A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I was really not a fan of Kemi, I dislike her characterisation of ND people as wanting to portray themselves as victims etc. but her economic attacks have been absolutely nail on the head lately. The conservative clips on instagram is spot on too.

after I’d listened to Reeves’s awful budget speech clobbering my pension etc, and Kemi got up and made us laugh whilst wiping the floor with her my view changed.

added to that, I was not a fan of coming out of the ECHR, but the last 18 months I can’t see how we can have a working deterrent unless we can deport people without being continually blocked by courts.

lastly - she’s got Blair worried and his judgment on these things was usually correct, the anti private sector high tax stuff is cutting through.

NoWordForFluffy · 06/12/2025 14:54

BBC Breakfast asked Kemi about the Crewkerne Gazette AI rap video the other day. She said she thought it was funny (and it was nice to see something funny and complimentary rather than abusive)!

To those who responded to my post about the Poltics teacher’s view on Kemi, you’ve said what I said to him but I do wonder if we are an echo chamber and others outside of this, aren’t seeing what we are seeing.

Since she’s taken over, I’ve been considering joining the party. Something, I would never have done before.

Pacificsunshine · 06/12/2025 19:26

I joined after her conference speech. I wanted to show support.

First of all its great you have a teacher who is prepared to admit in a school that they are right learning politically. Thus, I imagine it must be a Grammar/Independent school where you work. This because, any praise for Kemi or right wing politics in a comprehensive is 'career' damaging or at least socially defining.

My sister is evidence to this who is a Head of Sixth form at a Lincolnshire Girls Grammar school and a Farmer, who is a member of Reform. This she keeps 'quiet' though a another teacher when in her car looked in her glove box and found a Reform Party Conference Lanyard. Hopefully, 'jokingly' informed sister that her 'carer' was now on the line as the Union and other teachers would look on as a Farage Fascist !. A number of Sixth Former's studying Politics have asked her opinions about the IHT issues within Farming as they know that her family farm has over 1750 acres and well known in the area for Meat, and Dairy produce.

Sister, professionally refuses to engage these questions by quickly changing the question to one involving the students concerned and their political views, being noncommittal herself. Sister does not want to leave teaching after 25 years, because she does not want to hide her legitimate views on this Governments 'horrific' destruction of farming. However, she is really struggling not to say something 'Political' against the left narrative that in the current educational environment could make her position untenable. This is also an area that is traditionally as 'Tory' as it comes, but likely to go strong Reform.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/12/2025 21:03

@Wishihadanalgorithm i've got the opposite problem

Most people I know are left-wing. I don't know a lot of people though 😂 I can detect disappointment with Labour but I try not to talk about politics and people are generally pretty respectful of that. So there may be a bunch of stuff I don't hear but I certainly get an anti-anyone on the right vibe.

Mum's friends, less so, I think there's probably a few Tory voters there. I hear comments secondhand though.

i've never been a member of a political party. I don't really have enough faith in anybody to even repost something they say, much less actually pay to be a member of a party. Kemi has made me consider it, credit to her. The difficulty I have is the amount of damage that's been done under the Tories. Obviously, I get that it would've been much worse under Labour but I just can't really imagine putting that much faith in a party that I'd become a member.

I don't know if anyone else has this, but usually I spend the run-up to an election wondering what disaster is going to occur with the party I plan to vote for!

Wishihadanalgorithm · 06/12/2025 21:59

@redange I’m sorry your sister is kind of under attack because of the family farm. I am indeed at an indie and funnily enough I teach a student whose family have a farm. He rocked up on non uniform day wearing a fleece that had a pro-farming anti inheritance tax slogan. That prompted a discussion in class!

Teachers should be impartial in the classroom and kids often ask me how I voted - I always refuse to tell them.

@EmeraldRoulette I used to be typically left of centre and I struggled with who to vote for in recent years. It’s odd but since this bunch have taken office I have found myself firmly camped in the right.

With The people I know, it’s a real mix of left and right leaning. No one seems to be centrist anymore.

Thank You for you post on Sister.

