Do you answer your door late at night?

Just had a knock on the door, not expecting anyone so didn’t answer. Would you open your door at this time of night? (Not asking about day time just considering it is 10 at night)

Yes, but would have my dog with me.

Dragonfly97 · 30/11/2025 22:22

I wouldn't if I was on my own, dog would bark so I hope it would be a deterrent. If DH was here ( he works away during the week) he'd answer. We have a security camera so could see if anyone came up the path.

ItsDarkNow · 30/11/2025 22:22

Yes. Have a chain on the door so would open enough to see who’s outside

justasking111 · 30/11/2025 22:23

Yes we would a few elderly neighbours in our cul de sac. We've had falls, strokes and other emergencies at bedtimes. We've had ambulances etc.

We do have a ring doorbell with camera now so can check.

dontmalbeconme · 30/11/2025 22:23

Yes, if I was up. Why wouldn't I?

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 30/11/2025 22:23

No I’m not expecting anyone We have electric gate and I have cameras and audio. I can see who at door.
Are you okay?Has something happened?

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 30/11/2025 22:24

Yes I answer my door at night.

TheTowerAtMidnight · 30/11/2025 22:24

Yes of course, 10pm isn't late. I regularly get supermarket deliveries between 9 and 10, so do the neighbours.

OdddSox · 30/11/2025 22:24

I did a few weeks ago but this was a once and only time. Several very loud knocks on the door with me asking who it was. I couldn't hear their replies too well as I have poor hearing. So I insisted they stand by the window so I could see them .
It was the police. They'd been driving down the street and seen a car outside my house with the passenger door wide open. No occupants, no one around, so assumed they were at my house. They weren't. They eventually found them after trying several houses .

TappyGilmore · 30/11/2025 22:25

No, especially as it is a completely solid door - no glass or anything to see through. But you can hear through it easily so sometimes I will shout and ask who it is / what they want. We’ve only ever had someone come that late once, and it was the next door neighbour’s son who had just arrived from overseas and got the wrong house!

JDM625 · 30/11/2025 22:26

We have cameras, one pointing onto the drive and one on the front door- so I'd check those firstly before answering the door.

BitOutOfPractice · 30/11/2025 22:27

I’d look through the peephole first then probably yes.

Who was it op?

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 30/11/2025 22:27

I always answer the door but I have a peephole and if I’m unsure then I open it with the chain on so only a few inches.

Spirallingdownwards · 30/11/2025 22:28

Yes

But this is MN and there are lots on here who don't open it in the day!

CaseClosedWineOpened · 30/11/2025 22:28

Indianajet · 30/11/2025 22:21

Yes, but would have my dog with me.

This one for me too. Feel a lot more confident opening the door while holding the collar of my excited German Shepherd… otherwise I would likely ignore it.

KuromiCat · 30/11/2025 22:28

A man, I don’t know him, didn’t answer.

therewasafishinthepercolator · 30/11/2025 22:28

Yes. We live on country road so I'd assume it's someone lost / broken down / had an accident / looking for a peacock.

If you didn't feel comfortable that's fine. Understandable. Did he leave quickly or keep knocking for a while? Do you live near other houses?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 30/11/2025 22:33

Nope. Definitely not.

Although as someone else on here said, I don't always answer in the daytime either.

TheChosenTwo · 30/11/2025 22:36

I don’t consider 10pm to be especially late, we are usually still downstairs then and our older dc are often in and out at that time and may occasionally forget their keys while walking to the car!
at 3am I’d check the cctv from my bed but curiosity would inevitably get the better of me so I’d go down and see what the fuss was about.

KuromiCat · 30/11/2025 22:39

It’s late to be knocking on strangers doors imo

OP posts:
KuromiCat · 30/11/2025 22:40

Yes plenty of houses around, he only knocked on mine stayed for maybe a minute or two

TeenLifeMum · 30/11/2025 22:40

I’d look through the peep hole and if I was alone I might call out “can I help you” if I didn’t recognise them. I find the idea of ignoring the door and pretending not to hear quite stressful. Why wouldn’t you want to find out why they’re knocking? It’s unlikely to be a salesperson… although we did once have a random guy trying to get me to buy fish from his van at 9pm. It was very odd but apparently normal in that road. He only came to us the once because I told him we don’t eat fish.

OhDonuts · 30/11/2025 22:40

No because I wouldn’t want visitors that late at night.
I have a security camera so can check if it’s something important though.

Depends why he’s knocking. Might want to tell you your car lights are on and is trying to stop you waking to a flat battery.
