Do you answer your door late at night?

Just had a knock on the door, not expecting anyone so didn’t answer. Would you open your door at this time of night? (Not asking about day time just considering it is 10 at night)

How late is late? After 10 we consider late. Even in the summer the lights lighting the drive and the front door would have been triggered by their arrival. So we can see who it is. After midnight, we probably would not answer but again if it was a frantic neighbour, we would.

I’d probably say after 9 would be too late for me.

I’m a single parent so just me alone with the kids, my teenage son did go and have a look to see who it was from the bedroom window but said he was gone when he got there so didn’t hang around long. I will ask next door later if she heard anything she is elderly though so probably asleep by 10pm.

No. The last time I did she got arsey because I didn't let her in. I mean she didn't tell me who she was so why on earth would I do that? She then realised she had the wrong door. No apology for disturbing me

RaraRachael · 01/12/2025 11:38

I never answer the door after dark if I'm in the house alone. If OH is in, he'll go.

Sailininthechoppa · 01/12/2025 11:38

I pop my head out of the upstairs window. It is always a food delivery driver coming to our house by mistake.
I live somewhere crap and badly lit so have my wits about me.

JustAn0therUsername · 01/12/2025 11:39

Yes. We live rurally so it’s feasible it’s someone needing help (it’s happened). But I have a large dog and I can see who is there on the camera so it’s low risk. It’s usually my neighbour.

ApolloandDaphne · 01/12/2025 11:54

Yes. But I have window in both my doors so I would be able to see who it was. We often get deliveries fairly late at night.

Sarah2891 · 01/12/2025 11:58

Definitely not. Unless I looked on the Ring camera and saw it was someone I knew. Or the police!

NewCushions · 01/12/2025 11:59

At that time of night, DH would answer not me. If he's not here, I'd probably talk to them through the window to see why they're here first - we had some hilarious young lads (maybe 18 or 19) that we still don't know if they were dodgy or genuine, but they were very excited about the hedgehog they'd seen crossing our driveway. We DID, at the time, have a hedgehog who would hang around in our front garden or our neighbours' until the bloody dog kept getting excited and chasing it if we didn't grab her quick enough so it, understandably, moved on , so we knew that the probably HAD seen him. But we weren't sure if it was an exuse or real.

RosemaryandTruffle · 01/12/2025 12:00

No but then I don't answer it during the day either if they look like canvassers.

IAmKerplunk · 01/12/2025 13:06

Think it depends where you live. Where I live now absolutely I would answer the door. A previous place - no way at all.

huuskymam · 01/12/2025 13:11

I'd answer it through the camera, but usually at that time one of the adult kids have ordered food.

RaraRachael · 01/12/2025 13:12

Where I live there's not much crime so don't have a Ring doorbell and there aren't food deliveries so our doorbell very rarely rings.

BeAmberMember · 01/12/2025 13:18

Nope. I don't the answer at all unless I'm expecting someone.

I live in flats though which makes a difference I think.

Certainly if I was remote and alone I would check before I opened. I wouldn't just ignore it though.

Same…it amazes me how many people on here say they just ignore any knock at the door. I completely understand taking sensible precautions, but there are simple safeguards we can employ.

notacooldad · 01/12/2025 20:24

Yes.
Our Amazon delivery is often late.
Ive had the police knocking on my door at 23:00hrs. My neighbour called around at 22:45hrs to pick up a parcel that was dropped at mine in the morning then I went to work until 22:30, she saw me come home.
I'll answer the door but I wouldnt expect anyone to knock unless its an absolute emergency if all the lights were off and it was obvious id gone to bed.

25percentoffeverything · 01/12/2025 20:26

Until midnight yes, it's just as dark at 4pm anyway

when I am in my pjs I would at least check by the windows - to at least make it very obvious the house is not empty!

So if your door knocked at 3am you’d answer it? Or is there a cut off

Od stick my head out tbe bedroom window to see who it was.

I have actually had knocks on the door arou d that time on more than one occasion. It was always ds2 who had gone out left his car at his mates house and then gone on drinking but left his house keys in the car!
He was a little drunk and apologetic!
In many ways im glad he's got his own house now!

canuckup · 01/12/2025 21:00

Absolutely not

scorpiogirly · 01/12/2025 21:01

I never answer the door unless I am expecting someone of a delivery. I am tempted to put a sign on the door, "Unless you have an appointment or a parcel, go away".

winterbluess · 01/12/2025 21:03

I'd peep hole it first then decide 🤣

BlossomingSlowly · 01/12/2025 21:04

I would but that’s because I often do things without thinking 😂 the dog would go nuts and even though he’s small he’s firey when needed and would no doubt have a decent go at savaging a burglar 😂 I’d probably assume it was someone needing help / a neighbour / an Amazon delivery I’d forgotten about. Don’t think I’ve ever knocked on someone’s door so late before. Perhaps once at about 9pm when I noticed on my late night dog walk that someone had left their car door open; they looked surprised but were grateful

mumofsevenfluffs · 01/12/2025 21:07

the main reason I got a Ring doorbell to see who was at the door all times of the day. I’m disabled and wfh upstairs so to answer the door I need to know that it’s not a time waster.

blankcanvas3 · 01/12/2025 21:07

I’d check on the ring doorbell before doing so. I wouldn’t just straight up answer the door, especially if i’m alone
