Do you answer your door late at night?

Just had a knock on the door, not expecting anyone so didn’t answer. Would you open your door at this time of night? (Not asking about day time just considering it is 10 at night)

I'd look at my video doorbell app. If it wasn't the police or someone I was expecting, nope.

But I am one of 'those' people who doesn't answer the door unless I am expecting someone anyway.

I’d have to. I’m nosy as fuck. I’d also be thinking the worst. I wouldn’t let any other family near the door and I’ve got an Akita and a bad attitude so I’m probably safe.

years ago when I lived close to a town centre someone drunk banged on my door at 3/4am. I did ignore that because I thought nothing good would come of it. I’ve spent the last twenty years wondering who it was.

I am often in bed plus I've had a stroke. I look out from my top window and talk to them from there.

Taytocrisps · 01/12/2025 22:00

I'm on my own a lot of the time, so no. I'd be nervous answering the door late at night. I might have a peek out the window though. I've had the odd take away delivery man calling to the wrong house (same house number, but different road in the estate).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/12/2025 22:03

I’d check who it is first. We have a little window thing at the side of the front door, so you can see who it is.

So if your door knocked at 3am you’d answer it? Or is there a cut off

I would, there is no cut off. I'd be cautious though

Same…it amazes me how many people on here say they just ignore any knock at the door. I completely understand taking sensible precautions, but there are simple safeguards we can employ.

It has absolutely nothing to do with safety for me. It's down to indifference.

There is no reason of any interest to me for anyone to be knocking on my door without arranging it beforehand, therefore I completely ignore my front door being knocked on.

madaboutpurple · 02/12/2025 01:29

I would leave the door locked up and shout Who is there and find out why they are knocking .

Augustus40 · 02/12/2025 07:18

Not after 8pm.

GooseyGandalf · 02/12/2025 07:20

Yes, and it’s always someone whose mistaken our house for the next door neighbours. Their house is like central station.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 02/12/2025 08:59

I'd at least go and look to see what it is. It could be something really pressing. Although this is just another sign of living in a low-trust society.

My doorbell went off at 5am recently, expecting someone in a crisis having been turned down elsewhere. Looked out the window, thick fog, nobody there. Checked back on the CCTV, just a swirl of mist near the doorbell.

We concluded ghosts.

Did have a look through the glass but definitely didn’t know the person

I can't imagine anybody being in a crisis having been turned down elsewhere would turn up on my doorstep in the middle of the night.

Still, everybody's different/

KuromiCat · 02/12/2025 11:13

Yeah in that case I’d imagine they’d shout through “help” or whatever but even then I’d be reluctant that it may be some kind of scam and they didn’t knock on any other doors as spoke to
my neighbours