I think what has happened is that, the Overton Window has moved far left. (despite what they would have you believe) Thus, so what was considered just 'centre' Politics with neither a politically left or right wing politics is considered to be 'far' right. It is one of the reasons for instance that Trade Unionist Paul Embery is now considered to be an outlier on the left of politics. Paul Emberry though possibly on the 'Left' Economically, is like many in the North East of England 'Socially' Conservative and Traditional. Hence, the obsession with culture politics, rather than substance and improving peoples lives has driven you away from your previous political feelings.

You are also not in favour of destroying long established UK traditions and industries such as Farming and the Independent education sector. This, especially as the destruction is not done to bring better outcomes for the Country or society. Destroying, generational, family farms will not bring better quality or more plentiful and affordable food to the public. Indeed, the destruction of the farming sector is likely to bring 'food' poverty to many.

These, destructive ideas are based on 'ideology' and in Bridget Phillipson, a serious 'mental' problem based around Swimming Pools and Astroturf pitches.

Some more good news.

Labour’s biggest union backer is considering a historic vote on splitting from the party in a blow to Sir Keir Starmer’s premiership.

Senior officials at Unite are in talks about whether to call an emergency conference to vote on formal disaffiliation from the Labour Party.
Sources say there is “intense frustration” with Sir Keir, from the top of the union down to the grass roots membership.

Some Labour MPs believe Unite’s support can only be won back with a change of party leader, with one saying: “They would coalesce around one candidate on the Left of the party.”

It would mark the biggest rupture between the party and the trade union movement in recent history. One MP said it would make it “very difficult” for Sir Keir to remain as leader, saying it was a “seriously bad moment”.

“This is a major union, it is a major player within the wider Labour movement,” the MP said. “It is a critically important relationship – but it has become dysfunctional.”

Basically they want Angela Rayner. That’s not a great result.

TheNuthatch · 07/12/2025 09:55

Good morning 😁

Just watched Pat McFadden on Trevor Phillips. He's such a snake! He has unveiled plans to remove benefits from young people if they refuse to undertake work or training. Great, except this government are simultaneously pushing up unemployment with every decision they make. 🙄 Where are they supposed to find work in this climate?

Baroness Falkner was also interviewed. She was excellent. What an inspiring woman she is. Of course McFadden didn't have an answer to any of the points she made.

Christmas decs are going up today. I've decided to stick with the BH tree that I bought last year, mainly because I'm too stubborn to admit that I don't like it. 😂 We'll have to clean as we go as I still haven't had time to do the big clean.
Last roast dinner before Christmas here too, and need to give the dogs an extra long walk.

So they want a leftist PM with leftist policies, even though there is no mandate from the people. Can't wait.

Front page of The Sunday Times.

David Lammy has been accused by senior barristers of misrepresenting figures about rape cases collapsing in a “cynical” attempt to push through the abolition of half of all jury trials.

The justice secretary has repeatedly suggested that 60 per cent of victims are pulling out of cases because of delays in the court system. However, the true statistics show the vast majority of rapes reported are abandoned long before a charge is brought, due to factors such as policing delays. The number of victims withdrawing post-charge is 8 per cent.

I understand why Unite are annoyed, they can join the queue on that.

The manifesto break is related and even though it was a completely dud policy they would have backed at GE based on those day 1 lies.

Not sure it’s good, going further left would be a problem for everyone as the markets would react. How they’d deal with that idk

Exactly - the further and faster left they go, the better.

Throw in the inevitable torrid economic data in the New Year….

Didn't Unite fall out with Rayner last year? I thought they'd suspended her membership for not doing exactly as they demand?

Or have I mixed up my comrades?

It would be the end for them but they don’t have a Rishi Sunak to fix it, it’s hard to know what they’d do.

What's most worrying for me, is that they probably think they can defy the markets and teach them a lesson.

McFadden on the Sunday morning TV round! That display is exactly why I could not be a politician. It’s all so undignified.

Labour isn’t cancelling elections because it’s going to get trounced in them? How can he say this with a straight face?

Perhaps I approach matters too simplistically, but my conclusion is better a full-blown crisis which serves to provoke an early GE, as opposed to a continuation of this.

And for those who assert an early GE is an impossibility, I would argue that given the obvious divide within Labour, defeat on welfare reform, could prove one catalyst.
