is meaningless, because the low-pay-grade enforcers seem to be pretty-much entirely random about whom they choose to incarcerate and deny legal representation for days and weeks at a time. Even US citizens seem not to be safe, so what hope has a national of any other country in the world?

(I have Jewish ancestry. I will not place bets about how long it will be before Jews become a target along with Latinos and Blacks.)

I wrote to my MP a while back for assurances on this. Still waiting for an actual reply beyond the 'we got your email and will reply shortly".

I wonder when the next batch of Epstein files will drop (in the hope that they’re buried)

walllaw · 04/01/2026 17:12

I think Ted Lieu got what the Dem messaging should be exactly spot on - except if he consulted me, I'd have suggested adding a line on the Epstein files (why did he not consult me? 😂)
